This is one of the Upapuranas or "Minor" puranas and its belongs to the saura category. The saura groups of puranas including Bhavishya Purana, Samba Purana and Saura Purana worshiping the Sun. Among those Samba seems to be more ancient because Bhavishya is borrowing many chapters from Samba and Saura was change from saura sastra into 'saiva mood. Thats why the Samba seems to be the only orginal source of saura worship. Here the Sun God, Surya is the Supreme Being. Samba , the son of Krsna was suffering white leprosy caused by course. His glorious father advice him to worship the Sun God. And this is the root of interesting topics about the astronomy including movement of the Sun and the Moon, description of the Surya's charriot, Gayatri and Bhija mantras, worshiping of the Deity and so on.
This sanskrit - english edition has very interesting preface about the Samba Purana in traditions, including all manuscripts and saura sources. Acording to this description , this version seems to be checked and well edited.
For scholars this is a must. For simple religion resources - check Bhagavata Purana, Visnu Purana, Garuda Purana and Bhagavad Gita - the sastras for everyone . And if You looking for more Saiva oriented saurces - get Vayu Purana, Matsya Purana or Vamana Purana with not-sectarian approach to Siva pastimes.
