Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Preschooler Sammy, the youngest of four, is dismayed when his older brother and sisters announce a class trip to the airport. As in Under Sammy's Bed (Andre Deutsch, 1989), his vivid fantasies--this time of flying--are ignored and ridiculed. But while his siblings are off on their excursion, the young boy's parents and grandmother take him to a small fair where his dreams come true with a ride in a hot-air balloon. In the homey conclusion, his siblings bring their brother souvenirs, and he shares photos of his adventure and a cake from Gran with them. While the story has some Briticisms, meanings are understandable in context. The biracial family's interactions are realistic and loving. The weakest point of the book is the illustrations. Welch's watercolor-and-pen drawings, while bright, are often cluttered and she has some difficulty in drawing faces--her characters at times appear grotesque. --Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI
