I went to a book signing and my 3 year-old and 5 year-old loved the story and the author. (they did not feel like they were being spoken to do or propagandized) No; it is not for older kids, it is not meant to be a children's book for the precocious. And sure, it is a little light on story... but small children love it (by the response at the signing we attended). I must admit that I never thought much of children's books; the idea, for me, was to get kids interested in reading and teach them new words and ideas. That being the case, this little book succeeds on both counts.
It also makes no excuses for its "agenda"; from what I have gathered, the entire ethos of this forthcoming series is supposed to be about teaching very young children about these very important issues (recycling, climate change, pollution, endangered animals etc.). We are looking forward to more books...and our family highly recommends it!
I love the idea that a mom and her daughter have created this together. My 7 year old is always talking about recycling and conserving water so she really enjoyed recognizing the lessons taught in the book as the very same they were discussing in class.
