I found this to be a great book. It clearly and quickly covers all of the important aspects of the C++ language. You can actually read through this book and learn the language. I am a professional programmer and suggest that all new programmers I work with learn from this book. All of the core language syntax and constructs are covered in a small number of pages so there is a higher probability that a new programmer will actually read about all the language has to offer. This book is essentially a basic guide to the syntax of the language. It does not cover any of the standard libraries (I think that material would make the book less clear) so you should consider buying "The C++ Standard Library" by Josuttis as a reference to complement this book.

Because learning programming is such a dry topic, it's really important that the author doesn't write in the same manner. I picked this book up having had no programing experience before and unfortunately this book didn't enlighten me as much as I had hoped it would. My displeasure isn't with the material in the book (which is very thorough considering its small size) but rather with its presentation. It was hard to stay focused on learning syntax when sifting through a barrage of technical terms and explanations. Also, the lessons do not build on one another as well as some other sources I've read since then. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone migrating from another language or anyone needing a refresher course. However, this book is not ideal for someone with no programming experience in the past. For that I would recommend the tutorials at [...]

18 years after it's intial publication, it is time this book had an upgrade and some similar books like it.

There never was a "Teach Yourself Python in 10 Minutes". (There should have been.) And "Teach Yourself C++ in 10 Minutes" was the go to book for making a few simple but effective examples. Be it, yes, it does lack some thoroughness especially when it comes to the subject of C/C++'s Pointers and References. But this book dived head-first to get the job done.

And while it's bigger brother, "Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours" may be more in-depth and gone through several publications and iterations for other languages, Jessie Liberty has my respect for doing the best he can to explain the subject in as brief a description as possible.

I just wish there were more books like this.

I knew this book would not fully teach me C++ or that it would be done in 10 minutes. But, I did think that I would be getting a good intro into C++. THIS BOOK STINKS! I feel pretty stupid because I bought this thinking that it was a cheap book that had to cover at least the basics. Now I am forking out more money on a different book so I can actually learn something. I trashed this sorry book after getting to Lesson 8. I bought the book because I am ignorant in the ways of C++ but I thought something was odd when every lesson started with the #include ... state of the art baby! I don't mean some of the lessons... all of the lessons. Look, do yourself a favor. Buy something else... anything else. This book can only start you down the Dark path. And once you start down the Dark path... forever will it dominate your life. Use a search engine and do a lookup on the book. People far better at explaining why this book [stinks] are EVERYWHERE.

I have bought several C++ books. But this little book is actually the one that I WANT to keep reading, and that is what makes it effective ! This book is comprised of 26 chapters, and each of which is a 10-min lesson, and easy to read. So you can pull out this book and take a 10-min lesson where ever, and whenever you want. An excellent book for anyone like me who want to pick up some C++ in a hurry.

Let me just say, this book will be the only book needed for novice beginners; it teaches you only some basics and advanced parts of the language. Each lesson is 10 minutes long, and it does 100% it claims; teach you a lot of things from the history of C++, to input and output coding to object-oriented programming. Don't go for the for dummies books; this is the 1-stop choice for your programming career.

I don't understand the 1-star review; He didn't read the book all through i bet; or he hates C++. don't listen to that guy; go for us 5-star reviews and BUY THE BOOK! It'll save you millions of time than just buying 5 other books with 500 + pages on C++(if you really want to spend that much you can :) ).

This book gets you programming in C++ pretty quickly and is intended for readers who want concise lessons on the fundamentals of C++ and do not want to have to learn from an phonebook sized book. You build a software calculator and add functions with each lesson, so each lessons builds or improves on the previous. You will need a companion C++ reference book to explain some subjects in more depth. Face it, if you are to master C++ you will have to buy a few more books. This is the price for making a short concise learners book. Also, do not expect to wiz through every lesson in 10 mins, some take longer.

This book would be greatly improved if the full source code was available online for each lesson. It would certainly speed up the learning pace closer to the 10 mins promised. They do post the listings (example code in book) provided in the book, but that is not the source code only pieces of it. I have completed 14 lessons (out of 27) and have become stuck in lesson 15 due to the unclear instruction and construction of the program. The book builds on previous chapters in the book, so skipping chapters is not possible (unless the source code was available).

If you get this book see my post on Jesse's forum for errata through lesson 15. It should help you and maybe you can help me. [...]

Many of the exercises do not run . Problems with syntax , some of the functions look like they have been written in isolation and not tested with the main code . In exercise 13 the types don't match with the calling code , expecting an int , but being called with a float . I've used other books written by Jesse Liberty and had the same problem . I suggest Jesse should try testing the exercises before releasing books .Will not be purchasing any of his books in the future
