A MUST-HAVE for home recording!!

I haven't had this long, but WOW!! This was a M A J O R score for my home studio!! My amazing singing buddy suggested I buy a dynamic mic for home recording because it works better for vocals in rooms full of reverb than condenser mics (I have a Rode condenser mic too). After this purchase, I may not need my condenser mic anymore!! For the price point, This thing is OUTSTANDING!!

I found out about this mic from Podcastage on YouTube. The original dynamic mic I wanted, the Samson CS Microphone, was discontinued except for here on Amazon (where it was triple the original price), so I had to do some digging to find a good alternative. Unlike with my Zhiyun Smooth purchase, I researched before I slammed my money down on the virtual Amazon counter. After seeing many reviews, comparisons & unboxing videos, I decided it would be worth a shot. When it came in, everything I needed was inside the box. I have an interface, so I used the XLR cable instead of the USB (sidenote: I also haven't plugged my headphones into the headphone jack on the mic). As soon as I plugged it in, I did a sound check & was pleasantly surprised!! I didn't expect the mic to be so clear. I might use this mic for more than just recording if I can find a cable long enough to travel to performances with.

This mic shattered my misconception about dynamic mics (which I thought all sounded the same). DEFINITELY A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR HOME STUDIO, whether for music production or podcasting.

TL;DR: Excellent sound quality, requires some additional peripherals and you may need to adjust your speaking habits. You may experience a hardware quirk. Research how you plan to use it before buying.

The microphone itself is of excellent value. When I compare the sound quality from my current recordings to past recordings with alternative microphones I've used, the Samson Q2U definitely sounds the most "professional" while being in the same price range as my two other microphones (the Blue Snowball and Antlion ModMic 5). By "professional", I describe this as my voice sounds very clear, natural and detailed (voice sounds fuller and doesn't seem like I'm speaking through a tin can), and there is virtually no background noise.

My setup for the Samson Q2U is the microphone along with a 'NEEWER Adjustable Boom Arm' to hold the mic. The Q2U sports a 3.5mm audio port on the bottom. The port is a nice touch since I have two wide monitors and my desktop itself sits on the right side, while my main monitor (along with the Mic) is on the left side. It saves me the trouble of dealing with an additional long headphone cable on top of a long USB cable (for the mic).

The Q2U is a dynamic microphone so it typically only picks up loud noises. Regardless, I still run it with low gain to further reduce background noise (such as mechanical keyboard pummeling and furious mouse clicking). This requires me to speak directly into the microphone in order to be picked up clearly--as a person who is naturally soft spoken and moves around a lot, I needed to project my voice more and be diligent at staying centered in front of the mic.

In terms of sound quality, the Snowball and Q2U were the closest, however the Snowball, in contrast to the Q2U, is a condenser microphone and picked up a lot more background noise. Reducing the gain on the Snowball required me to move closer to it (the stand it comes with is short so I had to lean into it), and doing so also meant I had to get a pop filter. The Snowball is also heavier than the Q2U (and is top heavy because of its form factor). Placing it in front of my keyboard/mouse meant accidentally knocking it over at times. I could have use the Snowball along with a boom arm, but its form factor along with the pop filter made it a little bit too obtrusive for my taste. The Q2U also comes with a stand but is not top heavy so it is more stable.

The Antlion ModMic is probably my favorite because it doesn't require a boom arm or a microphone stand that may get in your way. Unfortunately the sound quality of the modmic is marginally better than microphones you'd find on gaming headsets (I've used the Razer Carcharias and Steel Series Siberia V2). Headset microphones typically make your voice sound tinny and almost 'phone like'.

My only gripe with the Samson Q2U is that there is a strange problem with the device (otherwise I'd get five stars): Upon booting up my computer, the microphone's power indicator flashes red and green rapidly and will continue doing so indefinitely. While it is flashing, the microphone is unusable--the microphone will output static. In order to address this, I have to unplug and reinsert the USB cable every time I power cycle my computer. This is a known issue with the microphone and appears to have been reported in other reviews and forum posts on the internet as well, but does not appear to have an official solution. Do note, however, that the issue seems to be present on other USB microphones as well. For reference my motherboard is an ASRock AB350 ITX motherboard.

I selected the Samson Q2U as an affordable choice for podcast interviews I was doing. There are a lot of recommendations for other mics that are several hundred dollars. That isn't in my budget!

Pros: Easy set up. USB or cable connection. Both long cords so you can move things around. Works with Skype. Works with wireless headphones.
Con: The only "con" I can say about this is that I don't particularly care for the stand. It's a little flimsy feeling. I appreciate that it comes with a stand, but it's not as stable as I want. but I can remedy that with a future purchase.

This is a great choice if you're just starting out and are on a budget.

Updated May 2018: I've used this for several podcast interviews I've done now and it's great. I'm clear and loud and the interviewer gets a great podcast recording. My son is even using it now for some music recording.

Awesome budget mic choice!

For voice recording such as a podcast this cannot be beat for the price. I wouldn't say it sounds like a $300-$400 mic, but it really sounds good, both on USB and XLR connections, and the direct monitoring (for USB only) works perfectly. Great choice for travel, but buy a different desktop stand, a folding one if you're taking it on the road. This stand does need the height extender (unless you hunch-over the desk, or are very short!), which was a good idea but I found the threading was defective. I have the AT2005USB mic, and (although I love AT mics) this one is way better. In Windows 8.1, for USB recording I need the volume way up at 95 -- the Windows USB mic driver STINKS any later than Win 7, so that's not too surprising -- but there is pretty much zero hiss or self-noise even at that level. On XLR I also have to push the pre-amp pretty hard, but that's pretty much as expected for a dynamic mic, and again the results are good. On USB there's only 16 bit but it will do 48,000, which sounds good. I have some "better" mics but this one is my new favorite just for fun and travel, and to recommend for beginners who want to improve their sound.

I have only used it with the XLR connection because I heard a guy on YouTube reviewing some audio inputs for making videos and he was jumping from gaming headphone mic to this mic on usb connection and then XLR connection and XLR was so warm and crystal clear that it made my mind up to buy it and I am glad I did

I run this through the behringer 402 with the XLR connection and I love it, the best I ever bought, I would use headset mic’s all the time until I heard this and I will never go back to headset mic’s although I just bought the corsairs mh571 headset and the mic on this is also very good but you can have multi inputs setups for software like OBS if u like to livestream or make recordings.

This mic will not pickup background noises, it has to be very close to your mouth the pick up the sound u can put the gain up on a mixer and pick more sound up of course but this mic is for you voice and your voice alone

Update: using the mic now for a couple of months, haven't seen any dip in performance or quality and i think this is a great budget setup for anyone wanting to do podcasting, YouTube or LIVE performance on the cheap, highly recommend.

Noise during monitoring and USB issues

Generally OK (with all pros and cons of dynamic microphones) but it has two very annoying problems:
- When microphone is unmuted in system settings I get a lot of noise in my headphones plugged into a monitoring output. However, this is neither the microphone/preamp noise nor the headphone amp noise because when I listen to a recording I made earlier and mute the microphone the noise is mostly gone. Turning the switch off on the microphone doesn't fix this issue, it has to be done via microphone slider/mute switch in the system.
- After rebooting my PC I have to unplug/plug the USB cable for the microphone to work. Before that everything looks normal but there is no audio/mic.

I read reviews before purchasing this and they were booming but in my experience the stand which comes with it is poorly thought out and the microphone itself is super quiet unless you are real close to it maybe thats just the type of the microphone but i expected it to perform ok if i was 30cm away from it but you have to be within 10-15cm for it to pick anything up and thats after increasing the gain to maximum.

Not sure if that means its faulty or not... something to look into i guess.

Good for what it is - I like the dual XLR and USB connections and it is very easy to set up and use. Not so big on the included "tripod stand", as it looks and feels a little bit cheaply made, but it is a good stand nonetheless. I would not recommend using foam windshields with this microphone as the elastic surrounding the metal ring in the centre of the ball-top mesh can come off quite easily if done so. I also do not like the fixed gain in the USB connection, and the XLR provides much more variable sensitivity. However, because it is a dynamic microphone, you need an amplifier or audio interface with quite a high gain level (I recommend 40 dB at the minimum). The headphones are just as good, if not slightly better. All in all, quite pleased. :)

Some problems but overall happy

Overall I'm happy with this new mic. The only issues come from the fact that I didn't even receive a pair of the HP20 headphones with my order, meaning I had to get a discount. Stand is an ideal height on my desk however I had to tighten the mic handle as the mic would cause the handle to tilt downwards, due to weight. Only other issue was that the stand of the base became slightly unstable as the mic extender wouldn't screw into it as tightly as I'd wish. Minus those complaints, if you actually get all the products listed with this item, I still think it's great value for money.

(EDIT: Actually the lack of grip on the mic stand is really annoying me now, might have to glue it just to make it more secure now. It's a good job I'm still happy with the mic quality as a whole!)

Fantastic Microphone, I've used this to get some guests on major radio stations in the UK, they sound great.

I also love that it's an all in one kit, you get a microphone (with USB AND XLR built in) you get a mic stand, and you get a pair of headphones - all you need to add is a laptop or computer.

I really love the microphone, it's even got a remote volume control and built in USB and headphone out.

I carry this kit with me everywhere, in my back pack, unfortunately the headphones haven't survived this treatment, so I use my own, that's the only downside I have for this, and as that's just an accessory it's pretty darn good.
