Most airlines allow 62 inches linear size (Length plus width plus height) and without the zipper expanded this suitcase just makes the limit when including the wheels (some airlines I have found will ignore wheels, others will not). If you open the expansion part then this case will not meet the 62 inch linear size. In fact, if you stuff this full you probably need to add a strap to bring the two halves closer together in order to make that 62 inch total. In fact the listed dimensions here on Amazon are 28.5 x 20.5 x 13.5 which sums to 62.5 which is actually half an inch larger than the airlines technically allow. The same dimensions are on their site. I don’t know if that is with it expanded or not. It passed muster at Southwest, but it was not that full. Usually I find they look at the weight rather than the size unless it is gigantic. That said, if you stuff this thing completely full you are likely to go over the 50 lb limit. This is big bag.
I like the semi hard shell, it is nice for protecting more breakable stuff and when these suitcases get left out in the rain uncovered, your stuff tends to stay drier than when in a soft sided suitcase. In fact, to test it I put some towels in it, and then ran the shower on it for a few minutes. The zippers of course got a bit wet, and when standing up a small amount of water got through. When on its side the stuff stayed dry.
The inside has a mesh cover for one side and elastic straps for the other, there is one long zippered pocket along the back side.
The spinner wheels are so frictionless that you can turn it in any direction with ease. It still has inertia, especially when filled to 50lbs. The nice thing about the spinner wheels is that you can shove it along with your knee while it is standing up as you move along in line.
The lock is built in and works by basically locking the zippers pulls in place through holes in the zipper pulls. The lock directions are wrong. It shows to set it that you put it to 0 0 0 and push in a button to set your own 3 digit combo. The location of this button is incorrect in the diagram, they show it next to the number wheels and it is actually on the other side, away from the wheels. This lock is not going to stop anyone , in fact the directions say “ locks are intended only to prevent accidental opening and cannot prevent theft of case or its contents”. These locks will stop a casual theft perhaps. I did see if you could reset the lock by putting it back on 0 0 0 and pushing the set button and that did not work (so write down the combo you choose!)
Overall this is nice suitcase at the price point. I am taking off a bit for the fact that they made the dimensions actually 62.5 so that it is technically oversize, and thus the expansion portion is useless if you are flying (and you may worry about oversize charges if you get a picky gate agent) and for the fact that the directions for the lock are wrong.
Unfortunately, on the return journey of the first aircraft trip I took the polycarbonate side was cracked open and water leaked in and damaged items of mine.
I expect rough treatment by airlines but I feel that either I got extremely unlucky or this suitcase isn't up to muster thanks to the quest for minimal weight. I would expect a hard-side case to last through more than one instance of abuse? People buy hard-side cases to protect their items and I don't feel like you can be confident in this suitcase after my incident.
