Love the bag, but disappointed in the stitching and quality

I love my bag, and I use it every day for work. I'm carrying a Dell Latitude e7440, which is a relatively lightweight laptop, plus a charger and some miscellaneous personal items (lightweight, nothing heavy). I have used it every day for work since I purchased it, and I have travelled with it a few times as well.

I have not had any issues with it, except within a few months of use, the threading/stitching began to break away from the laptop softpack. It has pretty much completely unraveled at this point. This started within 3 or 4 months of using it. I've continued to use it for the last ~9 months or so since I bought it, and I probably will continue to use it, but I am disappointed about the threading issues and expect more from Samsonite. I will probably try to stitch it back together when it comes off completely, but really, I shouldn't have to and I would expect it to last several years without me having to doctor it up :(

5 years of daily use, Dozen+ Transpacific business trip and still going strong

I bought this bag from Amazon back in January 2014, and have since used it everyday, for these entire 5 years. This backpack is incredible. It is well organized, and can hold a lot of stuff. I've used it for business travel, for personal vacations, overnights, commuting and it pretty quickly just became the thing I took everywhere with me. I have kept 3 different laptops in the storage compartment, and none of them have ever taken any damage through multiple drops. The bag has cosmetic wear through 5 years of constant use, but every seam and stitch still holds perfect even when I still stuff it near exploding.

I'm retiring it today because I forgot a frozen bread starter in the bag over a weekend, which exploded and coated the entire inside in sticky bread dough. I'm going to give it a good deep cleaning, and keep it as a backup backpack. I just wanted to say before it's retirement, this backpack has gone through half a decade of hard service with aplomb, and I cannot say a poor word about it. Truly a great purchase, this bag will serve you well.

Not For School Use!

Do not buy this backpack if you want to use it for school. I bought this backpack for high school because it seemed to be very spacious, what I needed to be able to fit binders, books, and other items. Do not know how much time has passed (but the school year has definitely not finished, I think after December or earlier than that) but suddenly the stitching near the zipper of the largest compartment started to come apart, giving the appearance that I simply forgot to zip it all the way. A big hole developed which could not be covered up in any way, which made it dangerous for situations when it would suddenly rain outside and I forgot to bring an umbrella and easy for people to see what I have inside the bag. So big that a hand could easily reach in through it. I did not do anything to it, just normal carrying it around school.
Aside from that, the backpack itself is compact but very spacious. There is a separate section for your laptop and even has a special TSA-friendly function of splitting apart in the laptop section so separate the laptop from the other stuff in the backpack without having to take out the laptop itself. However, when you store your laptop in that compartment, there is no padding under it, giving it the vulnerability of hitting the floor and damaging it if you are not careful and cautious. Not sure how it would do for traveling purposes but if it could not withstand binders and books and simple carrying around a small school for short periods of time I do not know if it is a good choice at all for anyone looking for a backpack. I think that's why the price dropped to $50.

I have had Samsonite backpacks since I was a a high school student, and I think this is their best one yet.

Good:
-Separate padded laptop pouch, TSA friendly. This is a great feature as the full-open zip is not only TSA friendly, but also helps with access to the bag if you require it. I've been on several flights and it's nice not having to take my laptop out of its bag, but take note that at least for Pearson international in Canada they ask that you take the computer out regardless. The adjustable strap makes it easy to fit either my old laptop that I keep for personal trips, or a slimmer work laptop
-Extremely comfortable. The straps are shaped so that the backpack fits snugly and pressure is distributed very evenly. The foam backing also adjusts to the contour of my back, but note that you can still get sweaty back syndrome on a hot day
-Numerous pockets. I don't use the headphone pouch, but it, the phone, and the tablet pouch are nicely lined with soft material. The internal documents folder was way more helpful than I expected- no more crunched sheets of loose paper or bent notebooks. This backpack swallows everything from full textbooks to everything you need for a weekend getaway
-The strap that goes over a carry-on handle is a simple feature but makes travelling through the airport a breeze, particularly with swivelly bags.
-I appreciate the side pockets with stretchy elastics to conform to umbrellas and bottles and holds them in place
-Overall quality of the bag is very good. In fact, the backpack after holding so much of my crap through travel and work, still holds onto its shape and doesn't turn into a floppy mess.The bag is built so that it's unlikely that you'll rip it if you load it all the way up, the zippers and grabs are substantial, and the bag just gives you a general feeling that it will last forever. If it doesn't, it has a lifetime warranty, which as I'll explain below, is quite handy.

Cons:
-Looks... like a backpack. This may be the go-to option if you're after a discreet or "business backpack", but it's not particularly glamorous or fashionable in any sense. If you're a student with a penchant for putting buttons or badges or the like, this is a good backpack to start off with since the front face is so flat and square.
-The main compartment doesn't have the traditional massively thick and strong zipper that Samsonites are known for, with a beefy grab. This one will do the job, but I'm not careful about opening and closing the backpack whereas for other Samsonites I would just wrench on those zippers without any care.
-The top handle is very nice to hold. Unfortunately, in my case, probably due to the abuse that I subject all of my travel bags to, I managed to get it to rip on one side. So top tip: if this bag is lodged between several other bags, don't yank on it like there's no tomorrow trying to get it out, treat your stuff better than I do and kick other people's bags out of the way first =) Luckily, Samsonite has a global lifetime warranty. I took the bag to the nearest service center, and they fixed it good as new (in fact they added additional stitching to make the zone tougher).

Conclusion: For the price, this is by far the best backpack I have ever bought, and I'm seriously in love with it. It's become one of my go-to travel companions, and while it might not be pretty, it does everything you can ask for it, with tons of features that simply make your travelling life easier more comfortable. The fact that it's backed up with a lifetime warranty and is so cheap when on sale makes it a complete winner.

I thought it would be good to share my experience with this backpack for longer than a few weeks. I know that this is something I look for in a review, because build quality can not be truly known until significant time has elapsed through day to day use.

I've been very happy with this bag. Even after 6 months, it still looks brand new. No fraying on the material, seams, etc; all zippers are intact and working as on day 1. It's the perfect size for me, not too big and not too small.

As my work requires a fair amount of travel, I've taken it on 7 trips to far, both in NA and abroad. I take it to the office every day and I always have my laptop, battery/charger, mouse, notebook and a few documents. I'm not sure how it would fair if I was a student lugging large chemistry and physics textbooks on a regular basis.

The handle is also fully intact, no lost stitching; although I try not to use it too often. The "SmartStrap" luggage strap works quite well. It's very useful that the backpack keeps its shape and can stay upright on its own. The checkpoint friendly laptop compartment is very convenient- this feature is very important to me as one who travels quite often.

The only minor con is that it sits a bit high (i'm almost 6 ft) on my back, and it's better to have both straps on. With one strap, the bag tends to fall off my shoulder. But this is not so bad to deduct a star.

All in all, I'm very satisfied!

Just took this on a 3-week vacation to Asia and it performed like a champ. Enough capacity for my only carry-on baggage, and was at full capacity when I left my suitcase behind for 3 nights. Comfortable and held up well; at first I thought they went overboard with the padding on the back and straps, but definitely makes a difference. Well designed full-length zippered compartments with a place for all my gadgets and essentials, and luggage strap comes in handy (should be standard on all travel backpacks). Hope it lasts for many more trips.

This backpack is comfortable on the back even loaded down. I recently used it for a trip and had it stuffed at over 13lbs. I carried it around all day without problems.
I also use it for work. The laptop fits well and there are lots of nice compartments for cables, speakers, headsets, etc.
Last week I even carried a half full cup of tea in the side compartment, no issues. There are pockets on each side to hold a water bottle.
I wish I would have bought this along time ago.

I purchased this backpack to accomplish several objectives:
1. Regular commute to work via driving.
2. Occasional air travel with day trip
3. Occasional air travel with an overnight stay.
4. Casual non-office use

The Xenon 2 has comfortably achieved the first three objectives. The fourth objective, however, has been a hit and miss since I started DSLR photography, as the backpack itself is heavy compared to dedicated camera backpacks and fitting in the gear has been a challenge. Having said that, there was one unique trip when I took my DSLR with a single lens (Nikon D3300 with a 70-300 telephoto), along with office peripherals (laptop, charger, notebook, change of clothing for overnight, cables etc), and everything worked out well - but the bag was very heavy!

The laptop sleeve is very helpful at airport security. There are sufficient nooks and crannies, but the one thing which occasionally annoys me is the fact that the items in the big zipper pocket in front might be difficult to access if the center section is full - items such as a small lunch bag with a small ziplock/rubbermaid type of storage, a notebook, laptop charger, noise cancelling headphones in its case and other peripherals can make this an issue on occasion. My current workaround is using small organizers for ensuring items are not scattered. Similarly, I have flown on small Air Canada planes, and this backpack will fit in most overhead bins, and certainly fits under the seat in front of me. Never have had to gate-check!

At present, the backpack contains the following items, which makes for a comfortable office commute:

Laptop sleeve - Dell 15" latitude laptop
Center pocket
- notebook
- spare set of glasses in case
- organizer with laptop travel charger and travel mouse
- small organizer with a 3-port aukey charger and three usb cables
Front big zip pocket
- small medicine bag
- small usb flash drive storage case

I don't use the zip pocket in the very front of the bag - typically use it to hold receipts while traveling.
Same applies for the top pocket which is designed to hold cellphones etc - mostly empty.

17" Laptops - Beware! Misleading product title and information.

The perceived build quality of this bag seems to be fine on my initial impression. It looks and feels really well-made.

However, the reason I'm giving this 1 star is because the product description and even the question/answers from the customers are HIGHLY MISLEADING.

Perhaps this bag can barely fit a 17.0" laptop if you squeeze it in, and I doubt it would fit in the secured laptop compartment either. That said this bag definitely CANNOT fit a 17.3" laptop, that's for sure. When I received this bag, the tags on it clearly indicate that it's meant for 13" to 15.6" laptops only (see photos).

I cannot understand for the life of me why this is advertised as "17-inch" in the title. Worse yet, you have comments from other customers (questions & answers) saying things like: "[...] this thing will fit up to a 20 inch if you really wanted to [...] I have a 17inch and it fits beautifully".

False. False. False. I don't know if I was sent a smaller version of this bag by mistake, or if people are confused about their laptop sizes. Really disappointed. Had to drive far to pick this up from the post office. Big waste of time. Returning it. Please update the information on this product and don't advertise it as a 17" backpack.
