V-NAND Technology Maximizes Endurance Under Intensive WorkloadsThe 850 EVO SSD features Samsung vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology that stacks cell layers on top of one another to increase density, performance, and efficiency while creating a smaller footprint. When compared with the conventional Planar NAND technology over a five-year period, V-NAND technology increases endurance, prolongs lifespan, and is more resistant to wear when under heavy client workloads. |
Fast Read/Write Speeds with TurboWrite Technology and RAPID ModeUsing Samsung TurboWrite technology, the 850 EVO creates a high-performance write buffer area that accelerates performance whenever a write operation is underway. To boost performance for up to 2x faster* data processing speeds, you can activate RAPID Mode, a feature that reduces performance bottlenecks by utilizing unused PC memory as cache storage. These features make the 850 EVO ideal for demanding applications such as gaming, graphic and sound design, and data analysis. |
Thermal Monitoring and Encryption for Data SecurityThe 850 EVO uses AES 256-bit hardware-based drive encryption** to ensure your data is kept secure from unwanted access. It also features Dynamic Thermal Guard, a technology that automatically throttles the drive's temperature when it approaches dangerous levels to reduce the risk of overheating. The 850 EVO is also backed by a five-year warranty up to 75TBW (Terabytes Written)***. |

a. I installed it in a Lenovo M 93 small-form-factor desktop, which came with an OEM version of Windows 8.1, which I had forgotten. I had later installed Windows 10 during the time when Microsoft was offering it free. At the time of the SSD installation, it no longer was.
b. The solution, according to Lenovo, was to reinstall Windows 8.1 (on the new SSD), the discs for which I couldn't find (lesson one). So, for $70 Lenovo sent me a flash drive, which was supposed to have Windows 8.1 on it. Unfortunately, the company sent me Windows 10 Pro. As I had forgotten that the machine came with Windows 8.1, I dutifully installed Windows 10 Pro only to find that it would not activate because Windows was looking for the original product key, which I didn't have.
c. I mistakenly assumed (lesson two) that I could simply buy (download) of Windows 10 Home and loaded as a clean install. Having done this, it still would not activate.
d. Finally, after several more calls to Microsoft, they told me that downloading Windows 10 Home would not work because it would sense the presence of Windows 10 Pro. In reality, it did install, or so it seemed, except when I checked to see what version of the operating system was actually on the drive, it was still Windows 10 Pro.
e. The answer, according to Microsoft, was to get Windows 10 Home on a flash drive, which asks for a product key (the download did not), after which activation would be possible. And it was.
f. So obviously this was a long, tedious process that largely due to my ignorance cost me $130 for another copy of Windows 10, which I could've avoided by first installing the original OEM version of Windows 8.1--- if I could find the discs and the product key.
g. So for those who find themselves in the same position, don't let this discourage you from replacing your hard drive with an SSD. The benefits are enormous. This machine is running a very fast Core i7-4790 with 12 GB of RAM but in many cases it still was sluggish. Installation of the SSD reduced the boot time from 55 seconds to 12 seconds. Many other operations proceed at a dramatically faster pace as well.
I did some benchmarks using CrystalDiskMark 4.0.3:
Original drive:
Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 24.695 MB/s
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 25.088 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.484 MB/s [ 118.2 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.642 MB/s [ 156.7 IOPS]
Sequential Read (T= 1) : 24.747 MB/s
Sequential Write (T= 1) : 24.957 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.431 MB/s [ 105.2 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.624 MB/s [ 152.3 IOPS]
Samsung 120GB SSD:
Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 130.416 MB/s
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 125.590 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 26.479 MB/s [ 6464.6 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 47.746 MB/s [ 11656.7 IOPS]
Sequential Read (T= 1) : 115.557 MB/s
Sequential Write (T= 1) : 120.372 MB/s
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 22.022 MB/s [ 5376.5 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 35.948 MB/s [ 8776.4 IOPS]
I have an Asus A53U-EH11 laptop, and it was not performing well, despite the multiple attempts to reinstall windows. The thing I noticed that slowed it down was the hard drive light was always on, meaning the drive is slow. The first thing I decided to do was to replace the drive with an SSD. I`ve heard many great things about the previous Samsung 840 Evo SSDs, and decided that I would give their next generation SSD a try. The prices have also finally dropped to something that I can afford.
Shipping took two days, and it came in a padded envelope. In the box, there is the SSD, the Samsung Magician software, and the installation guide. The SSD does NOT come in an anti-static bag. Samsung realizes that it is completely unnecessary, and I`m glad that they do.
Installation was very simple with my laptop. Just pop off the panel, remove the old drive, and pop this one in. I loaded a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, installed all the drivers and updates, and all my programs. At this point, the laptop is so much faster. My laptop even has the older SATA II controller, and I`m getting SATA III speeds. The sequential read was 520 MBps, and the sequential write was 450 MBps. SATA II is only suppose to go up to 300MBps, so imagine this drive in a SATA III controller.
The Samsung Magician software is probably one of the best I`ve ever used. There`s options to optimize for capacity, performance, or reliability, total data written to the drive, firmware updater, you name it. I optimized my system for performance, and I`ll say, I don`t see myself buying a new laptop anytime soon, and if I do, I`ll be putting this SSD in. For $70, my laptop performs better than many new laptops out there, despite it being almost four years old. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a speed boost on an older computer, or prefers speed over capacity. Definitely would buy this again, and plan on buying one for my desktop soon.
Top reviews from other countries
Delivery was very rapid. I had ordered at 6:00 PM on a certain day and had it delivered the next day morning. Truly impressive.
This is my first SSD. I had bought it for my desktop PC. While the product is entirely as described ( I even ran a benchmarking tool), I am not fully convinced it is necessary for most users. The high cost and the comparatively lower storage space is hardly worth it in most cases.
This review is aimed at a non-technical user. Many reviews of SSDs online paint a picture of hard drives being very slow and how you can never go back and stuff like that. While there is a market for such products, it is comparatively small. But they are far more vocal about their opinion which can make a layman believe they are a must have.
Simply put, an SSD (primarily) makes read and write much faster. Your system would boot faster (single digit number of seconds), applications launch faster, and games load faster. This matters in some cases. For example, my friend, to who composes music, which loads gigabytes of libraries onto the RAM from the hard drive (he has huge amounts of RAM too) and an SSD makes a lot of difference here, especially if you are doing this several times a day.
If you are a casual gamer like myself, you’ll find games load faster. But to be clear, they don’t work better, have better graphics or improve performance. They simply load faster. Unless your game is all loading screens, it’s hardly worth it.
Similarly, applications open a lot quicker, and it is noticeable. For example, on my laptop, Microsoft Word launches in 3 seconds. But then again, once open, it won’t work any faster. I still find this speed of opening pretty cool though.
SSDs do a couple of other things as well. They draw lesser power, are more resistant to mechanical shock, etc as compared to hard drives. In a desktop PC, they don’t matter, but in a laptop, they are a big deal. A drop won’t risk wiping your drive, and wake from sleep is super fast while during sleep, battery drain is minimal. MacBooks are awesome for due to this major reason.
So, in conclusion don’t let those graphs of SSD vs HDD influence you too much. They don’t represent numbers relevant for real world use, for YOUR use. Only you know your usage needs, and large storage to keep all your photos movies etc on your device is pretty cool. It may not be worth trading this for faster boot. However, having said all this, laptops work very well with SSDs since you will use more than just “fast storage”.
Finally, I chose Samsung over other brands like SanDisk and Toshiba mainly because this one offers much higher write speeds (which I am still not sure if I need). In most cases, read speeds are more useful. Samsung also gives 5 years warranty for this drive, which no one else does. I would like to think it is of higher quality, though honestly, I am not sure if the other ones are of “poor quality”. But this drive itself, is excellent. After all, I didn’t find too many people on forums online complaining that their (non-Samsung) SSD failed. So maybe other options are also good.
I encountered some technical obstacles while installing this ssd but it has nothing to do with this ssd, rather it is the problem with my own computer. I have an "All-in-one Lenovo C225 desktop computer, it has AHCI mode but despite my best effort I could not make this ssd work in ahci mode and finally i had to use this under IDE mode. Samsung magician later gave me some optimization options. Overall there is certainly some improvement in the performance of my computer. Files like microsoft word, adobe, and many other files load definitely faster now, although my google chrome looks little slower to load initially, but again overall performance is better on this ssd compared to my previous hdd.
After all it is the limitations in my own computer - I have only sata 2 but not and sata 3, and I cannot use ahci etc. Then to complicate the things I overwrote or recloned the ssd again and after I did this I found out in the internet I should not have overwritten it the way I did it. I over wrote it using the samsung magician, all I did is simply connected it to the computer and asked the samsung magician to clone it again. No where in the internet it is given this is how it should be done. I think the more proper way to do the recloning or rewriting or overwriting (whatever you want to call this process) is by using softwares like Secure Erase etc, but at that moment I did not know it. It is possible the performance might have been affected due to overwriting or recloning or rewriting.
Inspite of technical limitations with my computer and the possible mistake of rewriting or recloing the ssd I am still overall happy with this ssd.
The ssd looks great, problem unfortunately is with my own computer.
Just an addendum/update after using this ssd for few days now;
My google chrome was giving problems little bit so I restarted using the Internet Explorer browser again and now I see some improved speed during browsing too. So now I can say the whole computer works faster since I started using this ssd - so I am overall very happy now. If I had sata 3 system & AHCI enabled and also if I probably did not overwrite or reclone the ssd may be I could have seen further speed boost, but now with this ssd I definitely see an all around improvement compared to my previous traditional spinning type hard drive - which is definitely very slow compared to this SSD.

Performance wise I couldn't make an accurate comparison as this was for a new build as a boot drive. The system overall is a lot more powerful than my laptop so it obviously runs and loads faster but I was expecting it to boot to windows a bit faster considering friends have reported 6 second boot times. Though mine is still well under a minute
That could be an issue of settings but I'm docking a star regardless.
All in all you'd probably be glad if you were upgrading from an HDD. I can at least say that this thing makes zero noise as opposed to the HDD underneath it which sometimes sounds like it's deadlifting.
