I just wrote a long review of the Sandisk Extreme Pro 480GB, which I bought 2 of just before this model was released. I've now had two of these for about a week and I thought I'd compare them, because until these become available the Sandisks were what I was buying for performance.

First, I haven't done a controlled performance test of these drives. However, if you check some of the good review sites (like anandtech dot com) and others, you'll find that the tested performance is almost identical. They are both very fine drives, and both have 10-yr warranties, which is a marketing issue, as you're unlikely to be using this in 10 years any way.

At this point, I will continue to buy this one rather than the equivalent Sandisk Extreme Pro. First, it has more space as Samsung allows the entire 512GB to be used, whereas Sandisk only allows 480GB as they are reserving the difference for 'over-provisioning' whereby they have spare sectors to be used when (as happens with all SSD's) sectors fail with use.

More importantly, Samsung's use of V-NAND indicates that the transistors (which are very different and what appears to be a huge leap forward) are more resistant to wear. This is clearly indicated by the fact that Samsung warranties the drive for a lifetime total of 150TB, whereas Sandisk warranties for 80TB. And this is important, as the 10-yr warranty means nothing if you exceed their total.

having said that, techreport dot com is in the midst of a months-log torture test of drives and even the ones to fail first have vastly exceeded the manufacturer's expected limits, in a way that has surprised the heck out of everyone. So the bottom line is that even if 'used hard' as consumer drives, it's unlikely that either one will ever fail to perform well and long.

I bought my 850 Pro back in November of 2014. I also installed Samsung Magician software. The drive has been running extremely well. Magician notified me of a firmware update a few days ago and I went ahead with the update. This morning I received the dreaded I/O boot error. After 2 hours of troubleshooting connected devices and cables, etc., I zeroed in on the drive. Dead. I called Samsung, and before I told tech the reason for my call, he started talking about processing an rma. He knew. Apparently the latest firmware update has nuked 850 Pro drives when the update is installed through Samsung Magician software. I am going to replace the drive and leave the firmware alone. In fact, I have found there really is no need to install the Samsung Magician software at all.
====
02/25/2105: Just a follow up note to state the obvious. If you own the 850 Pro and have Samsung Magician software installed and decided to update to the most recent firmware version through the software, then you need to back up and image the drive ASAP in case of failure. My drive ran fine for a few days after the update, then came sudden death. I don't have the firmware rev. that caused this but it is the last one issued. Samsung C.S. (800) 726-7864.

Just started using this SSD today. Installed it easily using windows 8.1 and then ran a speed test. It showed a respectable 270 mb/s as shown in the first attached photo but I was expecting much more, about 500. So I ran the Samsung Magician program that came with it to see what the problem was. Magician stated that everything inside my computer was set to run the SSD at its "maximum performance". Reassuring but not an answer.

Then I noticed on the Magicians left side bar, near the bottom was something called "Rapid Mode"? So what the heck, turned it on, re-booted my computer, and re-ran the SSD speed test. See attached photo after Rapid Mode. Now it's reporting 4983 mb/s? Not sure why, or if that is a believable number. Perhaps it is magic.

Got this to speed up my 2011 Macbook Pro. Works great.

A couple of tips:

1) First, make sure that you backup your internal HDD to an external Hard Drive using Time Machine.
A note for people that use Parallels Desktop for Mac to run Windows XP, 7 or 8/8.1: By default, Parallels is NOT backed up to your hard drive with Time Machine. Please make sure that the ".pvm" bundle file exists on your external drive backup BEFORE you manually install your SSD on your Macbook Pro.
The PVM file is bundle that contains the virtual machine configuration file (PVS), virtual hard disk file (HDD), and other files. You will need this bundle to run Parallels on your new SSD.
In order to backup your PVM bundle, make sure that you do the following:
•in Parallels Desktop 9:
switch to Security tab
Uncheck "Time Machine: do not backup with Time machine" checkbox

2) I would recommend putting in a clean install of the Mac OSX Mavericks from an 8GB bootable USB flash drive (Mavericks OSX 10.9.4 is about 5GB). Please check the vid below on how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MYJuSBaQXE&feature=youtu.be

3) Next watch this video on how to install an upgrade your Macbook Pro with an SSD
How to Upgrade your MacBook PRO to a SSD (Solid State Hard Drive):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBgjnIv0a7w

4) Once you boot up and see that everything is in working order, make sure you download TRIM. Enable it and reboot your system. Basically, in a nutshell, TRIM extends the lifespan of your drive and helps the SSD perform faster writes. The general consensus online is that if you have an aftermarket SSD (like Samsung's 850 Pro), it is highly recommended that you enable TRIM for your Macbook Pro. Check out this website:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvPGcQ__v68&feature=youtu.be

5) DO NOT DEFRAGMENT YOUR SSD!
