I was super excited to get this, I'm a mostly hardcore gamer with a 144Hz Gsync that is sensitive to input delay and refresh rates. I expected my socks to be knocked off the first time my PC booted and I did some general task stuff. Honestly? You can benchmark all you want, but there is 0 perceivable difference between an nvme and a Sata3 SSD outside of moving gigantic files.

Your games will maybe load 1 second faster. OS maybe boots slightly faster, but who does that?

The only thing I can objectively tell is different is I can move and delete huge files instantly. Perhaps it is more effective for someone who is doing 4K video editing.

If you're a gamer or just average user, just buy a regular SSD. Trust me.

How far we've come!

Amazing technology. I wanted the 960 series so bad but kept waiting for a price drop that never came. Now with the newer and better 970 series, I pulled the trigger and purchased one. This is the first time I've actually got my hands on an NVMe drive. I always thought they were about the size of RAM, but they are closer to a stick of gum in size. I can't believe how small they are. Installation is easy as long as you can get to it. In my case it's between PCIe slots so I had to remove my graphics card to install it. The BIOS saw it right away, then I simply used free partition-copying software to transfer the logical partitions and MBR to from my 750 EVO to my new 970. Then I set BIOS to boot from the new "stick of gum" and disabled the others. As a final step I removed drive letters from the two reserved partitions on the boot drive and reformatted the old boot drive to a blank GPT. I can definitively tell a difference when loading applications with a large footprint compared to the SATA-based SSD. I was hoping to see a noticeable difference in boot-time-to-desktop, but it's hard to tell. But when moving from Samsung SSD to faster Samsung SSD, trying to notice time savings is like splitting hairs. At this price point the drive is worth every penny.

Edit: Included a benchmark. 2,759 MB/sec write, and 2,313 MB/sec read. If you remember 3.5" floppies, this is like reading 1915 diskettes every second.

Edit2: After realizing that I wasn't getting the rated speed (which no one will probably actually see), I started to look into it and I made sure that I had the latest BIOS update, the latest chipset and storage drivers, and the Samsung NVME driver. After doing all that, I re-ran the benchmark and now I'm over the 3000 MB/sec mark! It's fast out of the box but with proper setup it can be much faster!

well, the usual Samsung witchcraft ensued after a few months of use. Contrary to what the benchmark test still says this drive is now as slow and unresponsive as the Kingston drive that I have since thrown away. it's mojo and badassery dissappeared after an update installed. It's still a cool little drive but it looks like it's been throttled back possibly due to faster drives being in the works.

so far so good. I had a pre installed Kingston m.2 sata drive in my MSI gaming laptop and it did the job, just not very quickly. After cloning my system over to the 970 EVO I was eager to see the difference in speed. To my surprise the boot time didn't really change, it might be half a second faster, so little I began to wonder if the price was worth it. I decided to open Adobe Lightroom as that is what I primarily use this computer for. I had processed a batch of photos with the old drive and it had taken roughly 5 minutes to finish. I processed the same batch with the 970 EVO and it blew my mind, 45 seconds from import to batch adjustment and export. I am so happy with this drive, my photography work will happen so much quicker now.
Attaching the CrystalMark scores for both my old Kingston and the 970 EVO. I was hesitant to spend this much on a drive but now I can't wait to upgrade my desktop with one of these.

Great drive, horrible warranty/support when it fails.

I bought the drive just over a year ago and until recently, I was happy with it and would have given it a 5 star review.

However, I powered on my system (about two weeks ago now) and got greeted with a SMART error saying the drive was about to fail and I should backup the data. After hours of troubleshooting I was able to backup my data... only to then realize I could not delete my data off the failed drive. The drive is designed to put itself into a low-level Read-Only state to "protect" data, which is great... but there's no way to remove that Read-Only state to securely erase your data before sending it in for an RMA. I work in IT and have tried everything from removing the read-only state with diskpart and writing /dev/zero across the drive to using tools like Nwipe, nothing works.

There is a lot of sensitive information on my drive (finances, taxes, SSNs, etc. of mine and other peoples) that I am responsible for. Samsung has been 0 help in this matter, the only suggestion they made was to use the "Secure Erase" tool in Samsung Magician, which fails with an Error 29. They are adamant that I send the drive in to proceed with the RMA but won't help me remove this write lock that they've implemented.

Until now, I've always recommended Samsung's SSDs or M.2s to everyone I've spoken to (in person and online), despite them typically being a bit more pricey than competitors. That will not happen again... I have Samsung TVs, phones, drives, etc... I won't be buying or recommending another Samsung product. Nobody should ever be forced to choose between the privacy/security of their data and being eligible for a warranty claim.

Locking the drive like this is no different than how Apple throttled the performance of older iPhones. They both claim to have good motives ("to protect your data" or "to preserve battery"), but in reality it's not what the consumer wants. Yes, protecting the data is good... but there needs to be a consumer level tool to unlock the device... and since there isn't currently, drives that have sensitive data should not need to be returned to be replaced if they fail. Because I am unable to securely wipe the data, I can't send it in... and I'm therefore left with a ~$550 paperweight that doesn't weigh enough to hold papers down. Best case scenario, I make it into a $550 keychain.

And no, your canned message response isn't going to make it better. I've already dealt with your "customer service" department, they weren't helpful.

Ok, so this SSD is a breeze to install to your M.2 port, although there is some information that you wont' happen across easily and can help to know during install.

1 - Double check that your Samsung Magician software is the 'latest' version. Magician will always say it is the latest, but this is not always true. My Magician was 5.0 and said it was the latest version. But, it would not recognize my new NVMe drive until I downloaded Magician 5.2 from the Samsung website.

2 - There is a separate driver you will want to get for this drive from the Samsung website. Normally you would assume that having Magician would be enough, but the driver is separate.

3 - Ensure that when you look at your drive description in Magician, it says 3 x 4 and not 3 x 2 in the description on the drive page. If you are only using 2 channels, then you may need to adjust your BIOS so that you are toggled to x4 as opposed to x2 for the M.2 port. For me, my ROG Asus Maximus Hero X was toggled to x2 for some reason, and I needed to adjust it to x4 in advanced settings. Very easy, but running at x2 instead of x4 will cut your drive speed in half, so you want to ensure you are at x4.

4 - Last item ... if your drive is installed and everything should be aok, but Magician tells you that your drive is not recognized, you'll need to initiate it in disk management. This did not happen to me with the 970, although I cloned to it this time which initialized it automatically. But when I installed my other 860 a few months ago, it would not recognize it until I did this and it took some poking around to figure it out.

Hope this helps anyone that needs it. It's a wonderful drive. Cheers.

I got a new laptop (lenovo ideapad 330s 14inch). So that came with 4gb ram and 1tb HDD. Now, the performance of the factory configuration was just passable. I did a lot of research and found that the solution would be to put a SSD in it. So I decided to throw in this SSD along with an additional 8gb RAM. Since my laptop has a m.2 slot, I decided to go with this pcie nmve stick.

Let me tell you that the performance has upped by at least 10 times the original state. The boot times are around 15 seconds and the apps open up as soon as you click on them (Note that I have installed win 10 on the SSD itself. To take advantage of full potential of this product, install the OS on the SSD and use the HDD as a secondary mass storage drive). Windows is simple so so much better on an SSD and that too this one. Speeds are simply astounding.
In short, the performance is screeching fast. Great product !!

- La diferencia a un HDD es enorme, mi computadora tardaba 40 segundos hasta 60; ahora solo 3 a 4 seg, puedo cambiar de sistema de forma muy rápida y abre los programas bastante rápido también.

PRO TIP: USA EL SOFTWARE DE DATA TRANSFER DE SAMSUNG, te quitas dolores de cabeza cuando clonas tu HDD o antiguo SSD ya que puedes borrar el disco viejo sin problemas solo ten en cuenta que todo funcione bien en el nuevo SSD NVMe y puedes borrar el antiguo disco duro con los siguientes comandos en CMD, disklist, select disck 1 o 2 depende de tu arrange de disco, despues select disk 1, disk list ahora debe de haber un (*) en el disco que vas a borrar despues de clonar, despues porcede si estas seguro que ya lo puedes borrar bien metes el comando delate y listo te sale que todo fue exitosos y le das exit.

This review will solve most of your doubts (If not all) regarding SSD and how to install it and DIY in the home without anyone's help.

This is the best NVME SSD available in the market and if you have the money to spend on the SSD then go for it. It is the best.

Now talking about compatibility yes it is compatible with all laptops which are having M.2 NVME slot and having M keying. M keying means it will be having a single notch on the PCI-E slot as well as on the SSD.

For this review and youtube video, I am using the Asus FX553VD laptop which is beast and have the best configuration available in the market.

So talking about compatibility it is compatible with all modern laptop having M.2 PCI Express slot and the popular Laptop list is below.

Well if you want you can even clone your older windows onto this SSD without losing anything ( every program and setting will work same as it was on the older HDD ) using Samsung Data Migration software which is free and It will work flawlessly, although if possible go for a clean install as it will improve system performance.

You can still use your previous HDD without any doubt as a normal storage and this SSD is very well detected in bios so no issue on that.

Also talking about boot time it has reduced to one - third than my previous 7200 rpm hard disk which took around 16 seconds to boot.
