Firmware updates are now far and between as Samsung has made firmware improvements. Firmware is now at 1018. I have noticed an old and possibly a new browser issue. I noticed on one occassion after opening the browser settings window, I could not close it unless I reopened the browser. I have not tried to duplicate the issue since. An important old issue still remains... logging in at some websites don't work properly, such as Coursera.org, EDX.org, and Yahoo.com which sites I visit frequently. To login to Coursera and Yahoo, I use my keyboard to type my username and have to use the player's input to enter my password. With EDX I cannot login with the browser at all. Very frustrating! I can login to Amazon without problems.

Other player functionality remains great. I have not noticed much difference if any between the last couple of firmware updates.

Samsung made this a very strong player to beat its competition by incorporating a dual-core processor, a new simplified user interface much like Windows 8, improvements to word prediction, improvements to picture color, depth and clarity, increasing the amount of entertainment offerings, and improvements to the web browser for ease of use and speed.

I was on the market for something that would offer me some of the latest trends in home entertainment and some features that my 2010 Sony TV lacked. This blu-ray player can give your TV and home entertainment system that upgrade. After doing a lot of research on new players for 2013, this top of the line Samsung player outshines them all.

I bought this player to go with my new 65" Samsung HU8550. I Figured what's the point of an expensive 4k tv without an expensive 4k upscaling bot-ray player. Well whenever the blu-ray is outputting it's signal in 2160 my movies look dull almost DVD quality. The only way I can watch a clear movie it to set the blu-ray player to only output in 1080p man and not in 4k. The brilliant people at Samsung helpline could only deduct i needed to reset my players settings, which I tried. Finally after talking to the store I got my TV from (an exclusive samsung dealer) they got a hold of a samsung level 3 tech who said what was happening was not only was my player upscaling and outputting in 2160 but then my new 4k tv was upscaling too causing the dull picture. They said just leave the player on 1080p an I'll be fine. Which led me to the question, "what is the point of the 4k upscaling blu-ray player?" They're response was, "for you with the new model tv there really isn't a point. It's more for people with high end tvs and monitors with no upscaling capabilities." Well If I would have known that I could have just bought a cheaper standard blu-ray player. I don't even need the apps or the browser (have that on the tv already). Only really wanted it for 4k, which apparently it can't help me with.

I would say its undoubtedly one of the best blu ray players for 2013 with 4k upscaling with a few issues.

I have always been a fan of Samsung blu ray family. This time wanted to try out the others in the market as i was disappointed that my 2011 TV dint have Amazon instant video and so did my 2011 Samsung BDD6700 blu ray player.

I have tested out the following

1) Sony BDP-S790 (2012 model continues to 2013)
Have never been a great fan of Sony. But wanted to give it a try. I knew i am not a person who loves sony's interface and their clunky plastic remote, that makes noise every time you click a button. But yet, as i have heard the great picture quality i wanted to give it a try.

As expected, faster loads/reads of blu ray disc had great picture. But the annoying sounds from pressing the plastic button on the so plasticky remote, slow buffering speeds while watching internet movies (netflix, vudu) and everytime trying to figure out your network speed before playing a video on Amazon instant video just made me give this blu ray player up.

2) LG BP730 (2013)
Have heard good about this one as well, but you will have to try them out to actually find out how great they work :)
Best part of this was the Magic remote, its just so cool and fun to operate :)
Disc does load fast, slightly slower than Sony BDPS790. Noticeable difference between the picture quality of the same blu ray disc i had played on Sony, the quality here seemed to be little degraded.
When played internet tv, i did not face any buffering issues like i had faced with Sony but the picture quality while playing same video from netflix image was not clear at all (compared with Sony).

If you don't have a Smart TV, this player will let you connect to the Internet to browse the web from your TV. With this device you get access to Samsung's Smart Hub suite to stream videos on demand. Also, I was reading that you can watch your shows on demand with Catch Up TV services but I have not tried it yet. The S Recommendation feature suggests content based on your previous selections. Using the built-in Wi-Fi you can wirelessly share photos and videos with other devices. Anynet+ lets me control my TV and this device with 1 remote, you can actually control about a dozen HDMI devices with 1 remote. This device has dual-core 900Mhz processor, boot up is almost instant, loading movies and web pages load very quickly. Smart View sends video from your Blu-ray player to a Samsung mobile device. The picture is very clear, with great color and definition. Pictures especially in 3D are life like. The sound is crisp and clear, the audio output supports 7.1 channels. The device has 2 HDMI outputs. You can play and convert your music CD's into your MP3 players using the CD Ripping option.
