Firmware upgrade: Download / CD-R method was relatively painless, hassle free and took about 15+ minutes. Follow the simple instruction provided on-line.
Connectivity: If you have HDMI and Optical cables, connecting to a TV and/or AV Receiver / Home Theater Unit is simple and easy.
Player setup: On screen menu is intuitive, however, you need to know the capability of your TV /AV Receiver / Home Theater Unit to properly set up this unit.
Picture Quality: As good as you can get. We have been watching movies with $99 Samsung 1080p up-converter DVD player and 1080i HD broadcasting for sometime. These programs look great on our LCD TV, and the leap from there to this new 1080p player is not as great as some might experience the jump from a standard DVD player. Still picture quality, particularly from close viewing, is better and smoother on Blu-Ray discs.
Sound: Most BD's still come with standard Dolby Digital or DTS, and not with new HD format yet. For now I use digital bitstrem over an optical cable to AV receiver - DTS 96/24 still sounds great. For those who already have an old 7.1 surround receiver with no HDMI connection, you only get 5.1 analog conversion out put for HD sound from this unit and may not be able to enjoy full 7.1 HD experience (5.1 HD - yes).
Features: I use DVD player to watch movies, and personally don't care for other features such as new PnP. This unit has standard DVD player functions for watching movies, and yes it will start the movie from where you stop and turn off the unit.
Compatibility: I played BD, SD up conversion, Audio CD, MP3 disc, homemade CD-R and DVD-R movies without any problems so far.
I'll give my thumbs up for this unit. I am a bit puzzled with so many negative comments on this site. If you go to other electronics store web sites, user ratings for this unit are all above 4.0, not too bad for $300+ unit. This unit certainly deserves better rating than 3.0.
My only complaints with the player are the follwing:
- the disc tray doesn't always open immediately after I press the open button. Sometime I have to wait a minute or so.
- I wish stepping up to a faster (or slower) forward and reverse play was snappier. As it stands there is a second or so wait after you press the button for it to respond.
- I don't like the included screen saver
Some features that I really enjoy are:
- after being paused for awhile the screen saver comes on, but after that's been on for a bit the unit will just power down so it's not waisting electricity
- after powering down, the player starts playing the disc right where you left off
- the remote mirrors the layout of Samsung TV remotes. So if you have a Samsung TV you'll have no trouble using the BD remote
Even though the BD-1400 is a little sluggish, I still tink it's a great entry level player. I don't understand all the negative reviews I have read on Amazon. My experience has been easy and fun with no playback issues. It's just very important that you update the firmware.
