2.0 out of 5 stars If you're a Mac user consider other options - or see one in person first.
By Graydon on November 10, 2018
Honestly I was excited to see the CJ79 curved Thunderbolt 3 monitor as an option for my new MacBook Pro. I'm a long time Mac user and currently have two of the Thunderbolt 2 monitors on my desk. The option for a 1.5x wide monitor roughly the same height appealed to me despite less screen real estate as there would not be a bezel dividing the screens. I thought the curve would be fine as well. I got my new MBP and realized using my old monitors would require dongles to connect and would not offer charging so this seemed like the best option.

I ordered it and it arrived in a larger box somewhat well packed. No visible damage. Opened it up and it was indeed glorious at first sight. Very light weight as well. The problems started when I unpacked it and carefully removed the plastic protective film from the bezel - the film grabbed so well it removed some of the paint on the bezel. That sucks for a nearly $900 monitor and quite frankly it's unacceptable to have missing bezel paint on day one.

I could have lived with the missing paint perhaps but once connected to the MBP I realized that the image was a bit inferior. The font is pixelated and jagged. Seriously. I'm sure it's a Mac thing but the amount of adjustment and controls is very limited. I do image editing and CAD drawing and it was so noticeable I ended up buying a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 dongle for $49 just to make sure it wasn't the output on my new MBP. It wasn't and honestly my old Mac Thunderbolt 2 monitors look much better than this Samsung.

Be warned this is all plastic and a little bit cheap looking. If you are a Mac user and do graphics or drawings please go see one in person before buying as it more than likely is a step backward as far as image quality especially compared to a Retina laptop screen.

I boxed it up for a return and started that process with Amazon. I will be using my old monitors and will need to purchase a dock with Thunderbolt 2 to 3 ports to make this work well. That sucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Mac Users - If set in Game Mode="Always On"
By SK on January 9, 2020
I've had this monitor for almost a week now and have to say that it is awesome! I am predominantly a Mac user (MacBook Pro 15" 2017) and occasionally use a PC. I mainly use this monitor to do work as a programmer/data scientist.

I was a bit apprehensive about buying this monitor because of the previous reviews saying that the text renders in a pixelated or jagged way on the screen. I will agree that out of the box, text looks awful on this screen. I looked into this a bit more and took one Redditors suggestion to turn off the SAMSUNG MAGIC UPSCALE (https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/7dndff/samsung_cf791_pixelated_text_solved/). This did not resolve the issue. I kept playing around with the settings on the monitor and finally found a solution. Simply change the GAME MODE setting to "Always On". This immediately took care of the pixelated text problem. However, i will say that this screen is not a substitute for the Retina display on the Mac. The Mac screen is still far superior but if you're a programmer like me and need lots of screen space to do work this monitor is fantastic.

After making the change mentioned above, i will reiterate that this monitor is awesome! You get so much real estate. I personally am used to having 4 or 5 windows open and i can easily arrange 6 windows on this screen and be able to quickly toggle back and forth. This is so much better than having two monitors side by side. I also love that the monitor acts as a USB-C/Thunderbolt hub. I can plug in my webcam and peripherals directly into the monitor and just have one Thunderbolt wire to both charge my Mac and connect it to the monitor. This greatly minimizes the number of wires that need to be connected to your MacBook

2.0 out of 5 stars Works for both PC/MAC flawlessly; 100 hz works amazing; speakers are awesome
Reviewed in Canada on August 4, 2020
--- UPDATE: 03/03/2021 ---
Firstly, sometimes, the speakers will not work. So to fix it, you'd have to unplug ALL cables and then reconnect back to magically fix speaker issue. I used a plethora of new and old USB-C cables to confirm if it was the cables – it wasn't.

Aside from the monitor display, the overall construction of the casing is cheap. BOTH bottom edges' paint start to deteriorate and chip off. Not happy, since this was not a result of any physical contact, but rather poor materials that decay overtime. A few years and it starts to decay? Fine. But I haven't had this for that long; I can't recall, but it must've only a year.

How convenient that warranty only lasts for a year...? Of course, customer support wants me to ship it in. I can't live without the monitor for 3 weeks for them to ship it in and back due to work. Disappointed Samsung.

I'd go for another monitor – avoid this one, please.
--- End of update ---

I'm not sure why other reviewers are so critical and harsh about this monitor, when it's actually really great!

Funny story -- this is my second monitor of the same model, since my bookshelf fell on top of it and left a crack; see my 2nd and 3rd pictures for reference of the sad day. Still works! However, after researching other monitors, I've decided to buy the same model and brand, since it has everything I personally needed:
1. VESA mountable
2. USB-C with 85 watts of charging (charges insanely fast) with peripheral connectivity (keyboard/mouse)
3. 100 Hz refresh rate
4. Great speakers
5. High contrast ratio (3:1) compared to the average (1:1) like Acer or LG

First, the VESA mount was a necessity for me, as I dislike the stand. The stand takes up too much valuable desk real estate. However, I'm not deducting a star for this; the deduction is for the terrible mount mechanism for the VESA mount. The product comes with a VESA mount adapter, which causes the monitor to extend/protrude forward by about 2 inches. This presents an issue if you'd like to have the monitor flush with the wall or desk, rather than sticking closer to your face.

Next, the USB-C connectivity is amazing for MAC users. I have a 2019 MBP 16" and it flawlessly connects and powers my laptop with all the peripherals as well. Thunderbolt/USB-C (same thing) cable is included.

Then, the 100 Hz refresh rate makes a huge difference. I'm able to play games, watch movies, and browse with seamlessly smooth interaction. The scrolling and mouse movement experience is a night and day difference between 60 Hz and 100 Hz.

Controversially, the speakers, in my opinion, and great and suitable for my personal needs. I'm not an audiophile, nor does my line of work require exemplary sound quality. They are just clear enough to appreciate movies and music, but the biggest reason why I love them and think they are great is because they can get LOUD. To put in perspective, I currently have it set on VOL 12/100, where 100 is the maximal loudness, and that is already sufficiently loud enough. Imagine if I wanted to have a house party with this monitor? Well, at 100%, I'd imagine it's an air siren by that point.

Lastly, the high contrast ratio allows me to watch movies with dark settings and play games at night without the "darks" being too lit up, if that makes sense. In other words, the blacks/dark colours on your monitor will be true shades of that darkness, rather than being too light. Hence, what contrast is. Since this monitor has a very high contrast ratio compared to other monitors, I chose this one.

However, I wish this monitor display was IPS rather than VA. The colours are washed out slightly, but again, I personally am not affected, as my work doesn't involve high use of colour accuracy. If you are in the creative industry, I'd suggest a 4k IPS monitor, not this Ultrawide -- if you need that extra screen real estate, get TWO 4k monitors instead; make sure you have a strong PC to power those GPU-heavy monitors.

Ultimately, I love this monitor. It looks great, it performs great, and I seriously wish that I could go back in time and take down that wall-mounted bookshelf before it inevitably fell down, because having to shell out an extra ~$1,100 CAD is not fun for anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Are you joking? [UPDATED: still 1 star]
Reviewed in Canada on October 2, 2020
How did a $1000 monitor have something like this slip through quality control?! I can't mount this on my monitor arm because they didn't finish threading the built in plate on the back of the monitor? It took over a month to arrive, and arrived faulty.

UPDATE [still 1 star]:

We replaced the monitor with a new one through Amazon to find that the SAME SCREW HOLE HAS NOT BEEN THREADED. It is impossible to mount this monitor to the mounting plate provided. This is a huge manufacturing default which has affected many monitors. Be cautious if you want to mount this monitor on a monitor arm.
