Product Description
Product Description
Chromebooks are a unique class of mobile computing devices, designed specifically for Web-based tasks. They differ from traditional laptops in a few important ways:
Chromebooks run Web-based apps, not traditional PC applications.
Chromebooks are designed to be connected to the Internet. You can create documents and spreadsheets or edit photos on a Chromebook using Google apps designed for these purposes. The Chrome operating system will not load and run traditional PC software like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. However, files created in these applications can be viewed and edited using Google apps on your Chromebook or cloud-based applications like Microsoft's Office web apps.
You store your files in the Cloud, not on the machine.
To help make them thin and light, Chromebooks are built without large-capacity drives. So instead of storing your documents, videos, and photos on your computer, you save them to Google Drive (Google's Cloud-based storage service). Your files are password-protected and secure, and you can access them anywhere there's an Internet connection. If you know you'll want access to a file or photo offline, however, you can easily save it to the built-in solid-state drive.
The New Samsung Chromebook
For Everyone. The Samsung Chromebook is a new computer that helps you get everyday things done faster and easier. It starts in seconds, has virus protection built-in, and runs your favorite Google apps plus thousands more. The Chromebook comes with leading Google products, like Search, Gmail, YouTube and Hangouts, so you can work, play, and do whatever you want, right out of the box. Chromebooks are a unique class of mobile computing devices designed for Web-based tasks. They run the Google Chrome OS, perfect browsing the Web, sending and receiving e-mail, and video chatting with friends and family. You can easily share it with multiple people- switching accounts takes seconds, and everyone gets their own files, apps and settings. And it's simple to use. There's no setup, and your files are automatically backed up in the cloud. At just 2.4 pounds, 0.7 inches thin, and with over 6.5 hours of battery life, the Samsung Chromebook can go anywhere you go. It's built to stay cool, so it doesn't need a fan and runs silently. It also includes 100GB of free Google Drive storage (for 2 years), a built-in webcam, and dual band Wi-Fi to make it easy to connect to wireless networks.

You can create documents and spreadsheets and edit photos on a Chromebook using Google apps designed for these purposes, but Chromebooks do not run traditional PC software. Instead of storing your documents, videos and photos on your computer, you save them to Google Drive (Google's cloud-based storage service) and you can access them from anywhere there's an Internet connection. Now I've had the Chromebook for a couple of weeks, and I have a few more observations about it. I've gone ahead and given it another star, up to five stars, because, well, it has still been a joy to own.
When last you read me, my MacBook Pro was in the shop because I had worn out the space bar. I lived with the Chromebook exclusively for just one weekend, while house sitting and traveling around, and it did not fail me. Not one bit. I have to admit, it was great to get the Mac back, but I am still using the Chromebook every day in addition to the Mac. They overlap in purpose some of the time, but the ability to multitask with *two* computers has been truly fun for this geeky gal. I was finally able to "let go" of my old HP netbook, too, and give it to another good home. The Chromebook is a VAST improvement over that machine, to the point that I would tell people to consider it over any other type of netbook on the market.
With its lighter weight, the Chromebook is very much easier to haul around with me in my messenger bag. In fact, I have taken it exclusively on a couple of short road trips recently, preferring it for travel to the much heavier Mac. It takes less space for carrying and for setting up, so it's become my top "travel" computer.
Though the specs say it does not have a fan and it stays cool, I can tell you now from experience that the center bottom of the machine, under the numbers and top row of letters, does get warm when watching movies online. However, it has never gotten uncomfortably or dangerously warm, even with hours and hours of streaming Netflix or Amazon Instant Video. Usually, when I feel I am abusing it a bit too much (e.g. I have it sitting on a pillow, tsk tsk!) I will move it to a laptop desk or to a surface that is less heat-reflective. So far, the machine hasn't tried to get back at me for this abuse.
I am loving the convenience of Google Drive. Gone are the days of digging out the thumb drive to transfer files. I just save them to the Drive on either machine and voila, I have files accessible on both. Yay, The Google.
In environments without wireless internet, I have tethered the Chromebook via my very old Android phone and the resident tethering capabilities under Wireless & Network Settings with no problem. When you do open the machine and there's no wireless readily available, it will tell you that apps are not available (including Chrome). I have yet to explore any of the "offline" apps for writing emails etc. that Google provides for the Chromebook. Maybe that'll be this week's exploration.
I do wish the keyboard was backlit. I am a touch typer almost 100% of the time, but often have to look at the keyboard to enter numbers or passwords, so if I am trying to do that in a darker environment, I have to lean the screen toward the keyboard to light it up. That's a hassle I got used to on my old netbook. When I just have to see the keys to write, I simply switch back to the Mac, with its backlit keyboard.
All in all if I only had to have ONE computer, I would prefer the Mac, but like I said, I am using both machines every day at this point, and use them both equally for writing, email, and web browsing. There is a marked difference in certain small things between machines, but overall, the differences are not jarring.
I stand by my original last sentence in my previous version of the review. As a consumer-level user of computers, the Chromebook is still a seamless and user-friendly machine that I would recommend to anyone who is already tied to The Google and doesn't need a CD/DVD drive.

June 29th, 2013
I've only had the Chromebook for less than one day, so I am not quite ready to rate it five stars. I don't know it well enough yet. I ordered it yesterday and it was here within 24 hours with the little bit extra I paid for fast shipping (less than $10). That meant that for me, it's already a lifesaver, as I write a LOT in any given day. My MacBook Pro had to go to the shop yesterday for a broken space bar (at seven months young).
First impressions: It's very light, and it's plastic, so it feels very different from my Mac. The keyboard, however, is a delight, especially compared to a netbook. The layout is big enough to type without feeling cramped, and though the keys feel stiff, they are responsive and easy to touch-type on. There is no back lighting, but as I said, I mostly touch type.
One very funny thing I noticed -- all the letters are lower case. Go ahead. Look at the keyboard you're on right now. Upper case letters, right? Having typed on typewriter and computer keyboards with only upper case letters for over 30 years, I am still getting used to seeing them on my keyboard in lower case. It kinda throws me.
I was able to customize the machine pretty quickly and get apps that I am used to running onto it, including some third-party apps that I use frequently. In the past, I have not used Google Docs or other Cloud services; I look forward to trying what Google has to offer with this machine and potentially synchronizing across both laptops.
Not sure when I will use the twelve free logons with Gogo, as I don't fly often, but the 100GB of Cloud storage for two years seemed like it might come in handy. Thanks, The Google!
I also look forward to carrying this machine around as my "going out" machine in the future. The Mac, while awesome, is a bit of a workout for the shoulder if I have to walk any distance, and is a bit much for general coffee shop type work. It's also going to be nice not flashing the Mac around the college town I live in.
I have tried both Netflix streaming and tethering the machine via my Android phone. Both seemed to work well. I didn't tether for long, but the capability is there via the native wireless settings on my phone (rather than via the third-party Android app I use to tether the Mac). I will experiment with tethering when I am out and about next time -- and then check my bill to see if my provider noticed!
I noticed that the speakers on this machine actually sound way better than the Mac, too. If you use it on your lap (which I know is a no-no) there is a potential of muffling them, as they are up front under the case.
I will try to come back and update if I get anything more specific/technical to say about this machine, or if any of the things I like so far get better or get worse. I'd say all in all, if you really don't need a CD/DVD drive, and spend most of your time online and can stand to write either online or in Google Docs, this could turn your portable world around. Your shoulder will thank you, too!
(Update: 7/31/2013)
(FYI, I am coming from installing and using Ubuntu on this device.)
1) I bought 2 more for my wife and mom (ChromeOS). They both love it. My wife doesn't carry her heavy Dell laptop any more; it stays in her office. This had also replaced her iPad (iPad 3 I think) as the new bed-side multi-media device.
2) After several tries, I finally got to install CERN's ROOT successfully. (Version 5.34.00. Higher versions won't work though) It runs really well. This was awesome, because I no longer had to SSH to my linux desktop machine for accessing ROOT.
3) I use Dropbox for my cloud storage.
4) I compile codes, creates graphes, read pdfs, make power-point (Libre Office) files, do emails, access other servers globally, and etc.
(Seriously, if you are a ubuntu person, you don't need too much storage.)
5) The typing feels slightly choppy. I think this has to do with the ARM-core optimization; after a few days though, I got used to it and it doesn't bother me any longer.
So after more than 7 months of using it, I still love it.
---------------------------------------------------------------
(Update: 2-12-2013)
I hope everyone knows that I am not a complete idiot in saying this is a Quad-core.
I know it is supposed to be a Dual-core. However, when I view the system detail on Ubuntu, it says ?????x4, which means "Quadcore." So I'm not sure which one is right.
But I decided to stick with what my notebook tells me.
Also, it turned out what I installed was Chrubuntu, made specific for chromebooks.
Everything works very well, except for speaker which has an easy fix. (Please, read also the comments.)
---------------------------------------------------------------
It seems this whole thing is very misleading, because this notebook should come as something quite revolutionary, but Samsung does it very quietly, and humbly, by releasing this system with a very cheap pricetag and without any advertisement. Not to stir the water I guess? :)
Anyway, as a satisfied Samsung Series 9(made of duraluminium and expensive with SSD) user, I wrote a review saying "I wished Samsung would make ARM-based notebook" in the past, because even with SSD it came short of being "ideal" package due to it having to cool mechanically the Intel-based chip, which still made fan-noises. Well, 1.5 years later, this is my dream come true; and a quad-core chip at that!! :) This is a revolutionary stuff in computing.
I'm involved in particle physics research, in which vast majority scientists use linux-based systems. So, as soon as I received this chromebook, I brought "Ubuntu Reformation" on it. (No "95-thesis" though.) It does everything I need for my research. It's blazingly fast. A wonderful system for a research guy like me. (There are many wonderful video instructions available on youtube for installing ubuntu.)
There, however, is one thing that didn't work, which most customers could just simply ignore and is not the system's fault. There is a math analysis tool called "ROOT" developed by CERN scientists, and used widely by many particle physicists out there. Well, I wanted to build the ROOT from source code, and it gives me options for "linuxarm" architecture. It compiled successfully, but it just won't run, and freeze at the startup.
I wish someone from Samsung community and from CERN community could sit together and resolve the compatibility issues. This system would do wonders for the CERN scientists, I'm sure.
PROS
1. No moving mechanical parts, such as hard-drives or cooling fans, which means it is absolutely quiet.
(If you are a student, this could be a huge plus in a classroom, because your notebook doesn't make noises like your classmate's, which means your professsors are less annoyed by notebook noises, which could means he/she could give you better grades.:))
2. Screen: Although it seems somewhat "washed-out," I actually like it, because it hardly gives strain on my eyes. It's actually more like glittery washed-out, if you will. (Maybe that's why the system was intentionally designed that way?) For guys like me who have to look it computer monitors all the time, this is very important. How should I say it..., it gives me a clean feeling to look at the screen.
3. Quad-Core Exynos chip: It's a wonder! It makes me think that maybe all the microprocessors are supposed to be made this way from the getgo... maybe its the other articheture brands unable to produce their chips less dissipative, having to require customers to attach huge cooling fans, thereby neccesitating another industry (cooling fans) unneccesarily; only that it asks the customers to pay for their failure. Too much conspiracy theory? O well, if you know anything about solid-state physics, you know it is a major challenge to create a microchip less dissipative of heat. Anyway, one thing for sure, I guess Samsung engineers had figured out how. And it is amazing.
4. Very affordable. Light and slim.
5. No headache due to fan-noises. I might be overly sensitive, but I get headaches from computer fan-noises. Whenever I turn off my other ntebook computers, I instantly feels stability in my soul. It's that bad. So this noebook is also medically - and psychologically - commendable.
5. Solide performance: It feels solid and fast.
6. The temperature gets ony to "warm"-level at times when I watch youtube; otherwise, no heat coming from this notebook.
CONS
1. This is coming from using UBUNTU. You must "unmute" speaker every time you reboot. (To do so, you open the terminal and type "alsamixer" and unmute by pressing "m" at the speaker bar.) But this is no problem for me, because I only reboot once in a full moon.
2. I tried to access this system(UBUNTU, not ChromeOS) through SSH command from my desktop computer, Well, not that it's slow, but it seems a little jerky, not smooth. But if it is the other way around, meaning you access other machine using from this notebook through SSH, then it is no problem. (Maybe still some more compatibility issue to work out?)
3. For ChromeOS, skype doesn't work. But I've read somewhere that they are working on it.
4. I wished there was a microSD slot, instead of a regular SD card slot. Also the SD card sticks out. Maybe they could have made the bay a little deeper.
CONCLUSION: I only write reviews for which I can give 5 stars. So here it is. This chromebook by Samsung is a wonder. Do not be deceived by how Samsung released it with such a cheap pricetag, a "stealth technology" sort in marketing strategy I guess, because this is nothing short of a revolution IMHO.

Youtube、
works half a day without power charger. So convenient!
I like it so much, love the keyboards and touching area.
Cons: However it is recently, youtube cannot work so well...pictures constantly frozen and cannot follow the soundtrack...really sucks.
And because screen is small, words are small...bad for the eyes.
