The reason I'm giving the Gear 3 stars instead of 5 is simply because of the ridiculous lack of other quality content. I waited for over a year to pick up a Gear for this very reason, but little has changed. Other than a few games that barely take advantage of VR capabilities, once the novelty of checking Facebook in VR wears off, there is little to keep one coming back. Most of the VR experiences in the Oculus and Samsung stores are gimmicky and of surprisingly low quality. The internet browser also still does not support functions like watching Amazon video, causing me to switch back to my laptop for most things.
I understand this product isn't a full fledged Oculus Rift, but it's disappointing that we are still at the point where mobile VR is focusing more on demo-type experiences designed to wow people with a new technology than offering much depth. It seems like instead of investing in a smaller number of truly high quality 3D concert eperiences with major celebrities or some well made games (for example), the Gear strategy has been to procure a lot of "meh" offerings that are pretty hit or miss. If you're dying to experience a grainy video that puts you in the center of a Bluegrass jam session with a band you've never heard of, then I guess you're the target audience of this product.
Pros (Compared to Cardboard):
-Main problem with Cardboard was how hot the phones I used with it would get hot-almost uncomfortable to the touch hot-often within about 5 minutes of use.. Probably more of a pro for the S8+ than the Gear VR, but no issues with excessive heat.
-No drift- a well known issue with Cardboard and some phones was that as you watched video or used a VR app, the screen would some times drift off center, so things that at first appeared to be right in front of you would in time appear be to the left or right of you and the only way to fix it would be to restart the video or app. Haven't noticed this problem at all with the Gear VR.
-Availability of content through Samsung/Occulus VR App Store (or whatever it's officially called) better than what's available for Cardboard via Google Play Store.
-Controller works well and easy to set up and figure out.
-Because of the way your phone connects to the Gear VR, there is no way to connect the two while your phone is in a case. I've had other phones where I didn't feel a phone case was necessary, but the S8+ is a big slick chunk of glass that definitely necessitates a case. Having to remove the case and screen protector to use the Gear VR is going to limit how much I use it.
-Better than Google Cardboard, but not significantly different experience overall. They basically fixed some of the things that were annoying about the Cardboard (limited controls and drift) and improved the video quality a bit (which the phone may also play a part).
I don't regret buying it, but I wish I could use it without removing my phone from it's case. If I could, this would get a lot more use.
