This drive comes with data migration software, which is a real plus. It doesn't include the USB to SATA adapter that the installation guide implies that you need, but if you're upgrading a desktop, there's a far better method you can use:
1. Install the data migration software from the CD onto your existing hard drive.
2. Shut down your system.
3. Open the PC's case.
4. Remove the data cable from your SATA optical drive and plug it into the new SSD.
5. Plug a spare power connector into the SSD (you can use the one from the optical drive if necessary).
6. Re-start your system.
7. Shut down everything that starts automatically (you can't migrate open applications).
8. Start the data migration software--it will find the SSD and transfer the files at full speed (a lot faster than using USB).
What was very cool was that I was moving from a 500 GB 2 partition drive to a 750 GB drive. The cloning software was smart enough to divide the extra space between my C and D partitions. HOWEVER, there is a little slider so I could just graphically reallocate the extra space, repartitioning the new drive. That was really nice.
Then I clicked to start the process, went out to dinner. When I got home and it was done.
My Dell Latitude 6510 took a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the 4 tiny screws holding in the old drive. (Keep track of them. I lost one in the carpet.) I was not able to attach the little plastic handle on the new drive because it seemed to prevent the connections from lining up. In retrospect, turning the computer over when sliding in the drive may have taken care of that. LOL The old drive was a little thicker. Within a few minutes I was able to tip up the new drive and it fit. Then I just put those 4 tiny screws back in, booted it up and presto!
My Win7 Ultimate now boots much faster and it's like the 4 year old laptop has new life. I'll be getting more of these for some others in our company. My only issue is that I don't have time to drink coffee while the machine is booting.
One benefit I don't recall seeing mentioned in other reviews is that virus scans of the C drive now take about half as much time as with the HD or SSHD.
I used Reflect to clone the drive rather than the software provided by Samsung, installing the new drive into a USB3 external housing and then switching the two drives. I also activated the Rapid software, which utilizes 1 gb of RAM to further speed things up.
Incidentally, if you're using most or all your RAM already, you may want to add RAM so the 1 gb Rapid takes doesn't slow you down.
I'm totally pleased with this drive on the basis of the about one month I've had it installed.
I wanted to give my laptop a performance boost, so like most other people, the first thing i did was to pop in a new ram slot (1X8GB) along side the 4GB module. I think it helped, but only a little. My applications were still taking long time to load, even my web browser sometimes. I researched around a bit more, and found out a way discover the real "bottleneck" in my computer, which was the disk read/write speeds.
I debated between buying a 7200RPM HDD vs Hybrid VS SSD. Reading the immaculate reviews here, i was swayed! I wanted to try the 750GB hard drive (I initially thought about buying a 250GB SSD with a backup HDD on my laptop but my laptop had only one bay for hard drive).
So, i've decided to go with Samsung EVO 840 750GB HDD!!! The product was delivered earlier than promised (kudos to amazon), and the instructions were very straight forward. I cloned my old HDD to my new SSD, and that took about 1.10 hours (I used the USB3 port and transferred about 250GB of data).. popped in my new ssd into the laptop. bingo.. ~15 seconds boot time, applications start in about 2-3 seconds. system shuts down in about 3 - 4 seconds, Life is good! :)
