I ordered this along with the ZTC Skyboard USB 3 enclosure. Downloaded Samsung's Data Migration tool and off it went. Screaming fast transfer with the Skyboard; the whole thing (128Gb original SSD in Samsung Np9003xb) took less than 30 minutes... could be way less but I was doing other things while it copied.

When it was done, swapped out the drives and my Windows 7 x64 system booted right up! A few things to note:

1. When complete, there is a System partition (100Gb, 93% used -- this is the Windows boot partition), the main C: drive partition (about 447GB) and an 18+GB OEM recovery partition. No hibernation partition.

2. Windows update thinks it has never run; run that if you like.

3. Went into Samsung's Easy Settings tool and turned off Intel Rapid Start (under General); this is needed to recreate the hibernation partition. Reboot needed. Then go back to Easy Settings and turn IRS on; another reboot needed. You will then have a 4.8GB hibernation partition (space taken from C: drive).

4. Also under Easy Settings: adjusted the Speed Boot settings (included MS Security Essentials tool).

That's it. Wow, it is so cool to have 373GB of free space on my C: drive instead of 24GB or so... with VERY little effort. This was the simplest "drive upgrade" I've ever performed; the fastest too!

Well done Samsung!!

Would have been five stars save for 2 disappointments:
1) it didn't come with a screw, so I salvaged one from my graphics card :D
2) Lenovo Energy Management for Win7 64-bit gives it a BSOD for some reason, despite it being completely fine on my HDD

Otherwise this thing is a beast. From off to fully productive in just under 30 seconds. I was using a 5400rpm HDD and it would take me at least 6 minutes or so.

It runs pretty cool too, lowering my laptop's highest temperatures by about 10 degrees Celsius (I have a Y500 dual-gpu gaming laptop). With optimizations, I'm getting ~1k seq read/writes, 55k random read, 63k random writes. In comparison, my HDD has 20 for seq and 140 for random. WOOT!! :D

This review is for the 1TB version of the 840 EVO mSATA. This drive represents a great combination of capacity, speed and cost, an excellent and perhaps your only choice if you need the 1TB size in an mSATA format.

I've owned many SSDs over recent years, using them both as primary drives in laptops and desktops, as well as a few for archive storage. Up to now, all have been in the 2.5" form factor. But, with a recent laptop upgrade to an HP 810 Revolve, I had to move to the mSATA format that the 810 requires. This led me to the 840 EVO mSATA. On my previous laptop, an HP 2760p, I had been using Crucial M500's in the 960GB size and the 2.5", so I can compare the two experiences with these TB class SSD's pretty directly.

Pro's
+Only TB class SSD in mSATA format at this moment. Outstanding value given size and speed!
+Fast in the absolute, very comparable to m500 (see benchmarks, below).
+mSATA format means you can use this in the ultra compact laptops and tablets that will only take mSATA.
+Samsung has a good reputation for speed and reliability.
+Samsung FINALLY supports the OPAL standards for hardware-based full drive encryption, and this works seamlessly with SecureDoc and Windows 7, meaning you get the benefits of a fully encrypted drive with NO speed penalty like you would incur with software-based encryption.

Cons
-Write life is going down as NAND sizes shrink, but this is true with all the latest SSDs. Eminently usable as a laptop drive under normal write loads with a 5year + life.

Drive Encryption

I only use drives that support FDE via HARDWARE these days. This allows me to get the maximum performance of which the hardware is capable while also providing very robust data security.

This is the second drive with which I've used WinMagic's SecureDoc Stand-Alone edition to implement a higher level of data security on this drive, and it works great!

I've since backed off of SecureDoc and implemented the ATA password approach (which you set through your computer's BIOS). This has now been recommended by Samsung, along with greater clarity about the *extent* to which they support OPAL. Net is that I had some issues over time with the SecureDoc software and the EVO 840, which I suspect was due to lack of full OPAL support. Samsung's explicit recommendation of the ATA password got me thinking that perhaps this is really a pretty secure approach with a modern SSD, as the ATA Pasword attacks are well known by now, and a manufacturer could implement improvements to prevent the ATA password attacks from being successful. While I cannot CONFIRM that Samsung has done this, I decided to go back to ATA password for simplicity and reliability. This approach was further validated for me when I tried to un-encrypt the EVO 840 using SecureDoc. Could not do so. Samsung Magician will not secure erase an OPAL protected drive. Solution was to do a PSID reset using Samsung's PSID Reset software with the EVO 840 in an mSATA to 2.5" SATA adapter, then connected to a SATA connection on desktop. Whew! Got the EVO back to factory condition, now using with ATA password.

Constrained by the current max 1TB SSD size for your laptop? Or just want bragging rights? This Dual mSATA to 2.5 SATA will do the trick Micro SATA Cables - 2.5 Inch SATA Motherboard to Dual Mini PCI-e MSATA SSD Raid Card!

Discovered that there are a number of dual mSATA to 2.5 inch SATA converter boards out there. Tried three dual mSATA boards in combination with 2x Samsung 840 EVO 1TB mSATA SSDs, and this is the only board I could get to work.

Setup was simple.

*Set DIP switch for desired mode (RAID 1, RAID0, JBOD, Span), in my case RAID 0. You'll need a small pin or similar object to set these TINY switches.
*Use included screws and nuts to attached mSATA boards. Has mounting holes for 25mm, 50mm and one longer option. Evo 840's are 50mm.
*Clone current HD to new dual mSATA drive. In my case, I did this outside the laptop using Acronis TrueImage 2014 and both drives connected to my desktop via USB3 SATA adapters [Optimized For SSD, Support UASP SATA III] Inateck 2.5 Inch USB 3.0 Hard Drive Disk HDD External Enclosure Case with usb 3.0 Cable for 9.5mm 7mm 2.5" SATA HDD and SSD, Tool-free HDD Installation, Compatible With Windows 2000/ XP /Vista/ 7/ 8, Mac OS 9.1...
*Install dual mSATA in laptop. I did mod my laptop bottom cover with some holes for air flow, as I noticed that the dual mSATA seemed to run hotter than my 2.5 Crucial M500.

Everything is running fine so far!

Pros
+ Works! Provides 2TB class SSD in form factor of 2.5inch SATA drive! Only game in town if you need the space!
+ Easy setup, with DIP switch for choosing mode (unlike some other options that use jumpers)
+ Includes all the hardware you need to mount the mSATA boards.
+ 7mm thickness = works with many more laptops.

Cons (minus 1 star total)
- SATAII throughput limits max speed of modern SSDs (300MBps is theoretical limit of SATAII, which is under my own max speed results for the EVO 840 mSATA alone)
- RAID processing also pulls down speed to some extent.
- Runs hotter than 2.5inch SSD

Net, though, is worth it if you need the space!

Benchmarks using Crystal DiskMark on HP Elitebook 2760p.

As you can see, the max speeds take a hit vs. Crucial M500 and vs. a single 840 EVO in a different laptop. Again, I suspect that both the SATAII circuitry on the board AND the JMicron RAID chipset are combining to limit speed to some extent. Still, laptop is extremely responsive, and my large file transfers are still MUCH faster than with a mechanical drive, so a worthwhile tradeoff for the space.

Cloning Drive to Evo 840 mSATA

There are many approaches to cloning a drive, but here is the one I used. I had the original HP-supplied 256 GB mSATA already running Win7 in the 810 Revolve laptop.

Software: Acronis TrueImage 2014
Hardware: mSATA USB 3.0 adapter

*Mount 840 Evo mSATA to mSATA/USB3 adapter
*Plug in to USB3 port on laptop
*Select Clone Disk in TrueImage, pointing to current drive as source and Evo 840 as destination. Note that there was no need to format the Evo 840, Acronis works with the bare drive as is.
*Acronis does it's thing, cloning the current C: drive to the Evo 840.
*Then open laptop, replacing the old mSATA drive with the Evo 840
*Reboot, let Acronis finish, and off we go! Some software complained about needing to be registered again, but just took care of that with each program as it came up.

Net, highly recommend the Evo 840 mSATA 1TB if you need the biggest, badest SSD for your ultra portable laptop or tablet.

One of the features advertised with this as compared to the earlier series was the ability to support hardware based encryption including eDrive which is found in Windows 8. I found that the statement is not entirely accurate for this drive especially the mSATA version.
The drive by default comes with eDrive Disabled and unless you are using this as a secondary drive to another disk which is the boot drive, installing OS on this disables the eDrive feature almost permanently. To activate e-Drive this needs to be enabled using Samsung Magician and then in case the disk is already initialized (like installing the OS) the only way to re-enable it would be to Secure Erase the drive. Samsung magician comes with an utility to secure erase which creates a boot disk/usb. Trying to secure erase using this method is never successful as the BIOS as part of the initialization sequence puts the drive in a frozen state. The recommended method of Samsung in this case is to unplug the power cable to the drive which is not possible since this is an mSATA configuration. Since the mSATA port is also not hot plug capable the drive cannot be secure erased. The solution of parted magic to put computer to sleep also does not work with mSATA.
