What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

First and foremost, THIS EXACT MODEL (SM-G920TZKAXAR) IS THE ONLY FACTORY CERTIFIED UNLOCKED GALAXY S6 WITH U.S. WARRANTY THAT SAMSUNG OFFERS! Don't believe it? Check Samsung's own website. In fact, this is the only factory certified unlocked Galaxy that Samsung offers at all in the US market, and only in the 32GB version, NO OTHER COLOR, NO OTHER SIZE MEMORY, NO OTHER ANYTHING. If you purchased ANY other model it is NOT Samsung certified unlocked, you will probably not be able to register it or have the warranty, no matter what the seller may claim! Amazon may "fulfill" other models, but they are being sold by a third party.
Now, for the model #s, what they mean, and who they work with. Don't trust the descriptions provided by the 3rd party sellers. If it says "sold by _____ and fulfilled by Amazon" it's a 3rd party seller. Only if it says "Ships from and sold by Amazon" is it really sold by Amazon:
This model I am reviewing will work on any carrier who utilizes GSM technology and towers. This means T-mobile, AT&T, and any other independent carrier piggybacking off these GSM towers. It will work with Straight Talk wireless, but you MUST purchase the GSM SIM card kit, NOT the CDMA version. If you purchase the right SIM card from Straight Talk, it will work fine, as they piggyback off all towers and the towers your phone will use just depends on which type phone and technology you have. This model will NOT work with Verizon or Sprint, they utilize CDMA technology and towers. I don't know why people are slamming this phone for this as it clearly states this in the description. Buyers need to check with the carrier they want to use (if not using one of the big 4) and find out which towers they will be utilizing before making a phone purchase. To do otherwise is irresponsible on the part of the buyer, and not the phone or the carrier's fault. Stop blaming them!
The locked version of this model is optimized for use with T-mobile (hence the T after the SM-G920 in the model number). If you purchase a model that starts with SM-G920A, that phone is optimized for use with AT&T and is NOT a factory certified unlocked phone and will not have the US warranty. It will be sold by a 3rd party. If your phone model has a "V" after the 920 in the model, it is CDMA and optimized for use on Verizon. It will not have the US factory warranty and will be sold by a 3rd party. If your model has a "P" after the 920 it is CDMA and optimized for use on Sprint, no warranty, sold by 3rd party. US Cellular optimized phones will have an "R", no warranty, sold by 3rd party. With an "I" means international, never meant for US market, no warranty, sold by 3rd party. Get the idea??? Don't believe it? CHECK SAMSUNG'S WEBSITE!
I for one did my homework, made sure I got a true certified factory unlocked phone with US warranty (sold by and fulfilled by Amazon), and knew which carrier I wanted to use. I personally wanted T-mobile as they have numerous no contract plans to choose from, excellent customer service and brick and mortar stores you can walk right into for help, so this was a perfect match. I purchased this phone along with the wireless charger, and bought the correct T-mobile SIM card. It all arrived in perfect condition, sealed package, clearly brand new and never opened.
Rather than attempt to activate this phone myself or do it over the phone with a rep., I simply took everything right to my local T-mobile store and asked them to do it for me. The phone I was using was nearly 4 years old, an antiquated model and I wanted to port my old number, all my contacts, photos, etc., from my old phone to the new one. The SIM card from the old phone was also not compatible with this new one. They were completely different sizes. I was out the door in literally less than 10 minutes with a perfectly functioning phone and every single file, photo and bit of data I wanted to keep right there on the new phone (they transferred everything through cyberspace). They were only too happy to accomodate me, because after all, I will be on their network and paying for their service. They told me I didn't even need to have purchased the SIM card, they would have given it to me for free because, again, their network, their service, their revenue. Once activated, I had it registered on the Samsung website and warranty activated within 5 more minutes, right from my new phone while sitting in the car in the T-mobile parking lot. They would have probably even done that for me had I asked. Will every carrier do that for you? Probably not, that's why you should check with the carrier you want to use before doing the BYOP (bring your own phone) thing.
I did everything right, and I have a flawlessly performing phone that will do things I could only previously imagine. The transition was not only painless, but downright pleasant. I could not be happier. Since activating the phone I have loaded Microsoft Office, Samsung Pay, Square Register and numerous other apps, and still flawless performance. You need to understand that when you want the most advanced technology and you want to use your phone to do all the "newest" things, there may be bugs from time to time. Most of the bugs are in the apps themselves, not just Samsung's apps, but everybody's apps. Just uninstall them already! Reinstall them when they become more stable. Sometimes when a brand new app does a huge update, your version may hang up. Uninstall it and reinstall the updated (fixed the bugs) version. It really is simple as that people.
Does the phone come with some useless stuff? Sure it does, don't they all? Just go in and disable them. Don't know how? It would behoove you to download the user manual, free from Samsung. You will find all kinds of great things this phone will do within those pages. I've had this phone for several weeks and I'm still finding amazing things this phone will do.
Pros: Blazing fast processor, fabulous camera, good battery life if you take the time to optimize your settings. Crystal clear display, loads of features, lots of available accessories. Will run numerous apps at once with no detectable slow down. Connects to wi-fi flawlessly, both at home and when out using others. Stays connected, does not drop. Syncs flawlessly with other products. Wireless charger works like a dream, even though a protective case. No problems with fingerprint reader or touch screen, etc., etc., etc. There isn't enough time to list them all.
Cons: I didn't buy it sooner. I could have been enjoying it earlier. As for the phone, none that I've seen yet.
Finally...no, I do not work for either Samsung or T-mobile.
After having the S6 for 7 months, when the manufacturer's warranty was still active, the phone's screen started turning colors when plugged into my computer, and, over the course of a couple of hours, stopped working. (I had struggled to turn it on once before but thought it was a battery problem, which didn't seem to be the case when I got it on and there was still lots of battery life.) "Have you ever dealt with Samsung?" someone asked as I mentioned that I'd have to send in my phone for repairs. I had kept the phone in a $50 waterproof case and been careful with it, since I had previously endured the embarrassment of a cracked iPhone screen for over a year.
Yet, after I sent it to in, Samsung claimed the phone wouldn't turn on due to damage to the LCD "beneath the screen"; i.e., even though the screen looked immaculate, it was broken, and they determined it was my fault. They tried to charge me more than $160 to replace the LCD screen, after which they said they couldn't be sure I wouldn't have more charges after they were able to turn on the phone.
Contrast this experience with the time I actually *did* drop my iPhone 4S and horribly cracked the screen; yet, it still worked. After covering it with a screen protector, it worked perfectly for more than a year when I bought the S6.
I decided to start using my 4S until I bought an iPhone 5S off of Craigslist. (Be careful with Craigslist purchases; make sure the seller will meet you in a phone store where they can check that it wasn't stolen.) My iPhone 5S works great. Again, now I understand why people say, "Once you go Mac..." This unfortunate experience confirmed for me what so many people have been telling me for years: Apple products just seem more durable.
I bought this phone new, its been just over 6 months now and it is not recharging.
first trouble: unable to launch any apps . Error out with message :" unable to open since phone is running overheated"
We tried removing cache, any apps that are draining battery, then we tried soft reset, then we tried hard reset and got stuck with a red triangle with exclamation mark. Meanwhile, the phone was not charging.
And now when we plug it in, we get error message" Phone not charging since phone is running overheated"
I end up getting tossed between between Amazon and Samsung customer care. Not sure what to do
Update :Amazon has a great customer service and shipped a replacement, however, replacement device has a dent on metal band next to charging port. What an unlucky day.
Home button already has scratches in it from a few weeks of use, screen is perfect, phone is inside otter box. The gorilla glass is not suppose to scratch easily but samsung doesn't mention what's home button is made of, but it looks like it's definitely not gorilla glass or may be device is faulty. The accuracy of finger print sensor has degraded as well.
In comparison, almost three years old sg4 has just like new home button.
