The watch itself was a little larger than I expected. I had read the dimensions online. However not having seen it in person and in relation to my wrist which is quite small ( I am a petite) so my family was a little stunned when I pulled it out of the box.
They sighed with relief when I shoed them it was in its charging cradle and it wasn't that large all the time. It is still a tiny bit large compared to a regular woman's watch or some of the smaller pedometer only smart watches. However with the streamlined design and rosegold accents the Galaxy gear manages not to look like a clunky technical piece of equipment or a sports watch. It blends in with my clothing for work nicely which is what I was looking for.
I had a little trouble figuring out how to set it up. Since it came with no manual. The watch had a set up "guide" on the screen. However after a visit to the play store to get "gear manager" and turning on the NFC, everything just fired right up!
I messed with it a bit and figuring out what screen does what has been pretty simple.
The watch is a great blend of doing a lot and doing it simply!
It has many features; pedometer, camera, timer, music player, phone, receive messages, send messages by voice or pre written such as "call me," record memo, and others I can't think of right now.
They are easy to use and acess and unobtrusive, no one really realizes they are on your watch!
One of the neatest things about it was something my husband thought was initially its weakness. He pointed out that it would need to be charged every 12 hours (give or take.) I shrugged and said that was fine I couldn't wear it while I was asleep anyway. So I put the watch in its chaging cradle next to the bed. This solved a problem I had with only having the phone next to my bed at night, it gave me a second clock. But I'd still have to push a button to wake it up right?
WRONG! I wave my hand and the watch wakes up! And the display comes on so I can read the time!
I can find only one down fall so far. I bought this watch because I have a job that does not allow me to have a cell phone on at work during the day. They would prefer I have it off or on silent and in my bag in the break room. This watch was the solution. I can still get my messages discreetly and know if anything is important. However this does not allow me to do that and leave it in my bag. I still need to have it in my pocket. But as long as it is silent I can do that.
Overall I am very pleased all around.
To use the watch you have to have an app installed on your phone called Gear Manager. This app is a prompted download when you touch the watch cradle to the back of your phone using NFC. It is the main app on your phone that allows you to control the watch in terms of making changes to settings and adding Samsung apps from the samsung market designed just for the watch. Apps are being added to the market regularly and as the watch becomes more known and used, more apps will become available to make it even better. I used a Samsung app (Watch Styler) to modify the watch face with a picture on my phone and customized its time, date, battery style, font, size, color and location on the face. Really cool app!
Im using the watch with my Galaxy Note 2. I have made and answered about 1 dozen calls just this past weekend flawlessy as well as read texts and then responded via S-voice response, again working perfectly.
There are numerous setting controls on the watch that allow you to set the brightness, volume, display, motions, bluetooth, privacy and change the clock style. You get your full contact list where you can choose to text or call by swiping left or right, just as on your Samsung phone. Great to have a fully functional touchscreen watch. There are a few quik gestures from the clock/face that allow you to get right to your camera/video or the phone dialer really fast. There are also some two finger gestures that allow you to get to important places fast such as holding 2 fingers on the screen that brings up all your previous apps to quikly get back to them or double tapping with two fingers to see battery amount and toggle volume or brightness for quik changes.
I did opt to install ADB on my computer so I could sideload some phone apps (non internet apps). It was a fairly easy process for me and allowed me to run an app uninstaller (to uninstall these external apps), pac-man and tetris. These are all really small file sized so I knew I wouldnt work the memory. The apps show up in the app drawer just as they would on your phone and along with the stock apps, really cool looking and add to the show-off factor when showing people your watch. I even sideloaded one of the gun sound and car sound apps that allow "set sound as ringtone" within the app. After opening the apps I could click the "set as ringtone" and the sounds I chose from these apps (ak-47) and (corvette) are now under my options for ringtones and notifications within the stock menu. There is really going to be so much more to this watch than what people have seen so far. Even with the capability of doing things that arent available right now in stock form, Im going to stick it out and see what not only Samsung has in this watches future but what other developers will bring.
Bottom line: Its new, its cool, it looks and works great and I would recommend it to everyone. Those days of watching Dick Tracey and James Bond talk on thier watches are a thing of the past....so are you still living in the past or getting onboard with the future?
