~ Movies 3/5 stars~
I bought this player mainly for movies on the go. The big screen is great and pixel count is still very high. The problem is buying movies and tv shows is hard to do. This is where the Android market gets 1 star out of 5 for movies. Yes, you can rent a movie (no tv shows though) from the Android marketplace, but it is stupid because you have to stream them. You cannot download and save for a road trip or plane flight, or whatever. You have to be connected to a wi-fi signal to watch your rental. Which does not work for me. What is the point in having a portable media player if you cannot watch your movies on the go? Android can and should fix this by allowing you to download the rental just like the i-tunes store, psp store, and many other stores do. Many people knock i-tunes. I say they do it right. They have movies, books, lots of games, apps, and music readily availible to sync to your player. The problem with Apple is the don't have a 5" screen size pmp.
I found a couple places you can actually buy Divx movies and download them but they are pricey (about 15$)just go to Divx.com, their selection is low and their are no tv shows.
I have read a lot of reviews on the 5.0 and people have said that this device accepts just about all their personal music and movie files. Don't be decieved by this statement like I was. They have to be DRM free and/or unprotected.Read more ›
Edit: I also noticed that the original price on this third party retailer shows $299. Im not sure where they got that starting price point from. To support my statement above even further they cross out the $299 starting price point and show $265.95 to make it look cheaper. The real price for the SGP 5.0 is $269 and SGP 4.0 is $229 respectively. Don't be fooled.
Edit #2: Third party retailers have lowered the price even more now to $240 hoping that a uninformed person would purchase the product thinking it was the US SGP or even the Korean SGP with all the extra features. But don't be fooled the third party retailers know that the US SGP 4.0 and 5.0 is now available at amazon and best buy so they are trying to get rid of their imported SGP's stock as soon as possible. I expect the price to be lowered to fire sale prices soon if no one purchases the product.
The Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 has, as the name would suggest, a 5.0 inch diagonal screen. This is much larger than most phones and other touch screen devices that you may have(other than, of course, a tablet). Before you buy the unit, you will want to try out how a 5 inch device will feel in your hands. A good unit to try something like this out on would be a Dell Streak(if you know someone with that particular device). The screen is 800x480 in pixel resolution, and very responsive. It is also a capacitive touch screen, and therefore, does support multi-touch gestures. Compared to similar Android PMP's(Personal Media Players), the Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 has an excellent screen.
When you first turn on the device, there wont be any calibration. This is because the PMP comes pre-calibrated. Also, you will have to have a google account, but that will not be a huge issue for most people. It comes with both the Google Marketplace, and Samsung's own App Store. Beyond that, Samsung hasn't installed many apps. There's Qik for video calling, as well as Think Free Office(for sharing of documents). Note that the device doesn't come with Flash pre-installed, but can run flash if you go out and download it from the market place.
The CPU is very fast.Read more ›
