Samsung HDTV Adapter (MHL 3.0)
From Your Smartphone to Your TV
Enjoy high-definition video from your MHL-enabled Samsung device with the Samsung Micro USB-to-HDMI adapter cable that connects your MHL 3.0 (or earlier version) enabled smartphone to a high-definition TV or computer monitor to support signals up to Ultra-HD 4K resolution.
With the Samsung MHL 3.0 Micro USB to HDMI Adapter, you can watch movies, view pictures, and listen to music from your smartphone or tablet on your television or monitor. Simply plug your HDMI cable into the MHL 3.0 Micro USB-to-HDMI Adapter (female), and the Micro USB (male) into your phone and you're ready to go.
Supports 4K Video Output
The HDTV Adapter (11 pin HDMI) supports Ultra-HD signals up to 4K resolution over Micro USB. Connect directly to your MHL-enabled mobile phone with an 11-pin Micro USB input to create an HDMI docking station. Then, connect a standard HDMI cable for easy connectivity to home theater or monitor. MHL 3.0 supports up to 4K UHD (2160p, 30fps)--requires both the MHL 3.0 HDTV Adapter and a Samsung MHL 3.0-enabled smartphone to achieve 4K UHD resolution. If an MHL 2.0 enabled tablet/phone is used with the MHL 3.0 adapter, resolution would be up to 1080p. Similarly, if an MHL 2.0 adapter is used with an MHL 3.0-enabled tablet/phone, resolution would also be up to 1080p.
In order to function with MHL 1.0 enabled phones, the adapter also needs to be connected to a power source via the Micro USB port on the adapter itself. With a smartphone supporting MHL 2.0 or later, the adapter does not need to be plugged in to a separate power source. (HDMI Cable and Micro USB Travel Charger sold separately)

i didn't give it a 5 bcause i wish it was at least 10 dollars cheaper... (around 30... instead of 40 on Amazon. though better than straight from Samsung at 50.)
my tv is about 5 years old and is not a smart tv, but I wanted to be able to use features similar to "screen mirroring" like I have on my cellphone (and I couldn't because my phone (galaxy note 3) is newer than the tv. the tv only had "allshare" on it). I even chatted with a Samsung representative and he never once suggested this item or anything similar, which I think is sort of odd, considering this IS a Samsung product.
at first I was a little skeptical/disappointed that I couldn't find a way to link my phone to my tv wirelessly, but the more I thought about it, the more it really didn't matter. when I wirelessly sync to my OTHER tv (which IS a smart tv) it has to remain stationary anyway so that I can keep it plugged in. see, the phone screen cannot blackout or else the tv won't display what you're streaming anymore. and also, you can't just play videos in the background while you do other things (it must be the main/only thing you're doing at the time). So really, what difference does it make if it's wired directly to the tv via HDMI or whether it's "wireless" and still in the exact same boat anyway?
so yes, this is a perfect solution to my need for connecting my phone to my tv! :)
Replace my cheap Cirago HML adapter, because have issue with my video feeds and won't charge my Note Edge even when AppRadio off.
*NOTE* WILL NOT work on newer Samsung phones, such as the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and Note 5. These newer phone does not have HML capability, only wireless mirroring.
My Note 5 stopped working; so, I could either upgrade immediately at no cost or wait for another Note 4 replacement to become available. The Sprint salesman assured me that my MHL 2.0 would work with my new Note 5. It did not.
When I explain the issue to a Best Buy salesman, he said that the MHL 3.0 would work. Again - disappointed.
I am regretting my decision to upgrade from a Note 4 to a Note 5. The MHL adapter works great - when you have a compatible phone. I have read a few Android posts; so my next try will be an Amazon fire stick.
Note, however, that (most notably, for Samsung phones) this is USELESS today. Samsung stopped providing the MHL interface with the Galaxy S5, so the S6 and now S7 CANNOT USE THIS DEVICE.
The MHL connectivity standard provides a port which is SIMILAR TO, but is not, a "micro-USB" port. You can plug a micro-USB cable into an MHL port, but you can also plug other devices into it, which connect to different pin connections.
If, for example, you have a Samsung Galaxy S7, and attempt to plug an MHL cable (like this device has) in... you'll discover that there are additional pins in the connector (harness-side) which interfere with features in a standard micro-USB port. Attempt to force it in, and not only is that not going to give you a "connection" but you'll also damage both the phone and the cable.
Here's a nice view of the difference between the two. Note that these are both Samsung accessories intended for the Galaxy series phones.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7, as well as most other newer Samsung devices, no longer support MHL, and thus cannot use this device. They've been pushing their "wireless interface" (which mainly works with Samsung TVs, though newer Roku devices seem to work fine as well!) instead of the hard-wired approach (which I prefer).
