I've been using this product since December 2011. As of now, the product has worked flawlessly.
The good: This gives you the ability to take your phone, and display it on an HD TV. If you want to get especially creative, buy a Bluetooth keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. This will allow the phone to sit across the room and you can use it as a make-shift computer.
The bad: Not necessarily bad, but it does require a micro USB power cable to be plugged into the MHL adapter. This is because HD out on a cell phone requires so much power. If your phone is low on power, you will notice that, with the MHL adapter plugged in, with the micro USB power plugged in, the phone still might not charge, but instead, remain stagnant.
I even used it on my Galaxy Nexus when visiting family to stream movies and TV shows in 720p from my home PC to their HDTV with the app Plex.
You do need an HDMI cable to connect it to the TV or receiver, and It does also need power from a standard micro-usb power adapter (I've never tried it with anything offering less than 1 amp). I've heard some TVs and accessories are starting to offer power over HDMI for MHL stuff like this, so this may not be the case for you depending on the equipment.
So I went ahead and purchased the official MHL adapter hoping to overcome this issue. It did not. Same slowly dying that I get with the Menotek adapter.
Not only did this not product improve over the 3rd party. There is another possible major problem with it. That is when the adapter is set near you home theater equipment it get's interferece and the screen will flash and turn black for a split secong. Sometimes every few seconds sometimes longer in between.
If you have a long hdmi cord and move the phone away from everything it works though.
I thought about giving the product 2 stars but I'm giving this a 3 stars because it does work assuming you can find a place that doesn't have interferance. For me that was 5 feet away.
Again I should have just stuck with the Menotek adapter. I gave that adapter 4 stars even with the charging issue and I belive it costs less as well. Attached is the link to that product.
Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter IMPROVED WITH RCP (Remote Control Protocol) for Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Evo 3D, HTC Evo 4G Tablet, HTC Sensation 4G, Sprint Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy Nexus
I originally was surprised to see 20 pixels of margin missing on the TV - but I learned this was because of overscan.
The cable works, so I won't remove any stars. However, what I'm really looking for is a cable that allows me to plug in USB devices _and_ hook it up to a TV. Like this:
S3 or Note 2 -> cable splitter -> cable 1: USB, cable 2: HDMI
This way I can plug in a USB hub for keyboards, mice, flash storage, etc.
While using my Samsung charger & cable connected to an LG lcd TV, it works very well with my LTE Galaxy Nexus.
However, I had trouble getting this to work with my two Dell PC monitors or non-Samsung charging cables (I'm not 100% which was causing the video cut-outs), so I don't recommend this if you're hoping to hook it up to a monitor instead of a TV.
