I'm a software engineer and seem to upgrade to a new laptop just about every year. My last two laptops were Samsungs and they were great, so I decided to go with Samsung yet again.

Everyone about this laptop on paper is great, except for the hard drive. The first thing I did when I got it was replace the HDD with a 512GB Samsung SSD, and boy did that speed things up.

I've loved this laptop the entire 3 months I've owned it so far, until about last week when I started noticing issues with the screen that are now seriously bugging me. When I first got it, I thought the screen was noticeably brighter and more vibrant than my MacBook Pro. Comparing the two now, that is no longer the case. Even worse, there is now a considerable amount of burn-in that is painfully obvious when dark colors. I have no idea what caused the burn-in since the screen is set to turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity, and I always put the lid down when I walk away.

This is a real bummer since I'm fairly sure I voided the warranty by putting in the new SSD.

I picked mine up at Best Buy in September 2013 for $1100. Just the other day I saw that they are now selling the same model for $1200, and Amazon has it for over $1300! Not sure why the price seems to be going UP instead of DOWN.

My advice: There are better laptops coming out every single day, so you might be better off picking up something newer (and probably cheaper), such as the Lenova Y series or something else similarly spec'd.

I was able to get this laptop refurbished at $850 when you can get it from Samsung for $1,200 which is already a deal. If you do that though you will have to download and update some drivers out of the box or at least I had to.
Pro’s
• AMD Radeon Graphics + Intel HD graphics – not bad for games
o It can handle Star Wars The Old Republic at almost Max graphics
o Guild Wars 2 is a little choppy at maximum graphics but if you tune shadows down a bit it’s smooth.
o Skyrim is very smooth at max graphics.
o All in all not a bad gaming laptop with the AMD chip
• I run some virtual machines on it and the 8GB of memory has no problems.
o Should note that there is an empty slot that can take another 8GB of RAM 16000MHz
o Very easy to install more memory just one screw is all it takes
• Beautiful Display
o The touch screen is 10 finger touch and is very responsive. Just as good as an iPad IMO.
o 15.6 inch display 1920x1080
• Long Battery Life.
o I am a college student going into IT so I am on my computer all day
o Currently I am seeing about 10 or more hours of basic use at high performance.
• Slim Design.
• 4 USB 2 of which are 3.0
• 1 TB HD

Con’s
• The screen is pretty glossy so reflections can be a bit annoying but you get used to it. I hardly notice it now.
• If you’re playing games it does get a bit warm on the screen since the fans blow all the heat at the base of the screen. I was able to get a cool mat and it has made a big difference by elevating it and providing additional air flow with a fan.
• No CD drive. Not a big deal to me but to others it can be a deal breaker.
• The HD is 5400 rpm’s which is slow for a performance laptop like this
All in all I love this laptop.

I have owned this laptop for almost two months now. I have had chronic problems w/ the display dim control and the touchpad. It seems that Samsung has yet to release drivers that work properly w/ Windows 8.1. The constant problems w/ both the screen brightness (goes really dim for no reason) and the touchpad randomly going into select mode makes it very, very frustrating to use. I have played w/ every possible setting for both the Touchpad and the display, and have spent time w/ Samsung support. Their only answer is that I have to wait for new drivers. I keep waiting.

I spent $1400 on this laptop, and I am ready to throw it out the window. I have never been so dissatisfied w/ a new computer.

This was everything I was looking for in a laptop. Its been in steady used for about two years and is rarely turned off. I love the touch screen and keep trying to use my finger on non touch screens since I have picked up the habit on this laptop. I am writing this review with it right now.

I upgraded the wifi card to 802.11ac and also upgraded the hard drive to a 1gb Samsung SSD.

The GPU can run most games at 1920x1080 at full speed and high graphics. Some more intensive games require turning the graphics down to medium. Most of the time turning off shadows is all that is required to run at full speed.

It is thin, light, and when not playing games, the battery last all day.

Again, it is everything I was looking for in a laptop.

After buying the laptop from a Microsoft shop, I used it without a problem for three months. And then, as I was opening the laptop's lid one day, the screen's housing came apart. A cursory inspection revealed the cause. Samsung used glue to secure the laptop's hinge to the screen's outer metal casing. After opening and closing the laptop's lid a number of times (over the course of 3 months), the glue gradually weakened and finally gave in. I am deeply disappointed at Samsung. They surely could have designed a better product.
