Top customer reviews
Some people griped about an external viewfinder (EVF) not being available. This may be a downside for those trying to squeeze as much battery life as they can, but I don't often take pictures for extended periods. Therefore, it does not bother me so much. The lack of EVF also helps to cut down on size. To aid with battery life, the display is set to turn off after 30 seconds of no use. One can turn the display back on by hitting the button on top as if you were going to take a picture.
The two main features that make the NX300M different from the regular NX300 are the 180-degree flippable display and the Tizen OS, which is open-source. The flexible display makes this camera ideal for "selfies." This may seem silly to some folks, but Samsung is a South Korean company, and that country is very much into selfies. The other reason for a flexible display is to help with shooting at awkward angles. The open-source OS allows developers to customize the software a little bit. There are a few "hacks" one can perform on the camera. Options seem rather limited, but they're there...
The reason to get this over the NX3000 is that it has a higher resolution screen that's also a touchscreen. For a camera that doesn't have an EVF, I wouldn't settle for a watered down screen. If you're so strapped on cash that you need to cut corners to this extent, you might want to consider hold off on buying a camera in the first place.
That brings me to my next point. If you're really into photography, you'll buy different lenses. That's the real reason to get a Samsung camera: their lenses are nice. At the bare minimum, I recommend getting the 30mm NX Pancake lens for portability. It just barely manages to fit into a pants pocket when connected to the NX300M and definitely fits into a bigger coat pocket. Another option is keeping the lens and camera apart in your pocket and then putting them together when you want to take pictures. The 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera is good for general use, but it lacks the portability of the smaller lenses and the power of the bigger lenses. If I decide to take photography more seriously, I might get something like the 16-50mm or 50-200mm lenses.
Along with buying different lenses, getting the most out of this camera also requires messing around with the settings. Novice users may stick with the auto mode, but taking yourself out of your comfort zone and messing around with the settings can pay off in the long run. Try taking pictures of the same object using different camera settings and see which works the best in different situations. I went to the beach one time to take pictures, and I left it on auto mode. The pictures were decent, but I didn't necessarily like how the auto mode defaulted to landscape and increased the blue and green saturation. However, you can fix that that with some editing.
For editing, the NX300M comes with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5. Yes, my copy included a serial number. I don't know why others might be missing serial numbers. It's definitely a better software tool than I expected. However, people should keep in mind not to go too crazy with the special effects. Otherwise, images can start to look a bit fake. Try adjusting conservatively with the auto functions and work your way up with there.
Some real world data that you might not be expecting- is it can suck a battery down in under an hour easy. It's true, especially if your using it heavily. Spare batteries to the rescue however, and they are easy to get. So, not that big of an issue. I found also I did not miss a view finder. If you come from using a smart phone as your camera, this is just a luxurious step up from that. I was so used to using a smart phone for photos that I barely noticed there is no view finder on this camera. So it hasn't been a big deal at all.
Another thing I liked was the screen tilting up all the way and facing forwards for us self-adoring sort of folk. If you're into that sort of thing, make sure you select the nx300m. The nx300 does not do the full tilt like this one does. Also love the interchangeable lenses, as it adds a great deal of future versatility to the camera. Photos are beautiful. Video crisp. All matter of settings are available to occupy both novice to professional.
At the time the camera was made, it was claimed to be the most connectable camera available. Meaning it can link up to your tablet, smart phone, TV, can email straight from the camera even. Kind of neat. But not necessary either. All I really wanted was to make great images at a fair price, and that it surely does. Plus, it just plain looks cool. Retro, leather-bound. It's a looker folks. The 18-55mm kit lens is well enough for every day sorts of shoots, but do check out the list of samsung nx lenses out there. Lots of other options available that are highly reviewed likewise.
This review is rambling. I apologize. I just got stuff to say I guess.
I love it's petite size. It weighs in at somewhere under a pound, which is nice. I found it a feather weight rig to carry around all day, and hike with. Very fast to turn on and snap a shot of fleeting wildlife, or a precious moment soon to fade. If your jacket pocket is large, this camera will fit inside it. Get one of the pancake lenses, and it will really fit good.
Anyways, the photo quality is great, as is the video. The on board mics are fine too. It is far more comfortable to tote about all day than a big DSLR. And as many reviews have said, it is, or was at the time anyways, the best bang for the buck for a mirror-less camera at this price point. If you can live with out a view finder, and don't need to hook up microphones, (it has no audio jack), there is very little else to knock against this camera. A great little rig for travel. Indeed, a sweet, photo-blasting machine.
And it's sensor is huge!
