I have enjoyed a Panasonic plasma for 5 years and it was time to get a new TV for the family room. I looked at the remaining plasmas on the market and Samsung was the clear leader and the options came down to the current top-plasma from Samsung (F8500) and this specific plasma (H5000). The F8500 is $3200 and the H5000 is $1400, so the price difference is dramatic.

I did a lot of research and read reviews for both TVs including consumer, professional, and plasma fanatics. There is some concern on some "expert" message boards about the Pentile display, but I can confidently put those concerns to rest. Yes, if you walk up and literally put your nose against the TV, you can see the pixels. My couch is about 10 feet from the TV and the picture quality & black levels are absolutely incredible. I can see a striking performance improvement over my 5-year old, mid-tier Panasonic plasma. I'm sure the F8500 is better, but no where near $1800 better. I can't stand even good LED/LCD flatscreens, and this TV beats those easily. There is some glare on the glossy screen, but you just need to close blinds and turn out bright lights. We watch mostly in the evenings, so it's not a problem for us.

For customers who don't need 3D, don't need any Smart TV features (I have a Roku 3 already), and just need a no-frills TV with excellent performance, this is a great option to consider. It was the right option for my family.

One caveat is that there are only two HDMI ports. Unless you are utilizing a receiver, you will need an HDMI switch such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049SCB2Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

I replaced a 2006 model Panasonic 50" plasma with this model, only because I wanted a bigger tv and Panasonic stopped making them.

It has the same glare as any other plasma TV in daylight. If you're putting this TV in a bright room, it's going to reflect everything. Blackout shades on windows are your friend.

With that being said, the picture quality is fantastic. The debate on the RGB vs pentile is only valid if you like to sit 2 feet away from your 64" panel. There's no 3D, only a couple HDMI inputs (I've got an HDMI switching receiver so who cares), no "smart apps," no frill remote (who uses their TV remote anyway?).

On my couch at an appropriate viewing distance, at night, with a Blu-ray in, this is the best TV I've ever seen at almost any price.

Amazon Prime was free shipping and a dude in a van showed up with it and set it up for me.

After going back and forth with the pros and cons of LED vs Plasma, I decided to go with this TV within our budget and we're not disappointed at all. I was not interested in a Smart TV (who needs one when you can get an AppleTV, Roku, or Chromecast for for $35-$99). I was not interested in 3D (it's quickly losing its luster and what is the point of calibrating your TV to get the perfect picture just to put on tinted 3D glasses?).

I have it mounted on our living room wall at eye level. I have twelve 360 lumen (total 4320) recessed lights and do not have any glare problems with all the lights on.

Also, no problems with brightness with all the lights on and windows un-shuttered. There is a Cell Light control setting that you can increase along with Brightness adjustment to make the TV as bright as any LED.

Black levels are nice and deep. No "soap opera effect" or motion blurring because it is a plasma. 45 deg angle viewing from second couch about 9 feet away is excellent.

Pentile display concerns are overblown unless you normally sit 2 feet away from your TV in which you do see the pixels.

Heavier than an LED at 76lbs but easily wall mounted.

Energy usage is an estimated $22 a year based on 11 cents per Khw for 5 hours a day of use.

There are only 2 HDMI ports so if you have 3 or more devices then invest in an HDMI switch. There is a digital optical out port so you can connect that to your stereo system and your HDMI audio will be sent there.

My living room is a 266 sq ft rectangle so the TV speakers in surround sound mode is more than adequate for normal viewing. Owners with larger living rooms or cinephiles would probably want more audio power.

All in all, a gorgeous display at an amazing value.

Wow. I have no other way to describe it but wow. Ordered this to replace a 7 year old DLP Samsung which was beginning to die a slow death. Was looking real hard at getting a 4k TV and nearly bought into the hype. I encourage you to really do your research. Forget about the lack of content and understand that at normal viewing distances the human eye cannot discern the difference. I am about 12 feet back from this TV and to my eyes this looked every bit as good as the 4k displays in Best Buy. No joke. Flat out, jaw dropping, unbelievably great. Spent about 5 hours watching various sources on it today (Xbox One, Sony Blu Ray, Xbox 360, Amazon Instant Video, Direct TV) after getting it mounted, everything looked so much better than the DLP. Avatar looked almost 3d (no this is NOT a 3d TV just saying it was so crystal clear almost appeared that way). Box arrived beat to hell so I had the delivery guys unbox it in our foyer before moving it to it's final location. Careful inspection revealed the TV was in perfect shape, can't deduct any stars for the shipping as it is not product related and I feel confident Amazon would have made it right if need be however all turned out well in the end. All the normal "cons" of a plasma TV apply but if you know ahead of time they are not really "cons". Yes it is heavy and yes there is a glare but I knew that going in and for my situation neither mattered. I have complete control of the lighting since it is in a basement and I have curtains etc so not an issue. Mounted it with a tilting mount bought from Amazon which was just OK but felt sturdy enough that I have no concerns.Read more ›
