I’ve been following the advancements in the robot vac space for several years. Spent a great deal of time researching them, watching product demos, using them where possible in an effort to find the one product to fit all of my needs. It's become a bit of a holy grail for me. The problem was that every model seemed to have one or more fatal flaws, regardless of manufacturer. Some are poor at cleaning. Others have short battery life. Still others are too tall / fat and can’t maneuver under or around furniture. Add to this mapping issues, frequently getting stuck or hung up on obstacles, complicated setup, inability to suction hair or debris nearly as well as a normal vacuum and poor reliability and the end result is that I never found the one perfect robot vacuum that was worthy of my hard earned money. Until now…
Design and Setup
Powerbot R7040 on paper managed to meet all of my prerequisites. It had to have powerful and efficient cleaning, aggressive wheels to maneuver around obstacles, very intelligent mapping so it wouldn’t get stuck as often, a way to clean along walls and in corners, the ability to sense and transition between hardwood floors and carpet, and an easy way to set it up and control it remotely via wifi.
Unboxing and setup was pleasantly uneventful. The vacuum was very well packaged in some new style of air cushioning that looks like it would prevent just about any type of shipping damage. Good sign. Otherwise you just plug in the docking station, remove the plastic protecting the dustbin, turn on the power switch under the vacuum to give it power and set it on the dock to charge. Physical setup complete. To set up wifi, you download the Samsung Smart Home app from the play store and login or create a Samsung account. Press a button on the vacuum’s remote to enable wifi pairing, and a minute or two later setup is complete.
R7040 has multiple cleaning modes, including Auto, Spot clean and manual. You can set it to clean on a set schedule or at intervals throughout the day. It can clean your home on a single pass, or you can enable it to patrol the house continually until it needs a recharge. Cleaning power has 3 modes, Turbo, Normal and Quiet. Turbo is obviously the most effective, but it’s also the loudest. On normal mode you can watch TV without being disturbed, and I would imagine Quiet mode is for when you want it to vacuum while you’re sleeping (I haven’t used this mode yet).
In Turbo mode the R7040 is a cleaning monster. I have an expensive and very effective upright vacuum that is used regularly, and despite this the R7040 was able to pull an amazing amount of dirt and dog hair from the carpeting and floors. It adjusts itself to clean deeply when it senses it’s on carpeting and adjust power when it transitions to hardwood, and it does so seamlessly. The real star of the show, however is this Edge Cleaning system Samsung uses. Other robot vacs utilize long bristles to dislodge debris from corners and walls. In all of the research I’ve done this system seems to be hit or miss, with overly aggressive bristles sometimes spraying debris in all directions. The Samsung has a squeegee-like shutter that quietly deploys directly to the edge of the wall or corner and will pull the debris away from the wall so it can be accessed by the bristles. The words “Edge” flash on the screen and you can see and hear it in action. It’s not easy to get excited about a vacuum, but this is amazing. You can watch as it pulls dust and dog hair away from the wall and sucks it up effortlessly as the shutter retracts again. Imagine a high tech version of the old hungry hungry hippo game and you’ll visualize what it’s doing. It’s the most effective system for this problem that I’ve ever seen, and I dare say it is actually revolutionary. Samsung has a huge hit with this tech…
The device seems to map the environment and be aware of its surroundings very well. It hasn’t gotten stuck on anything yet, and its profile is slim enough that it fits under my kitchen chairs and table without getting hung up. The wheels and traction are also impressive. It rolls over small obstacles effortlessly and hasn’t gotten stuck on the transition from floor to carpet. Just for fun, I spent an hour or so placing items randomly around the house (after it presumably mapped the rooms) to see how it dealt with unexpected obstacles. With smaller, lighter items such as shoes or a tennis ball, it gently slows down as it approaches the item and begins to nudge it out of the way to resume it’s cleaning mission. For heavier items such as a chair or a pot, when it senses it can’t move the item it quickly adjusts its path around the object, testing each possible boundary until it has carved that section out of the map. If I later remove the object and make the path clear again, it’s fun to watch as it proceeds with caution until it sees the obstacle is no longer there. When it senses it’s not, it resumes its original path, full steam ahead. Really impressive to watch how it intelligently adapts to its surroundings and adjusts in real time.
Maintenance seems very simple. The dust canister is removed with a button. There’s a washable filter which you remove and then pull out the dust container. Dump out the debris, reinstall the filter and snap it back in place.
The app is surprisingly useful. Pairing to my tablet was straightforward, and from the app you can easily adjust the cleaning power, schedule and monitor battery life. The app will also let you know when cleaning is complete or if there’s any issue with the unit.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Good - Very impressed with the build quality and performance of the Powerbot R7040. Have zero complaints with cleaning capability, battery life or usage, and it’s a very nice looking unit. It has the ability to pick up deeply embedded dirt, hair, dog food and other debris just like any normal high quality upright vacuum on any surface type. Nice!
Bad – A previous review mentioned issues with the app and newer Android phones. There actually is a bit of an issue to be aware of. Apparently the app doesn’t work well with Android 7 Nougat. It will search for your access point and find nothing, making it impossible to pair to your network. Couple of points here. 1. This didn’t affect me as I was using an Android 6 Marshmallow tablet to connect, with which the app has zero issues. 2. Android Nougat distribution as of this moment stands at 7.1%, so it’s not a widespread issue statistically. 3. I would imagine fixing this issue is a top priority for Samsung as the new flagship Galaxy S8 is running Nougat. Would not be surprised if it’s resolved within the next few days. Also, the manual mentions “boundary markers” as an optional accessory to prevent the vacuum from entering certain areas. From the pictures, they don’t look particularly expensive and would definitely come in handy to stop it from going in certain rooms you don’t want vacuumed (like a bathroom). Would have been nice to include one or two in the box as I seriously doubt I’ll ever be able to track such an obscure item down at retail…
Ugly – my one year old American Foxhound absolutely LOATHES this thing. From the second the R7040 starts to clean until the second it returns to its dock he tries his very best to kill the unit. Barks uncontrollably, swats at it and bites it in an attempt to kill it and make it stop. I hope he comes to terms with it soon or it’s going to be a long summer. He is highly unimpressed and gives it zero out of 5 stars…
All I can say to summarize is that I am really, really happy with the R7040. For once, a company released a product that actually lives up to its billing, and my long search for a competent robot vacuum is FINALLY over. The cleaning power, mapping efficiency and inherent technology are the among the best I’ve seen in this space and represent the culmination of several previous generations of trial and error in this category. Some of the tech in this robot vac I would consider to be revolutionary, and in my opinion there isn’t anything out there to match it from a performance perspective. My dream of never having to manually vacuum my home again has finally come to pass. Powerbot R7040 is a huge hit with me, and I don’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting to own one of the best-performing robot vacs available.
The suction is good, and it did a pretty good job picking up everything it went over, including fine dust and dirt. We have a short hair dog, and the fur did manage to clog up the canister because the ejection point doesn't have much clearance from the top of the container, so hair bunched up and really got packed in. . See photos. I'd give the vacuum itself 5 stars.
The main reason for the mark-down is their software. At this price point I expect setup to work relatively well. This is a Wi-Fi model, so you must install the Samsung Smart Home app. My wife and I both have Android 7 phones, and the app has bugs at the access-point entry page (a Google search will return results to the Samsung forum on the issue - there are reported issues on other versions as well). In short, to get around it you need an older Android device (I fortunately had a tablet running Marshmallow) to add it to your Wi-Fi. Then for each phone you have that you want to use you need to go into the app and hit the 3 dots menu and under "Edit Home", "Add Device". It will then ask you to authenticate by holding the recharge button on the included remote. I had a number of challenges getting this to work, but power cycling the vacuum seemed to fix that and I was able to add it to both my Pixels and my Samsung SmartThings hub. However getting around all the bugs took about 3 hours for the setup. In general, all Samsung apps I've used (SmartThings, their TV remote app, and now Smart Home) are all very buggy and it's very disappointing since the products themselves are usually great.
I called customer service and got a helpful rep; once I was able to convince her it wasn't something I was doing wrong and that there were forum reports of the app compatibility issue, she took the time to search her database and confirmed that many people have reported this issue. She struggled finding the proper department to forward the issue to: she was home-appliance support, which doesn't make the app (made in South Korea). After about an hour with her trying very hard and talking to a variety of supervisors, they think they found out how to forward the issue on. Since I was able to find a workaround, I'm more interested in finding out Samsung's plan on resolving the bug and see what their commitment is to product sustainment and reliability. I'll post updates as I receive them.
Now the app. Awful. Crashes a lot, fails to pair, on the iPhone looks horrible because it doesn't scale for my 7+, but none of that matters. The remote that comes with the thing does everything the app does. The app does nothing special besides being being able to change settings or start the vacuum while you're not home. However, that doesn't matter. Just set the schedule to run every day, and empty the bin once a day. The vacuum will take care of the rest.
Worth every penny. Buy this thing. It will make you happy.
