The Samsung botvac is like a little cleaning soldier who methodically mows the lawn style of vacuuming up and down the rooms. It glides around chair legs and sweeps under the beds with ease and in the end picks up tons more dirt than my sad sad roomba 780 does (it's quickly being phased out because I'm still having to find it after it gets stuck... All over the house). I'm sure you've read many other reviews and someone else will go over all the ins and outs of how it cleans. Suffice to say that after owning many robots, I would only ever buy another Samsung! P.S. The guys in Best Buy recommended to buy the ones with the phone app and were at least 10x more powerful than a roomba. The top of the line (besides a dyson type vacuum) one allows the powerbot to map out your room and display your house's layout on your phone. You can even tell it which room you want it to clean. Pretty cool.
This is certainly the funnest vacuum cleaner I've ever owned, if not the most efficient. It does a remarkable job at navigating around the house, as long there are no are no black carpets. If its cliff sensor sees black, it backs off. That's a problem for me since I have several sizable area rugs on my hardwood floors in faux-Persian patterns that include black medallions. This vacuum either avoids these carpets altogether or gets trapped by the patterns, goes around in circles for a while, then gives up and beeps for help. The cliff sensor does do a good job preventing the vacuum from falling down stairs, however. It's fun to either turn the vacuum on and let it run, spiffing up the house, or simply program it to give the house a once over every day.
The vacuum seems to work best on hard floors (wood, cork, vinyl, tile), not carpet. I lined up all the vacuum cleaners in my house for a side by side comparison on carpet. I covered a medium plush acrylic carpet with a light layer of flour, then did one pass forward with each vacuum to see how they would do picking up the flour (see photo--the Samsung Powerbot is the one in the middle). For this test, I used the manual controls to do one sweep straight forward with the robo-vac. As shown in the photo below, the performance of this vacuum with flour on carpet was not very good—it barely picked up any flour at all, while the other vacuums got most or all of the flour with one sweep. I next tried using the spot clean feature to see if this vacuum could clean up the mess from the carpet, if it was just given a little more time. In spot clean mode the vacuum got a little more of the flour up, but not much. I eventually had to set the robot aside and clean up the mess with my trusty canister vac. So, fine flour in carpet is beyond the capabilities of this robot.
On the other hand, hard floors is where the vacuum really shines. I swept my wood floors with a broom, then put the robot into action to see what it could find. Even though I thought I had gotten the floors clean with the broom, I hadn't. After quietly scurrying around the room for a half hour or so, completely unsupervised, the robot-vac came back to its docking station with a remarkable load of dust and hair in its reservoir. So even though its cleaning capabilities on carpet are limited, it cleans better than I do on wood! Another area where this vac does well is under furniture. If it can squeeze under your bed, tables, or chairs, it will go and go until it finds and gobbles all the dust bunnies, then come back out again, all on its own. Thanks to this robot, for the first time ever, my bedroom is completely free of dust bunnies!
So what's not to like? Certainly, it's too bad that the cleaning performance on carpets is rather limited. And, your choice of carpets to have on your floors is limited as well—the vacuum simply won't run across carpets that include dark colors or black in their print. The vacuum also chokes on area rugs with fringe on the ends or lightweight welcome mats. The vacuum also gets lost sometimes under chairs, especially rocking chairs, and needs to be rescued. Most of the time, though, it stays out of trouble, provided your house is kept free of clutter. When using this vacuum for regular house maintenance, you soon find that it trains you to keep a neater house. You can't leave clothes lying on the floor, for instance, or the vacuum will choke on them when it makes its regular run. Beds have to stay made, or at least, no blankets hanging down where the vacuum can reach them. Shoes have to be put away with the laces tucked neatly inside. But these are all positive habits, the easier to learn if it means the floors get swept without you even having to think about finding a broom.
Overall, the strong points of this vacuum far outweigh the limitations. If you have a house with a lot of hardwood floors, you can basically say goodbye to your broom forever once you put this vacuum cleaner into service. Just tell the vac at what time each day you want your floors swept, and it will remember to sweep them, every day, and it will always remember to do under the beds and tables and chairs, not just the center of the room. Plus, there's the entertainment factor—family members and visitors will laugh in disbelief as they watch the little robot scurry about your house unsupervised, hard at work. Or, your kids will argue with each other over who gets to do the vacuuming, steering the robot around with the manual controls. Much as the automatic clothes washer changed your grandmother's life, and the dishwasher changed your mother's life, this device will change yours—just press a button and the drudgery of another household chore is gone.
First of all, It's LOUD, like as loud as a full upright vacuum kind of loud. I was out on our patio with the windows and doors closed and could hear it with no problem.
Sure, I could live with loud, and I still use this thing, but when you compare it to its biggest robot vacuum competitor, it comes up short in two major areas.
1) It's bulky. It's so big that it can't get under the cabinets in the kitchen at all. I don't know about your kitchen, but crumbs and dust seem to settle in these areas of mine. Not only is the competition flat enough to get into these places, but it also has a little brush that sticks out of the side of its vacuum and spins, so that all of those little bits in the corners get pulled into the suction area. The Samsung model does not the brush feature, so that even when it's not right under the counter, when it's just moving along the baseboards, it doesn't pick up dirt along the walls.
2) It has no guidance system. The competition's model has little sensors that can be placed in doorways to prevent the bot from going into other rooms or areas you don't want clean. The Samsung bot just goes about its biz, and if it comes to a door or open space, it just goes through. In that sense it wanders a lot more than the competitor, so you have to watch it. If you want to clean your just your dining room or your kitchen, you can't just turn this thing on and leave, come home and find it charging in its nest. Chances are it will amble into the living room or den, and after an hour of circling will run out of battery and just die there.
Given its shortcomings, the price of this vacuum puts it out of consideration when compared to other robot vacuums on the market.
UPDATE 10/25/16: I have come to hate this thing. It leaves dirt and fuzz at the edges of rugs in every room. It has no navigation, so you can't set it to clean one room without setting barriers up, like it's a toddler. I hardly use it any more.
