The X5 comes in a nice compact box, and as you can see, is barely bigger than the T5 and fits in my hand easily.
To test the speed of this drive, I did not use any synthetic benchmark testing, as I feel those do not represent real world performance. The laptop in use has the following specifications:
Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9370 (2018 model)
RAM: 16GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Storage: 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, PCIe NVME
Operating system: Windows 10 home
I plugged both drives and transferred 357GB of data (i.e., movies pictures, TV shows, etc) from the T5 to X5. As you can see from my pictures, it took just about 20 minutes to copy everything over. The X5 did not come anywhere close to the promised 2800 write speed, but I can definitely say it's much faster than the T5 I own and my old hard drive. For kicks, I copied a 5GB file, planet of the apes to itself and that took literally 5 seconds. INSANE!
I do want to say that the read speeds arent impressive. Copying(reading) that same file to my desktop from the X5, oddly only netted me 9mbs, and would occasionally spike up to over 100mbs.
The other thing to note is that the X5 does heat up when used for an extended period of time. Research shows that the drive throttles itself when getting too hot, which could explain why the speed dipped every so often, but all drives heat up so I wouldn't let this deter you from buying it.
I had to return this ssd, due to its lackluster performance. I owned both the 1TB and 2TB model and in my experience, this drive did not perform even remotely close to its promised speeds.
My first issue is that its read/write speeds were extremely inconsistent. Ranging from 1.5GBs all the way down to 400MBs, with it averaging 400MBs. This is unacceptable considering I own the Samsung T5 and it performed better in almost every test I did.
I CANNOT recommend this to any consumer.
1/26 Update - Still going strong! For comparison purposes I went back to the T5 as my boot drive and the difference was shocking. Everything is faster with the X5 from photo/video editing to just general system responsiveness. Reusing my T5 as a Time Machine drive. Apple should be embarrassed for the prices they charge on their SSD upgrades compared to this option.
If you need the ultimate in speed, and if you have the money...look no further. I'd actually ordered the OWC version before this X5....and the the OWC comes with a cable that is permanently attached...and it was VERY "touchy" (it would disconnect if bumped). Where this Samsung comes with a nice quality ThunderBolt 3 cable...ready to rock.
This drive only works with a thunderbolt port. It does not work with a USB port. This means it is reliant on the Thunderbolt port. The problem is that your laptop thunderbolt port needs software to work. Finding the right software is not easy. So, if you need to share files between two computers they both need a thunderbolt port and they both need the correct software installed to make them work. I'm pretty good at software but the time involved to figure out the correct software wasn't worth it for me. I returned the drive.
I'm confident that once you get the right software installed to get your thunderbolt port to recognize your new drive your will be really happy. This drive promises screaming fast speeds.
