Convertible Zone Can Be Used as Refrigerator or Freezer

The Convertible Zone on the bottom right can be used as a fridge or freezer, letting you choose how to best utilize your storage space. It features four temperature zones: fridge at 41 degrees F, chilled at 30 degrees F, soft freeze at 23 degrees F, and frozen at -9 to 1 degree F.

When the Convertible Zone is used in its higher temperature zones, this refrigerator provides 25.6 cubic feet of fresh food storage.

I'll divide this up into three sections. What's wrong with this refrigerator and how to deal with Samsung once it fails and how it turned out.

What's wrong: We had identical problems as the other reviewers with the icemaker. There is supposed to be a defroster that keeps the humidity down in the three zones and the icemaker. For whatever reason, it doesn't work effectively and as a result will cause excess moisture to condense in the ice making section and eventually freeze the moving parts of the icemaker rendering it inoperable. If you own one and are noticing drips of water coming out in the inside of the main box, soft ice, or a sluggish ice dispenser, turn off the ice maker and remove the tray. Check inside to see if there's icing other than the the tray. This is the first sign; it will eventually make it where your ice tray will get frozen in place and you won't be able to remove it. As for getting this fixed, if your refrigerator is older than 12 months, it will be at your expense. The bigger problem; there are three coils plus the element in the ice maker that are driven by what's called the Digitial Inverter Compressor. They all use a flammable refrigerant (my understanding is that it's mostly butane). The compressor basically has an electronic valve that regulates the flow of refrigerant to the various sections to make it multi-zone. The coil in the main box has a electronic heater that acts as a defroster and helps the evaporator coil from ice over. If the coil ices over, as ours did, it will stop the flow of air over the coil and make the main box stop cooling. Ours was unable to get lower than 55 degrees F. This can either damage the coil or the compressor and probably causes the sensor to throw bad readings as well as damage the heater.

I love the versatility of this refrigerator and the capacity. BUT the ice maker design needs a lot of work! In the six months since we bought this refrigerator, making and dispensing ice has been a constant problem. Both refrigerator and freezer are set to the recommended temp but the ice is soft, the dispenser drips and the ice maker often stops making ice so it can't dispense it! Seems to be no reason. I've usually been able to take out the ice bin, put it back in, then it seems to reboot. Now we can't even get the ice bin out of the refrigerator to try to do the temporary fix.
Consumer Reports rated this refrigerator #1. I can't help but wonder if they tried it out for any period of time.
Would I recommend this to a friend? No, only an enemy! I sure wish I had read the reviews about Samsung's bad (or no) customer service before we bought this.

The Samsung 4 door fridge model: RF32FMQDBSR/AA is big, beautiful and a work of art. It is also something that Appliance repair technician’s say is unreliable. Here’s why – it uses new technology and lots of it to do what a basic fridge did a few years ago. The compressor does not use Freon, it’s now gas sealed and there are 2 compressors (one for the fridge & one for the freezer) to cool the large areas. The 2 compressors in themselves are not a problem but where the issues begin are that everything is computer/microprocessor controlled in the fridge. So sow long does your home PC work without issues? That’s right, the appliance Tech’s say you’re lucky to get a 3 year life out of this fridge before you start paying some hefty repair bills. Here’s my experience:
Built a kitchen around this refrigerator’s special size requirements. 2 days after the appliance was plugged in, the refrigerator warmed up to 64 degrees and would not cool down. All the food ($245) spoiled. Fortunately the store I bought the appliance from also sold me an extended warranty and they reimbursed me for the food loss. They also were kind enough to provide a loaner fridge until we could work out the issue with the appliance.
So here is where it gets interesting (frustrating) with Samsung being absolutely horrendous in customer service. As I said, 2 days after I plugged the appliance it, it stopped working. I was on the phone with Samsung 4 different times over an hour each time to try and get service on this brand new fridge. Samsung’s call center is abysmal.

After almost a year of owning this refrigerator, the ice maker stopped working and I was unable to remove the ice bucket. I contacted Samsung to arrange for service (a long process that took almost two weeks). A very helpful technician came out and spent nearly an hour steaming the ice maker to melt the ice that had frozen the ice bucket shut. Once he removed the bucket, he informed me that the refrigerator was beyond repair and I would need to contact Samsung for a replacement. The problem has to do with a defective defroster that damaged the ice maker. According to the technician, this is a problem Samsung is aware of and has not advised consumers.

I am grateful this problem occurred now while the refrigerator was still under warranty. I cannot recommend this refrigerator at all.
