The printer itself is great, but unboxing the printer and getting it set up, for me, was a nightmare. Like every other toner cartridge I've installed (and that's a lot, since I supported a school full of laser printers), this one has some packaging on the outside and a piece of plastic tape that runs inside the cartridge and needs to be removed. This is simple--grab the tape and pull to the side.
I pulled. A cloud of toner erupted. The tape came out part of the way and stopped.
After a half an hour of toner clean-up with masking tape, I double-checked the quick start guide to be sure I was doing it correctly. Step 4, pull tape to the right.
I enlisted a trusting assistant who did not know he was about to be covered in toner, grabbed gloves, and we moved outside. We used entirely too much force to try to pull the tape out--no good.
I was getting the scissors when Trusting Assistant suggested I contact Samsung. Against my better judgment after previous bad experiences, I called.
The first call disconnected after I finally got through all the menus. "I could not understand you. Goodbye." *click*
The second call finally got me through to someone who had great difficulty understanding me. This may explain why she also couldn't understand the problem. I finally got her to look at the quick start guide and pointed out the step where I was stuck. She put me on hold three times, for a total of 40 minutes, and finally came back and asked "Have you tried pulling it out the other side?"
(If you've never done this before, trust me on this: that is not possible.Read more ›
I haven't had time to fully check out the printer, but first impressions are that it's a nice enough budget printer, if inadequately documented in the manual. If you decide to take the plunge and get this printer and have questions or issues, be certain to go to Samsung's FaceBook Support site if you need service, or you will be driven insane by the courteously useless people that keep putting you on hold, only to come back with bad information, followed by the poor advice to ship your printer to a service center.
Note that if you press the power button, it will not actually power off the printer. You have to unplug the printer if "sleep mode" isn't off enough for you.
If you have issues with SyncThru software, note that the default login ID is "admin" and the default password is "sec00000" (5 zeros).Read more ›
Concurrent to these phone calls, I tweeted 5 messages to Samsung. A day later I received a voicemail stating they would only repair my printer, not send a replacement. So I called 1-800-SAMSUNG again and asked to speak to a supervisor. After asking, insistently, and after 8 minutes, I was put through to "Lee." Lee told me they could only repair the printer and send it back; he had no discretion to do otherwise. He could transfer me to Executive Relations but I would have to hold between 15-30 minutes and they would tell me the same thing. He suggested I contact Amazon to address the matter. I suggested it was ridiculous that they not immediately replace a printer that had not printed even a ream of paper but Lee said there was nothing he could do.
All I can say is, caveat emptor should you buy a Samsung printer. They are shoddy and manufacturer service is essentially non-existent.
