The Heart of Your Smart Home
SmartThings lets you control and monitor your home using your smartphone from anywhere in the world. You can secure your home for a fraction of the cost of a traditional home security system; stay connected to loved ones wherever you are; save money on energy costs; and control and automate lights, locks, temperature, electronics, and more to create a smart home that automatically reacts to your preferences and gives you peace of mind.
How? It all starts with the SmartThings Hub.
Once you download the free SmartThings app, you can use your smartphone as a remote to monitor and control all of the smart lights, locks, cameras, appliances, and other sensors in your home from wherever you are. The SmartThings Hub acts as a messenger. When your connected devices have important things to tell you (“Sara’s home!” “Someone left the front door open!” “There’s unexpected motion by the back door!”), the Hub will relay that information to your smartphone. As long as you have a Hub, you can add as many SmartThings-compatible devices as you like to create a fully connected home.
Ethernet-connected Hub plugs directly into your Internet router and supports ZigBee, Z-Wave as well as IP-accessible devices. It includes a power cord and is compatible with hundreds of smart devices today and even more in the future.
The free SmartThings app is available to download for iOS, Android, and Windows.

The hub itself is very small and lightweight. It measures 14x11.5x3cm. The top is not perfectly flat (as you can see in the product images) and I wouldn't recommend trying to place anything on top of this. There are only two ports on the device: Ethernet to connect to your network and Micro USB for power. The hub is very light, especially considering its size. While running 24x7 for about a month the hub is not even warm. It does not feel cheaply made, but is plastic. There is an indicator LED in the back which will display the status (for example, flashing LED means it is looking for a device to connect to).
For devices, you can use SmartThings proprietary devices or pretty much any Z-Wave or Zigbee devices. Connecting is usually very quick and easy since the application walks you through the process for most devices. Be patient with devices that do not instantly connect, you may need to reset or exclude then reconnect. Out of thirteen different device types, I have only had one device that would not connect. SmartThings support was outstanding and very prompt. They walked me through many possible solutions, and were extremely polite. The device was a newly supported Cree Connected LED bulb, and was easily returned to Home Depot for a full refund.
To automate your home, SmartThings is based on IFTTT (If This Then That). Their system provides capability to do things like: turn on lights when motion is detected, slowly brighten lights to wake you up, automatically lock doors when closed for a certain period of time, lock all doors and turn off all lights and appliances when no one is home, etc. There are few limits for those with little experience and no limit for the technologically inclined. The application will offer you common IFTTT "SmartApps" for any device you connect, but you can create your own or look to what the SmartThings community has created to meet your needs.
Pros: Sleek, lightweight, small form factor, limitless home automation and security system, rated best home automation hub by CNet, easy to use, open source, and is extremely compatible with most home automation devices.
Cons: The application has some latency issues and occasionally shows the wrong status for devices. I have had to extend the geofence area around my house when using cell phones as presence sensors. Currently, the only camera support is Dropcam. SmartThings has announced they will be adding support for some IP based camera systems soon, but has not done so as of 3/19/2015. Must be connected to your network with an Ethernet cable (the only way to be pseudo-wireless is to use a wireless bridge or power line adapter). Three amazing features to be in SmartThings hub 2.0 which are not available in this model: built-in battery backup, GSM cellular backup, and Bluetooth device support.
I would absolutely recommend this device for anyone interested in home automation.

and a handful of others
I chose the SmartThings hub for a few reasons:
-It was an extremely popular kickstarter project with a lot of support
-It supports numerous devices
-The app has a lot of capabilities and limitless potential
-It seemed easy to setup
-The user forums have a lot of activity and growing daily
Before the hub arrived, I got anxious and installed the app and opened it...it got to the screen where it wanted to connect a hub and I closed it. When the hub arrived, I opened the app back up and that screen wasn't there and it took me a bit to figure out where to add a hub...I think the app should have auto-detected a hub wasn't connected and should have automatically taken me to that screen. So my advice for now is wait on the hub is in your hands before installing the app!
Once I found it again, I had it connected to the network along with 3 zwave devices within about 10 minutes. It was easy connecting each device and they responded quickly and perfectly whether I was on the same wifi network or off of it.
The part that got me a bit hung up was when I went to setup modes and phrases...and smartapps...it was a bit confusing to figure out where to make each setting to do exactly what I was needing. It got a bit more confusing when I tried to find the answer on their site with the various places such as Labs, Build community, troubleshooting, FAQ, getting started guide, etc. I think their biggest challenge at this point is centralizing a strong knowledge base to make SmartThings as "consumer friendly" as possible.
I ended up emailing their support with a question and they responded quickly with a very personal, non-canned response which you don't see much of these days! Props for that!
I get a bit concerned with the growth of numerous smartapps because I think there needs to be a core of basic apps that people can easily find, use, and that get contstant support and updates.
Don't get me wrong, they're off to a fantastic start, but the hub is only as good as its app. I'm saving that final 5th star for when they get the app tweaked a bit and more devices supported. It's a GREAT product and I'm completely happy with the choice I've made. I'd definitely recommend it to others (actually, I already have). It's going to eat up my wallet now because I'm wanting to automate EVERYthing! haha
