Snappy, a little noise

Snappy little drive. It does seem to make spin-up sounds on boot but then it quiets down, unlike a Seagate drive I have that makes a little click every few minutes and will probably fail soon. I use this as the main drive in my home theater PC and it's plenty fast. I thought about swapping this for an SSD as boot and this for storage but honestly it's fast enough for me. I try to keep background programs to a minimum for this computer and with a good chunk of RAM installed I don't find myself waiting for this to spin up and read during movies or games, and I play a lot of games. Dirt3, Skyrim, Minecraft (game and server) all run great off of it, not much time loading at all. If you're serious about speed, you'll need an SSD. If you're just looking for a nice drive with a lot of space, this is a great pick. I run Windows 7 x64 home with 8GB of RAM, if you use much less you might start seeing slow downs from swapping on and off the drive, but if you don't run many games you can probably get away with 4GB fine, but I wouldn't recommend less if this is your boot/install/swap space. Obviously this is a desktop drive (3.5 inch) so don't plan on putting this in a laptop or anything. Box is very bare-bones, exactly what you should expect with an OEM drive, and there really isn't anything else you need. Pop it in and go.

Lightning fast and can handle heavy I/O

I grew up buying Western Digital and Seagate, so I was hesitant to purchase Samsung, even though Samsung provides storage devices to MANY equipment manufacturers and stands as one of the top dogs in component supply. I bought 5 of these beasts to build a home NAS with raid-5 and FreeNAS to get about 3.7 TB of usable space for home entertainment. I now prefer Samsung drives and will only buy these when building machines.

The price point is a little higher than the WD Caviar and Seagate Barracuda, but the quality may be a bit higher too. Not that I am no longer a fan of those two companies, nor do I just disregard anything they have to offer. But after I installed and configured these drives in a RAID-5 array, and tested basic I/O over an enterprise-class gigabit network, I consistently saturated the gigabit bandwidth (or near saturation at 110-112 MB/s), I realized that these drives are blisteringly fast. Granted, there are performance improvements in read rate in this RAID array, but not much improvement in writes. Technically, the 3.0 Gb/s SATA connection would suggest it could move data three times faster than this, but that's not only nearly impossible to reach in a desktop, 100+ MB/s is very difficult to achieve in a desktop as well.

In short, while these Spinpoint F3 models have been retired, please consider Samsung storage devices when building a machine or replacing drives. I'm a 15-year Seagate veteran and I seriously may not go back. In fact, the only reason I might go back now and again will be a result of cost. Again...you pay what you get for, though.

I replaced the hard drive in my 2 GHz Core 2 Duo 17" iMac with the Samsung Spinpoint 1 TB drive. The drive it replaced was an Apple-branded Western Digital 180 GB Caviar series. The Spinpoint has been up and running for a month and has performed very well so far.

The original Western Digital drive it replaced somehow managed to be almost completely silent during operation. There was a slight whirring noise when it booted up, but after that, no noise at all. The Spinpoint is silent except when it is seeking, when it makes a muffled clunking sound.

This is only noticeable in a quiet room. Taking into account that this model of iMac normally has no fan noise, it is likely that in most applications, you'll never hear the noise the Spinpoint drive makes.

This is the first time I have not gone with a Western Digital drive. I hope that the Samsung Spinpoint has an equally long service life but only time will tell.

The drive arrived in the well-designed, eco-friendly packaging as have the other drives I purchased from Amazon recently.

This drive is quiet, very quiet. It came with out cables - bare bones, but I knew this before buying. My main gripe is that I got 937.77gigs of space. I know you never get the full amount listed, but I would have expected to be somewhere of the ballpark of 970gigs - 990 gigs, 62 gigs and change is a LOT to lose. Because of that loss I am unsure if I would buy a 2nd one - quiet yes, definately - just don't expect to come close to what you paid for size wise

Very good compromise between price, storage capacity, and performance. You get 16.6GB/dollar which, while not the absolute highest if you compare to the Spinpoint F4 2TB, is very good considering that it has higher sequential average read/write speeds at 120MB/s against 100MB/s and it has noticeably lower access times, making it seem more responsive. It's very quiet; you can really only hear it when it's doing seeking operations. Temperatures are very low, as well. Copying 62GB of files to it, it only got to around 38C. This Hard Drive has been on the market for almost two years now, and it seems to be extremely reliable. If you don't need SSD performance or can wait until they get to lower GB/dollar, this is what you should go with.

For an ecogreen unit this has performed brilliantly over the time I've had it, it's not had any issues, it with stood being moved house with me twice, and is still the main data drive in one of my main machines.

Sustained data rates are good, however you do notice the rate decline once the cache memory in the unit is saturated, on power loss you can have about 1ms delay before files are fully written, so pulling the power whilst writing large files is not recommended by myself with this unit.

I have booted this drive in both UEFI, and legacy BIOS, machines.

This is the first Samsung hard drive I've actually bought for myself, and I'm very happy to say, it's performed well, it's lasted a long time, and it's survived everything I've thrown at it.

If you are not a fan of Seagate products then DON'T buy this item. The chances are that you may receive a Seagate Barracude drive with a Samsung sticker put over the top of it claiming it to be a Spinpoint F3.
I don't personally have anything against Seagate, but they have a lot of bad reviews for quality so I specifically chose a Samsung.
I think it is wrong that a company should be allowed to sell their own products under the guise of another product simply because they bought them out recently.

In summary: If you don't mind Seagate then this product is fine. If you specifically wanted a high quality samsung drive then don't buy this as it's not an F3.
Edit: Have been using the drive for 3 days and given it a lot of work, works fine and is fast and very quiet. Fingers crossed that it bears more Samsung durability than Seagate durability in the years to come.

Not for all Gigabyte motherboards

Nothing wrong with Samsung HDDs but I have just returned this one because it is not recognised as a 1tb by my Gigabyte motherboard with Xpress Recovery (dual boot system). It registers it as a 31Mb drive.

This common problem can be fixed by going into the Samsung website where one can download an corrective ISO application which is burnt to a bootable CD. The computer is booted up with it, then the correct drive selected, the capacity is chosen as a 1tb and the fix made permanent. Sorry, too much bother and some people have problems in attempting this so I have now ordered a Western Digital Caviar Green to replace it. This drive has a larger cache of 64Mb and is just a couple of pounds or so dearer. I know this drive works well as I already have installed one with Windows 7 as my main drive and it is simply perfect.

Can't get enough

I started buying Samsung drives after reading a review of the F1 spinpoint. That was a few years ago now but two years ago I built a high Spec PC to do rendering of 3D art and used the F3 both in the 1TB and 2TB forms. A couple of months ago I built yet another system and while I used SSDs for the operating system they are not really a solution for storing lots of data. So data storage is via 2 X 1TB and a 2TB F3 drives with yet another being used for external backup via an hot switch SATA box..

In total I have 8 Samsung drives in use on an almost daily basis and they have been trouble free. In addition they are very quiet even with the very distinctive whine when they spin up.

While any version of these drives are available I am unlikely to look elsewhere for any future build.
