Bought four of these Samsung drives. They're a little heavier and bulky (actually normal sized drives) compared to the Seagate Barracude 7200.12 drives they replaced (Barracuda drives are a little thinner). I found the Barracudas to be excellent drives and would also recommend them. My Barracudas had passed the two year mark and being that I use my drives heavily for video/audio I replace them every 2 years for data safety. I decided to give the Samsungs a try as they have been recommended to me and I found a great deal here on Amazon.
Noise level: quite, about the same as the Seagate. One drive will be quieter than your PC/Mac fans but two or more will add some noise to the system in a quite space such as a sound room. I'd post noise levels but I left my meter at work.
Temp: These drives run a little warmer than expected and just a few degrees more than the Seagates on average. You can expect around 100-105 F average on the system drive at idle in a room with 75F ambient temp (2009 8-core Mac Pro Tower). Under heavy load temps can get up there but are still within a good range (again this is in a system with very good air flow). In a raid set up temps are a little lower in heavy load as each drive is working less.
Speed: Speed is good and a little faster than the Seagates but not astronomical. Your life wont change but I would have to say these are some of the faster 7200rpm SATA3 drives out there in this price range.
Speed in a raid 0: Have 3 of these drives in a software raid stripe and have seen 420+ MB/sec trans speeds in sequential and just shy of 400 in random. Of course the size of your blocks, system, and software or hardware raid will all effect your speed.
Speed from sleep mode: FYI, if your using these drives for multimedia then you really need to turn off the sleep option for the drives in your system settings. These drives take years to wake up, especially in a raid stripe. Doing this will kill the "energy savings" these drives are reported to have... so don't buy these drives for energy saving reasons... if your working with multimedia you should already know this.
Dependability: We will see as I haven't had them long enough yet. So far so good.
Packaging: COME ON AMAZON! The four drives came in a large box, which is good. Two of the drives were packaged very well in their own small boxes with proper support. The other two drives were just floating around the big box (they were in anti static packaging). The big box was in turn stuffed with air bag packing but not enough to stop drives from drifting around. What happened Amazon?!? Did your employee pack two drives before lunch then came back too lazy to finish the job right? Why is packaging a problem with Amazon 50% of the time?
over all I can recommend these drives.
But get this, per Samsung's website the warranties for these two drives expire Oct 2013 and not Dec 2013, my purchase month. What happened to the last two months? Did Samsung start the warranty period when the store/Amazon ordered them? My drives came from an Amazon marketplace store (Goodios by Brainstorm Corp). I talked to Amazon customer service and they have referred me to Samsung to see if they can resolve the issue. I'll be calling them on Monday.
As far as quality of these drives, I cannot brag about them. I just returned a 1Tb and a 750GB to Samsung that I had for about 18 months. Both drives failed within one day of each other. The 1TB drive was my main data drive and it failed just after I backed it up to another Samsung 1TB drive. The 1TB got the click of death and the 750GB was starting to fail according to the SMART message I kept getting upon starting my computer; plus this drive saw very little use. I used it to archive video. After coping some files from it to my computer drive, it failed. Samsung's RMA process was very easy. Took about 10 days to get replacement drives (thank God I backup my drives). Samsung also sent a 1TB hard drive in exchange for the 750GB that I sent in. The exchanged drives were not Samsung's latest and greatest drives, but newer models than I sent in. My personal opinion about hard drives: It is what it is. None of them are prefect. You cannot find any hard drive with a prefect performance record. A drive can be loved and hated by so many. Technology, you got love it. (I also checked the warranty periods on the exchanged drives that Samsung sent me. They were covered correctly and they came shipped to me in Samsung's retail hard drive boxes. All nicely packaged in foam.)

One can hear them quietly muttering to themselves when the Raid box starts up as one of the PCs logs into the network, but that is about it, operation is otherwise almost silent, and the temperature controlled fan on the back of the Synology box hardly ever needs to wake up, just on the odd hot summer's day.
These 5400rpm drives are not the fastest, partly because of being fitted in a Raid array, and so the Synology Giganet interface is not stressed, but in this application reliability is top of my list and both the drives in use seem to be doing very well with no errors reported on either by the internal diagnostics system.
This is a good-value medium-size low-stress drive when found at the best market rates (3:1 retail range observed!) and so is recommended.
>THE GOOD: Quiet
>THE BAD: has died very quickly
