I started hunting for 7200RPM drives when I stumbled on a review that said this is the fastest non-SSD notebook drive out there. I found it for $72 so I gave it a shot. The PB now boots in 41.0 seconds (including POST) vs 51.7 seconds with the old drive. Apps are a lot snappier too! But what is REALLY fast now is shutdown... I wish I had benchmarked that before the upgrade.

Replacing in iBook G4: Time Consuming But Do-able

This drive works great in my iBook G4, and it is MUCH quieter than the original hard drive. Be warned that do-it-yourself websites that say the process of replacing the hard drive in an iBook is "Difficult" are not exaggerating -- it is a very lengthy process that involves removing close to four dozen screws, the top and bottom of the outer case, both heat shields, the Airport card and more. But it definitely is "do-able," if you have the patience, even if you don't think of yourself as tech-savvy. (I never had replaced a hard drive before, and I managed to do it without screaming, cussing or crying.) The hardest part for me was when I hit some frozen screws that didn't want to turn, but eventually I coaxed them free (with a lot of elbow grease). Also, be aware that you probably will need a special star-tip screwdriver to remove the four mounting screws that are attached to the hard drive itself (screws that must be re-screwed into the new hard drive in order to mount it in place). Some sites say those screws can be removed with pliers, but mine wouldn't budge. I took it to a Best Buy to ask if they had the right screwdriver, and the Geek Squad guy there was nice enough to do the un-screwing for nothing. I researched laptop hard drives till I was blue in the face (not quite). All laptops in the last 3-4 years are now SATA drives, and almost all aftermarket offereings are SATA, but if you are trying to breath new life in an older laptop, SATA is not an option... IDE laptop drives are actually scarce and there are not too many choices. This, after much research, was what I decided was the best choice.

If you have a 4200 RPM and or a small cache (512K or 2meg) you will notice a very nice performance increase upgrading to this drive.

This is a single platter drive, which means fewer moving parts and less heat/power use. I bought several of these, and was able to get them for an average of under $50 shipped. I still have a couple, as last time I bought 3. I have had Seagate laptop (and 3.5" desktop) drives fail on me personally, and have stopped using Seagate at all anymore. They used to be teh gold standard but the last 3-5 years have fallen from that position. I fix friends and family's PCs (as well as volunteer fixing my kids school PCs) and Seagate has been the brand I have seen primarily (fail) in the last 4 years, some drives failing in well under a year.

If you have an IDE laptop, this is the drive to upgrade to, if you have a desktop PC with only IDE on he motherboard you can get converters that will plug into a 3.5" SATA drive and convert it to be used as an IDE drive (make sure you don't choose a size bigger than the motherboard supports). IDE in desktops basically 'maxed out' at 500Gigs. Actually above 400Gigs was hard to find.

I have a plethora of Samsung laptop and desktop drives and have been happy with them all.

There's not a lot of choices for a PATA 2.5" drive, but at least what's left is quality. No issues with the Spinpoint drive or this seller. Follow the directions in the box and install your own drive in 5 minutes or less.

UPDATE: 6 mos in and the drive failed. Likely it's just defective, but I wonder if it doesn't deal with heat very well (it's in an HP laptop after all). It's bad enough that the drive failed and I'll have to completely reconfigure and reload my entire laptop, but to add insult to injury, getting it replaced has been worse than you can imagine. 1st, Samsung just passed their HDD biz off to Seagate, so my drive had to be sent to Samsung who in turn sent it to Seagate. None of their RMA#s, tracking codes, or serial numbers match. Seagate is completely clueless! It's been more than 3 weeks and they claim that they still don't have the drive, but miraculously offered to substitute this drive with a 250gb external drive, what?!
