If you accidentally installed the software on your Mac, back up all your files and follow the instructions below that are listed but hard to find in the Samsung T5 SSD Manual. You can also refer to the screenshot I attached to this review which Samsung explains how to delete it from Windows and Mac.
Software needs to be deleted manually by executing CleanupPSSD_Mac.sh in SW installation path.
(Normally ~/Library/Application Support/PortableSSD/CleanupPSSD_Mac.sh)
*Third party cleaners such as AppCleaner may not delete “Samsung Portable SSD” SW completely.
One non-Mac related issue is the fact that it's simply not as durable as it looks. The connector to the USB cable is made with cheap metal and gets easily bent. Not good for technology of this general quality.
But the proprietary software that comes with it is a problem. It frequently stops recognizing the drive when the computer has gone to sleep, necessitating you unplug it and plug it back in.
There is always a message that it was ejected improperly after it *mounts*
I updated the software at one point and it refused to be recognized on my laptop. I found the offending file after an hour and replaced it with a backup and then it worked.
In short, it's lovely to carry all this storage in hand, but Samsung should make a product that plugs and plays in Mac--we're way past proprietary software for accessories these days. And while we're at it, they should at least make the software flawless.
However every subsequent attempt to run the Samsung T5 failed to connect.
Amazon tech support could not help and connected me to Samsung support, which sent me a complicated 14-step process to get it to work. Failed. Called Samsung again, rep said “this is a known issue with MacOS that we are working to resolve” and suggested an even more complex set of instructions involving disabling all security from my Macbook. No thanks. I have no more time to waste on this nonsense. My previous backup drives (Seagate and Western Digital) were easy plug-and-play with no connectivity issues (until they finally conked out after several years of reliable service).
Goodbye Samsung. Returning the T5 to Amazon. Looking for a backup drive that just works, from a company with better quality control.
Top reviews from other countries
I purchased the Samsung T5 500GB brand new, however once I installed the ssd software it’s prompting for a password. This product seems to be USED!
This is upsetting because it was advertised as a NEW product. Once I scrolled through the reviews - I could see other customers who also have experienced this..
Can this be looked into immediately and actioned!
What happens if you click through the Apple warning messages....the Samsung software will install, but if you make the mistake of clicking on the Samsung software update that's indicated when the software is open. YOU WILL BRICK THE SAMSUNG DRIVE MAKING IT USELESS! What happens is that you get a message asking you to connect the ssd drive to your computer, but what happens after you update the software is that the SSD drive and you Mac will NO LONGER RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER!
It's a bit of a process to get rid of the software. You have to enter a command string into Terminal to get rid of the &&^%$ software!
OK....do the following and you should be good.
Download the setup software. DO NOT UPDATE THE SOFTWARE WHEN INSTALLED. The software will ask you to assign a password. DO NOT ASSIGN A PASSWORD. Turn that option off. AGAIN.....TURN THAT PASSWORD OPTION OFF! The software will warn you the the drive won't be safe....yada yada!
Once you do the above you should be able to see the drive your desktop and Finder. The final step to drag the SAMSUNG software from your desktop into your trash basket and forget about it. YOU DO NOT NEED THE SOFTWARE....Just the drivers which are now installed. So every time you plug in the SSD drive will see it without opening any Samsung software.
So... if you give command to copy-paste, say, 1GB worth of many small files files, it starts great but within seconds slows down to speed of a floppy-disk. That point onwards the transfer is painfully slow for an SSD. (This does not happen with the SSD that came with my computer because ALL of disk space is truly SSD).
For day-to-day I/O where you are saving small files or retrieving them, it works great. But if you do bulk transfer, it is just another USB 2.0 or even slower (after the initial spike though).
Build quality is good & it came with 2 wires (1) USB-C wire (2)conventional USB wire. It was very easy to set-up.
Bought this Samsung T5 Portable SSD 500GB USB 3.1 (MU-PA500B/AM) for 149.99$ for Blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k (BMPCC). Right out of the box, it was formatted to ‘OSX extended’ using the camera itself. Testing/video recordings were done for one minute only and it did pass all codecs/modes/max fps (including 120fps), except Lossless RAW (which is recorded in DNG) at 60fps for both UHD 3840x2160 and 4KDCI 4096x2160. See attached picture for more details.
This SamsungT5 SSD can record excess of 880Mbps which is manufacturer’s stated data storage/recording rate for ProRes 422HQ, 3840x2160 at 24fps.
* Price, you decide if it is right. (You can get 1TB internal SSD for same price too)
* Lightweight and half the size of regular SSD.
* Comes with USB 3.1 and USB C adapter cables.
* Power consumption is just 4 watts (0.8A at 5vDC) in comparison to 6 watts (1.2A at 5vDC) by other Samsung 860 EVO V-NAND 500Gb internal SSD.
* Warms up fast when recording at higher resolution at 60fps continuously for more than 5-10mins.
* 8 out of the 10 times, Bmpcc camera refuses to recognize the drive, especially when both are booted up ‘plugged in’ together. Solution is to plug it in only after the camera is powered up first.
* USB 3.1 to iMac computer data transfer speed is approx. 400-500mbps.
UPDATE October 2019 (see 2nd update picture with red note):
Above review was for older/original firmware 5.2 of the BMPCC 4K camera. Good news is that Samsung T5 now can record ALL new formats (as par new Firmware 6.2.1 update :) without any problems.
Note: Bad news is that new firmware allows you to record 120fps in RAW (aka BRAW) and ProRes at 1080p only.
