I want to thank previous reviewers for highlighting issues with Samsung secure software and issues on Mac . So that had me prepared. here is what i did
1) Straight out the box, formatted and partitioned the SSD on mac using the Disk Utility. I created 2 blocks a 450 GB block using APFS secured and 50 GB ExFAT unsecured and named them for easy recognition . I can then set my own password for the secured portion and even store it in Mac keychain if needed
2) Whenever i plug the SSD in Mac , it pops the password check for the APFS partition and mounts ExFAT version without it. I can choose what to mount. Both USB C and USB A work
3) On windows - i plug in an i only see EXFAT drive as expected . Both USB C and USB A work
4) On Ipad Pro 11 inch - i plug in ssd in USB C port and i see the drive i can move files across devices . In older Ipads you need Lightning adapter sold separately by Apple of course and with additional power is needed to mount this SSD . You can use your battery pack to do this
5) On Android phone Oneplus 6 - i enable USB OTG and i can see the device in file manager
6) Then i wanted to see if i can move files and here are the devices i tested it on
a) Mac Book pro 13 2018 using OS Catalina - 60GB file moved in 1 min 30 seconds using USB C
b) Mac Mini 2012 using OS Mojave - 20 GB filed moved in less than 30 seconds - USB C
c)Windows 10 Lenovo laptop - Moved 20 Gb file - Didn't measure time - USB A .. But works effortlessly
d) Ipad - Can move files from SSD and Ipad and vice versa. But i don't see files in camera gallery or any thing created on device. I can see iCloud, Google drive, Box, drop box , One drive etc . So works but Ipad has limitations
e) Android - Can move files from SSD to device and vice versa once USB OTG is enabled. No limitations
So as you can see with just a little effort you can really optimize the way you use this SSD and i would avoid using built in Samsung security software especially for Mac. I am looking for a windows secure software for Exfat portion that also would work on Android .. This is a good SSD and good buy .
Also, the car requires formatting in FAT32 to read and write data. Fortunately, my iMac can do this with its native Disk Utility program but I’ve heard Windows users will require a separate program to formate a FAT32 device over 32GB.
The device uses a USB-C connection. Big plus: the device comes with two connecting cables. One is a USB-C on each end, the other is a USB-C on one end and a USB-A on the other. This means I can leave one in the vehicle and use the other on my computer to update the music and view/erase the videos. And with the large size I don’t do this very often.
This has worked very, very well for my application, and the device seems to be unfazed by the vibration and temperature extremes of being in a car.
** ONE WEEK LATER - AMAZON STEPPED IN**
Now I know that it was THE CABLE THAT DIED but the drive works great - it's still working great but the included USB cable is CRAP! In fact, I thought that two drives within six months had gone bad. Luckily, just before I threw both drives away, an Amazon Rep ON CHAT told me that they would refund the price of the cables and I bought new ones. THE DRIVES ARE FINE. Oh Yeah!!
One negative is the cheap stiff cables... when you connect the drive the cable keeps the drive from lying flat. It doesn’t affect performance or data security... it just looks wonky. They should supply braided cables, which are much more supple. I had to buy two Anker braided cables (about $10).
I wouldn't bother with encryption software... I have yet to see a dependable cross-platform solution. And you definitely run the risk of being locked out of your drive (Mac and Windows are increasingly protective of disk and system permissions).
Whatever you do, DON'T "back up" files and then delete them from the source (leaving only the copy on this drive). That is NOT backing up... you need a copy of your files on at least two drives at all times to consider them backed up. That said, an SSD like this is a great backup drive (but you might have to use two of these and perhaps some clone software like Carbon Copy Cloner for the Mac).
I also own a blue one of these external SSD drives. They are excellent.
