I also like the fact that this monitor has VESA mount, so when used with a monitor arm, it not only saves some extra space from my desk but also raises the monitor be aligned with my line of sight.
It has 3 ports, 2 HDMI and 1 DP, should be plenty for regular uses.
The color gamut is not that great, but it is not bad either. Since I use it mostly for coding and reading, not photo or video editing, it is good enough. For people who want to do professional design or media editing, this is probably not the right choice.
The auto-detection of video input source simply DOESN'T WORK. I have to struggle with the tiny joystick button at the back to set it to the correct input source. It is also annoying that it won't display anything from the MBP when it boots up unless I open the laptop to display something the built-in screen at the same time first. Not sure if it is a driver issue or what. Also the built-in menu of the monitor doesn't display unless the monitor has valid signal from an input source. Overall, the usability is subpar.
My other concern was how well this upscaled games because my video card cannot play all games at full detail in 4k. Running at 1080p, the games I tested didn't look too bad, the quality was better than I normally see. I can also adjust the sharpness to further refine the picture. Note that I used the Display Port connection.
There is some light bleeding at the two bottom corners, but it's very muted so I have no issues with it. My monitor came free of dead pixels. I avoided LG this time since my last 2 monitors from them had dead pixels, so I was very happy to not see any here.
Finally, the Freesync implementation works really nice. My other gaming monitor (LG), has Freesync support, but it doesn't seem to work. I experience tearing and frame rate slowdowns despite Freesynce being enable in both AMD's software and on the monitor. This monitor has no such issues. Display is fluid and void of tearing with vsync disabled. I did have some games detect the refresh rate at 30hz which obviously killed performance. Once I got the refresh rate up to 60hz, the games became extremely fluid and responsive. Overall, I'm really pleased with this purchase. Wasn't expecting such a good screen for the price.
4K Solves problem of multiple windows for different apps and web sessions. Can easily get 2 full sized windows with room at top or bottom for Hangouts and a couple apps/utilities or 4 full sized windows if I ever have to (full sized on a 1080 screen). The extra room also makes it easy and conformable see and managed popups for errors or notifications, just feels less crowded in general.
HDMI 2 is the 4K 60hz input (documented in guide) and Displayport works well too but using HDMI for now. The text is sharp and I like the size and scaling. Was tempted to get a 28'' 4k but glad I did not. I use a 27'' 1440p monitor for gaming desktop and didn't want to set a higher scaling in Windows 10 and lose the real estate I gained.
+ Colors are bright, pop, and add extra life to whatever you are viewing. Previously had a monitor from 2010 and I thought that was good. Big noticeable difference.
+ Minimalist, clean profile, thin bezel.
+ Monitor has a headphone jack which is nice for the times I want to use my headset without having to plug my speakers in and out of my PC. Good for console play like Switch or PS4.
- Cant adjust monitor height, what you see is what you get with the stand.
Usage: Daily office use, video production, and gaming are all great with this monitor. If you are content with 60hz @ 4k, then this is the monitor for you. Anything above that you are going to have to pay premium (HDR, 120hz+, etc) and you need the appropriate computer specs.
I would only upgrade from this monitor if I wanted to pay the extra premium listed above and could benefit from it as mentioned. The only minor issue I have with the monitor is that you can't adjust the height, otherwise I don't see how this monitor could get any better. 5/5.
Top reviews from other countries
To the more serious review: The TL;DR is I truly think this monitor is amazing for the price point. The color, the quality, viewing angles, etc, all meets or exceed expectation. The only problem comes when you have to switch channels (regularly), and it's always a bit of hassle + sometimes doesn't work until unplugged and plugged again.
I can only speak to my own experience, but I'd wager if I didn't have to switch channels on a daily basis (work laptop to PS4 and PC), this is an easy 5 star for me. People pick on minor problems in review, but the fact is almost all monitors have quirks, and as long as they get the job done with quality exceeding its price point, it should be a 5 star. The new version I got also seems to have a solid power cable that has no problem staying in - I've seen older reviews mentioning that problem.
I've used 4k monitors since 2016 and churned through 4 different 4k ones. I can say the quality on this one is amazing for its price. And if I had a hard time finding something like this in the US - usually much cheaper electronics than Canada, it's a great deal. (I live and work in US now, but come back home to Canada once in a while)
With all that said, I have to give it a 4 star because the problem I experience isn't a simple quirk such as their "single menu button / stick" design which makes interacting a bit more annoying. The problem is often times, when I switch channels away from my macbook pro / work laptop to PS4, I cannot switch it back successfully - it's just black and hops to different channels after a lil bit. The fix I found, NOT ONLY requires unplugging / replugging the cable, but have to be a DIFFERENT USB port on the laptop. Such a weird bug, and I'm glad I found a "relatively" quick solution which I don't mind doing on a daily basis - replugging the laptop usb isn't much work. But this degrades my trust in the monitor working properly over long term, and worry for others who experience similar problems may not have as an easy of a fix as I do.
If this ever stop working, I'd drop it straight down to a 1-3 star depending on when, but for the time being, not only is it a 4 star for me, I'd say it's close to a 5 star even with the issue I have to deal with on the daily basis.
I am not using it for gaming or even for watching video: it is being used for internet, word processing, e-mails, banking. No gaming, so not sure how "gaming mode" helps, but it says it has a gaming mode.
The screen size (32") is great, IMO. I own another Samsung UHD monitor 28" (I think it is the same model just a step smaller), have had that one for several years without problems.
What could be better (but for the price maybe not?) is better contrast and/or brightness. I can't tell exactly what it's lacking but it is likely missing some features of the higher end (much more expensive) monitor I am using at work.
Overall, I think this is a decent deal. If you absolutely need perfection then save some more and go for a higher end monitor.
You have to adjust settings a little to get it to look perfect but it's bright and clear.
One person wrote a review that it's not a 60 hz monitor, but 30 hz. It IS a 60 hz monitor, however if you have an OLD HDMI cable that doesn't support 4k at 60 HZ, that's your problem. Make sure to get a cable that supports 60 hz or use display port. I know, you're thinking but the cable looks the same, trust me, inside it's not supporting all the required channels for the bandwidth of 60 hz at 4k.
