After doing a lot of online research I settled on the Samsung. I chose it for its display quality and also liked the physical design of the monitor. I purchased this cable to connect it to the laptop: Accell B143B-003J UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 Cable.
Having done all the research before purchasing this monitor I was aware of the "wobbly" stand issue. I have found that it's not a "deal breaker" for me. Although at this price it should be better designed. My monitor stand came slightly "skewed". You can see in the photo it's not lined up with the monitor(sorry for the bad phone pic). I spent a little time "bending" it to a more aligned position. Now the stand is basically plastic, but the piece on the monitor where the stand attaches is metal and I was able to bend it manually. Overall the display is very light and may require some additional support(velcro, etc.) to make it more stable.
On to the thing that really matters, the display. It's really good. Images are rendered beautifully and text, graphics, etc. are crisp. Videos streamed are high quality and definition. Honestly, it's better than the much higher priced Apple offerings and best of all, no annoying glare. I have it set at the middle setting in the "display resolution scale" which is a happy medium for me personally.
Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and would prefer to have these at my work place over the Apple monitors also, but alas, that's the company's money to spend;) In conclusion, this monitor would be a 5 star if it had a better, more stable designed base and maybe offered a few USB ports in the mix.
I just wanted to do an update to this review as I've recently purchased another U28E590D monitor recently. I've always planned to have a dual monitor workstation and unfortunately a few months ago a bug got into my original U28E590D monitor and died right in the center of the screen! It's a really small bug and the monitor is still completely usable, but my eye always tends to focus right on. I have no clue how to get rid of it besides trying to disassemble the monitor, but I'd probably end up destroying it.
I received the new U28E590D monitor today and was pleasantly surprised that Samsung took all the critiques about the poor design of the base on the first versions and updated it to a much more stable feeling one. As you can see the physical design of the monitor is the same except for the new version is about a 1/2 inch lower and the stand connection to the monitor is different(sorry, I should have taken pictures of the back before I set everything up, but can't get a good shot now). The monitor still only tilts forward or back, no height adjustments.
The display is the exact same, crisp and clean. Whites are white, and blacks are rich. I have both monitors on the "Samsung Magic Bright" Dynamic Contrast setting which optimizes the display for you working conditions. I've included a few new photos.
With this new update I can say this monitor is well worth the money and it's gone down in price so much since I purchased the original one. I've got to change my rating to 5 STARS now from the 4 I originally rated it.
My warning to early adopters is the following: The only way you are going to get a decent refresh rate of 60hz in games is with multiple video cards. For those of you out there with Nvidia SLI, be warned! Nvidia currently has NO SLI DRIVER support for the 4k resolution. To reiterate, this monitor WILL NOT display 4k in SLI as of right now and it will max out at 1440p. There is a very active Nvidia forum thread with users complaining of this very issue. Nvidia has issued a statement that they know what the fix is and will implement it in the next driver update. However, they did not give an ETA. So, as of right now, this monitor is basically useless for gaming until Nvidia releases the driver update.
I also tested this monitor out on my Retina Macbook Pro. DO NOT buy a 4k monitor for your Macbook Pro until Apple releases 10.9.3 this fall. OS 10.9.2 (current version) does not scale well in 4k and looks absolutely terrible. Don't bother just yet.
*UPDATE* Nvidia driver update 337.61 does not fix the SLI issue with this monitor. The max resolution in SLI after installing 337.61 is still 1440p. Still waiting for a fix.
*UPDATE 2* It has occurred to me that the way I worded my review makes it seem like this monitor does not work with SLI at all. If you use this monitor with HDMI it WILL work with SLI at 4k however it will not go above 30hz. The vast majority of people that purchase this monitor AND have multiple video cards will be using the DisplayPort connection. 30hz simply isn't fast enough for gaming. Sorry for any confusion and I hope this clears everything up. I will update one last time when Nvidia releases the fix.
*UPDATE 3* Some people have messaged me and said that their 780TI cards get the native resolution of this monitor while in SLI. I honestly don't know why these cards work but others do not. The fact remains that there is something wrong and Nvidia has confirmed that the next driver update should resolve the issues that most users are experiencing. Purchase at your own risk until Nvidia releases this patch. Once again, I will update this review when these drivers are released and I have confirmed they do in fact resolve my issues.
*FINAL UPDATE* Nvidia beta driver 337.88 came out today (5/26/14) and it resolves the issues I point out above.
Only real negative is that the monitor has a fixed mount point on the bottom and does not provide a VESA mount, so I can't use a third partner monitor stand or arm without an adaptor. Even with the adaptor, you can only mount the monitor in landscape mode. To get around this I have a second ASUS monitor that I can rotate to view large documents.
Since Samsung clearly intends this monitor to only be used in landscape mode, I'm still giving it five stars -- it does what it was designed to do very well.
