Said that, I have to tell you that the NX1 from Samsung is the best camera I have seen in my life for the type of work I do.
My prior Nikon was great until we got robbed at home and lost all my lenses, lights etc together with my Canon, Sony etc. Then, I was in a budget and in need to replace my equipment to keep my job. I read so much before jumping on this and was even scared in some degree. The main argument against this camera was Samsung itself since they put in standby the entire NX line despite they achieved the best performance on its kind and left stranded many pro-customers that moved into this brand. Perhaps they expected more people form CANON/NIKON to move into their NX line, and did not understand it takes time to access a market so used to some brands. It is built with loyalty and that is exactly what Samsung broke by putting the NX line in standby.
However, the features and quality of the images produced by the NX1, are so overwhelming. Just to talk about one, many DSLR claim to produce videos as well. But if you are familiar with CANON or SONY camcorders you will know what I am taking about when I say most DSLRs fail short on video production. It is true that DSLRs are cheaper than professional camcorders but it is also true that they are way behind their capabilities (way more than just the noise of their autofocus systems)... until the NX1.
With this camera, and its most recent firmware, I can do everything I was capable to do with my stolen CANON and SONY camcorders as well as on my Nikon DSLR. All in the same device and lenses while keeping all in my budget.
Samsung provides many NX lenses, some prime very fine and they are more accessible than before. For video production, you may need only the 16-50 mm OIS PZ and the 18-200 mm OIS lenses, covering short-range and high quality shots as well as large range shuts, all with OIS and digitally stabilized in-camera results. With the 15-50mm PZ lens, the camera is light enough to be mounted on professional drones as well and stand against the harshest environment. Something my NIKON/CANON and SONY cameras always felt short when using them in Chilean Patagonia (i.e. during strong storms).
Some NX lenses are even waterproof and SAMYANG keep producing optional and accessible prime lenses for the NX line. In many ways the NX1 is ahead of the top brands and is still a great option for professional photo and video production despite the bad decisions made by Samsung. This is a camera that records 6.2K video downscaled into 4K, and 28MP images of RAW files full of data. But as you use it, you will see that it is a game changer on the way you produce your media. You can keep your production steps from RAW to post-production in Lightroom/Premiere etc, but this camera has all the needed processing power and features to produce a close to final product in-camera and in no time. Sure, we can keep our post-processing steps from RAW files, but "the future is here". A lot of the price we pay for a professional camera is due to the software it carries inside and we neglect when using RAW. Brands like SONY have produced great firmwares that are on the path of bringing the power to produce quality pictures in-camera, and shortening the post-production time.
On this quest, the NX1 is ahead and by far. It is IMO the best option for photo and videography in a single device, with an accessible price and fully loaded with features that reduce post-processing time even on the hardest conditions. I can shoot an entire session in a glacier with a single battery.
If for you the brand of your camera is not as important as your clients or the quality of your media, you are starting on a budget but need a professional product, you are flexible and embrace technology with new ideas and features, then the NX1 may be the camera you are looking for.
Using the Pro quality setting, there's also no detectable noise up to 1600 ISO. And I found with this setting, there's no need to turn off the in-camera sharpness - the setting eliminates the aliasing and moire.
Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015 now natively supports the h.265 video codec (no need to convert it to ProRes or h.264), and it's an amazing codec. The video quality with this codec is leagues better than the h.264 - less artifacts, preserves more detail - and the file sizes are smaller. So basically, you're getting ProRes quality, at a smaller file size.
I'm coming from a Canon 70D, with a ton of primes, and this Samsung puts it to shame.
If you're purchasing this camera, purchase the 16 - 50mm f2.0 - 2.8 lens with it. It's razor sharp and detailed, even wide open at its widest setting, and the auto focus on it works perfectly.
Great still image quality with 28 Megapixel. I am not a pixel peeper and wish that this camera was closer to 20 MP so we could get better low light performance. Crisp/sharp images in decent lighting with nice bokeh using a S series lens. 4K and UHD video is fantastic very comparable to Panasonic GH4. The video autofocus is faster than the GH4 in decent light and also tracks subjects better. With the latest firmware update (v1.22 when writing this review) makes autofocus and exposure in video a cinch (especially in shutter priority with the shutter set at 1/60 when shooting in 30p) I absolutely love it!
The H.265 codec is a bugger and it is not very fun to transcode to h.264. The best software I have found to transcode is DVDFab 9 (with the little monkey icon wearing a crown); you get the best image quality from that software. Then you can pull your footage into Premiere Pro or any other NLE that you use. I wish Samsung would have provided their own NLE like Sony does with Vegas. Where Samsung did a little false advertising was in the low light performance. This camera has fair/good image quality in low-light, but stinks at auto-focusing; even with the back-side illuminated sensor. But it makes sense, since it's a 28 MP camera; the photo cells are not large enough to pull in enough light like the Sony A7s (a 12MP camera with large photo cells).
I would love to see the "mark ii" of this camera with less megapixels so that the APS-C sensor size can capture more light and provide better autofocusing in low-light. The h.265 codec is neat and is supposed to save space, but you end up using more disc space after you transcode all your files to h.264. I don't know if firmware would allow you to switch between h.265 and h.264, but that would be a nice option. This camera blows my Canon 5D mark III out of the water for video, and I find myself turning more to it even for pictures. The ability to export still images from 4K video is awesome.
Hope this helps!
