The Fastest SSD Available Right Now

This SSD was purchased a little over a month ago at another online merchant since it was not available from Amazon.com at that time.

Summary
* Enterprise-class drive (Samsung OEM product)
* M.2 2280 form factor (22 mm x 80 mm... roughly 1" x 3")
* Simple plug-in installation - No cables necessary
* Nearly twice the speed of premium SATA III SSDs

Pros / Performance
Without question, this is the fastest SSD that you can purchase right now. When installed in the M.2 PCIe 3.0 x 4 slot (as the boot drive) of an ASUS Maximus VII Impact board with an Intel Core i7-4790K processor (not overclocked), the Windows 8.1 desktop is available in 8 seconds flat after pushing the power button. It really does seem almost "instant on"... like flipping on a light switch... your mileage may vary however, according to OS and system hardware configuration.

CrystalDisk Mark 3.0.3x64 yielded the following performance (MB/s) for the Samsung XP941:
Sequential = 1019.0 Read / 838.9 Write
Random (512K) = 670.6 Read / 785.9 Write

For the sake of comparison, a 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro installed in the same system produced the following results (MB/s):
Sequential = 550.9 Read / 522.6 Write
Random (512K) = 439.4 Read / 516.9 Write

With respect to purchasing considerations, bear in mind that the ASUS Maximus VII Impact used in the system here is one of the few Intel Z97 chipset boards (others are ASRock Z97 Extreme6 / Extreme6/ac / Extreme9) currently available that have an M.2 PCIe 3.0 x 4 slot, absolutely essential to obtain ultimate performance from the XP941 with its PCIe 2.0 x 4 interface. All other Intel Z97 boards so equipped have an M.2 device slot compliant with PCIe 2.0/3.0 x 2, thereby limiting this SSD to a maximum sequential read speed of about 800 MB/s. On the other hand, most of the recently-released Intel X99 boards come standard with M.2 PCIe 3.0 x 4 slot(s).

Cons
The speedy performance comes at a price that's about 25% higher than premium SSDs currently available on the market.

Not really a con, but device performance is restricted by its PCIe 2.0 interface. (The upcoming Samsung SM951 will have a PCIe 3.0 x 4 interface and support NVMe.)

Other Thoughts
Although some reviews have stated that this SSD has a tendency to become hot, that was not found to be the case in my system. After a series of read / write activity, the surface temperature of the drive was measured using an infrared thermometer; the result was about 2 C higher than the motherboard temperature itself reported by monitoring sensors. (Since this device doesn't have any type of passive heatsink, I'd recommend having good case ventilation however.)

From my perspective, the PCIe M.2 NGFF (next generation form factor) drives will be the future of computing. These devices are small (similar to a stick of chewing gum) and require no extra power or SATA cables. Imagine a motherboard in the future where the "drive bays" will be multiple vertical slots/sockets to accommodate the M.2 "sticks"... simply plug in the drive(s) for your particular configuration. In fact, motherboard manufacturers could even offer accessible sockets on the back I/O shield to plug in M.2 drives that have a protected enclosure (similar to that of USB flash drives widely in use today).

Installed Win7 on Asus X99-A motherboard

I installed 64 bit Windows Home Premium on the Samsung XP941 (256GB) on an Asus X99-A motherboard. No special BIOS settings were required. The trick seems to be in setting up the thumb drive (a thumb drive is necessary for the installation) specifically you need to get the EFI driver into the root directory on the thumb drive. Here's how I did it...
- Download an ISO of the Windows version that matches the product key that came with your installation disk. The links for the ISO files can be found here... http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/ (these are the same links Microsoft help forums direct you to, they're just all in one place here)
- Use this program to transfer the ISO to the thumb drive... http://rufus.akeo.ie/
- Set the Rufus program to "MBR partition scheme for UEFI" and the file system to FAT32, and then run it.
- Open the thumb drive in Windows Explorer and copy the file BootX64.efi in the \EFI\BOOT\ directory on your thumb drive to the root directory.
- Now plug the thumb drive into the computer, restart it, get to the BIOS screen, choose 'Advanced Mode' (F7), go to the EXIT tab, and select "Launch EFI shell from USB drive". If you get a screen with some nonsense about secure boot and a signed driver, just exit that, then select "Load Optimized Defaults" and do "Launch EFI shell from USB drive" again. That should do it.

This is one amazing SSD!

This is one amazing SSD, a truly GB/sec data rates. I am using XP941 with x99 Deluxe from Asus. I had no problems installing W8.1 Pro on XP941 as a primary drive. The product is a bit pricy and an average user does not really need it. Also, the heat dissipation/accumulation is not an issue, as these were designed to be inside compact laptops such as MacBook Air.

Little Beast with Big Results!

I just installed this little beast into Asrock Z97 Extreme6 motherboard running i7 4770k processor and Team Xtreem 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 2666 memory. I'm not a benchmark freak but I can tell you that this is the fastest booting rig I have ever used. The SSD is super tiny which is great. I would also recommend on installing this SSD into a motherboard with Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4) slot to benefit from the speed of this drive.

To use this SSD as a boot drive I used Rufus free software to create bootable USB stick as it will not install directly from DVD and therefore it must be installed from USB stick/drive using UEFI boot option. My computer is running Linux Ubuntu 14.04 but I have tested the system first with installing Windows 7 64bit version and everything worked great.

How to in 10 steps:

1. Get an ISO version of your OS (Windows, Linux, OSX etc)
2. Use Rufus to create USB bootable version of your OS
3. Press F11 immediately when you start your computer
4. Select UEFI with the "Name of your USB" option
5. Install your OS
6. Run some benchmarks
7. Overclock
8. Run some more benchmarks
9. Overclock some more
10. Go brag and post your benchmarks results :)
