It can be your boot drive!

Bought this drive for a new 5960 Asus X99 build. Had to search all over he** and back to figure out how to install Windows 7 X64 on this thing. Needed to make a special Win7 GPT partition bootable USB key and set the right parameters in the BIOS to boot in UEFI mode. Once this was correctly configured and Windows was installed now the drive reads and writes around a 1 Gig a second!
I kept trying to find the MBR hook in the BIOS to show that the drive was connected and working. Turns out that is not how UEFI works as it is BIOS independent. No need for the BIOS to find the boot sector on the drive and hand control to the os. I may not being saying this correctly, but it is bootable.

Placed this in my Gen 3 Lenovo Carbon X1 - works flawless. Not NVMe speeds ( 2015 carbon does not support it ). Was looking at the AHCI version of the SM951 which is specification wise faster but I needed to insure compatibility. The XP941 benchmarks in my machine at 1241MB/s Read and 1091MB/s Write - that is double the Samsung 850 Pro Sata that I had previously.

I regularly use this in my Carbon with 3 VM's running with 4GB ram each for a total of 12GB - my laptop comes with only 8GB of ram - so the VMs share and swap to disk for memory footprints.. I see no performance impact by doing this as a result of the tremendous speed this SSD provides. The only con I have would be I should have waited for the Gen 4 carbon and grabbed the NVMe version of the 950 Pro - but that has no impact on this product - it was def worth my purchase.

Slower than rotating drives on Windows 10

I get slower speeds with this, copying from a Samsung XP941 to a Samsung 850 evo on Win 10 than I get copying on the same machine with two very old rotating drives. And there's no support and no help. Now I have to open up the server, return the two Samsung pieces of junk, and re-think the whole process and not have my new home server running for another week or two while I find drives that will actually work.

Update 3-20-16: Upgrading to three stars because on large files (sequential writes) it is very fast. Copying from a Samsung 850 EVO to this drive, I copied a 4 GB file in about 3 seconds. It was so fast I couldn't get a good read on the speed but it said something around 1.4GB/s.

I still won't give 5 stars because Samsung doesn't support this so there are no tools, drivers, patches, or anything to fix the slow write with small files. The copy that was slower than rotating disks was the very first write to this disk when it was new so the write would still have been sequential but 1.4GB took over 2 minutes to copy from the 850 EVO; it was just a bunch of smaller files. Samsung Magician software doesn't even recognize this as a Samsung drive. It's in and working now and more trouble than it is worth to replace right now but I recommend avoiding this and getting the 950 or the 950 pro. The very few dollars you save on this are not worth losing all support for the product.

Great little Drive - Blazing fast

Bought this for my HP I7, x360 Spectre which had a 256 GB M.2 Sata ssd. Upgrade took 5 minutes and fit in M.2 slot perfectly. After I installed new drive, Acronis found it and I was able to clone old drive but there were problems. Clone went without a hitch but could not get the extra free space because of way HP partitioned drive so I ended up re-installing Windows 10, then I restored the windows partition from backup.

Drive speed is as posted and maybe just a little bit faster, Windows 10 optimizes SSD no need to use Samsungs software. Giving 4 stars because OEM does not work with Samsung's Magician software. When copying files this little monster gets hot, but fan in laptop blows over it keeping it cooler than in an enclosure.

I wanted to buy the 950 Pro NVME from Samsung but after reading reviews I did not know if it would work with August 2015 model I7, HP x36 Spectre. If anyone had success let me know. When price goes down a hundred bucks I will probably buy the 950 Pro because it will run cooler and use less power.

Item was not x4 more like x2. Also had issues with the stability of the drive - lots of OS crashes as I chose it as my main OS drive. Could not contact Samsung for support so I had to return it. I'm giving it 3 stars because for the first week it seemed to work fine. Then problems came. Case has 7 fans so no issues with heat. The place where the motherboard has the m.2 slot is in an open area with nothing over it or next to it.

It's nice to have an on-board SSD and this one works like it should however I simply need to learn more about the M.2 itself as I was disappointed that this drive can not be used to boot from and so far I can't even see it in BIOS. It's also a bit pricey and in retrospect I would have selected a cheaper item that I could just plug into a PCIe slot.

I'm still looking for an M.2 that provides that "up to 10 Gb/s" unless the usual speed of a standard SATA III falls into that category.

Works very well, fast and bootable. Watch out for what you lose on your motherboard. I lost a few sata connections and my esata. I had a PC with an LSI sata board with raid 0 SSD setup and Samsung m.2 is faster and there is no initialization delay on boot up like the LSI board caused.

This paired with a Angelbird PX1 PCIe x4 adapter for PCIe M.2 SSDs are amazingly fast on Apple Mac Tower 5.1. It's noticeably faster than Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM). It's ridiculously faster than a spinning HDD.
