Set in a small German village, a bloody game of cat-and-mouse ensues between a young, straight-shooting police officer and a cross-dressing villain with a large sword and a predilection for beheadings.

I made thru to the guy in the white dress going to grandma's house. That did it for me. If there is some kind of message about being in the closet or being unsure of your sexual preference, this is a weird way to get the message out. If this is a movie about a nut case with a sword, well I don't buy it. If this is a movie about a confused cop, I might go along with that. Other reviewers have remarked on the cop's lack of professionalism. I'd like to talk about the people in the town. Where are they? A dozen dogs barking their heads off and not one person comes out of their house to see what's going on. A lot of noise of breaking branches and garden stuff, then a woman screams. No one comes to see what's going on? The cop is wandering around with a powerful flashlight and not one person even moves their curtain to see who's out there. The whole thing is silly.
A shape-shifting cross-dressing psychopath wielding a samurai sword cuts a bloody swath of carnage through a small German village in this surreal mix of violence, sexual desire and dark comedy that recalls early David Lynch. To go from here and tell you what this was about or why it was about is very difficult. I was never a fan of David Lynch and this odd movie was really odd. I get that it is a shape shifter and a cross dresser but its purpose was never really explained, did he have a crush on the young cop? I'm using the term it because I believe it is a werewolf, I think. Was he just on a killing spree? I don't know and if it was said I didn't get it. This is a German movie about a werewolf, cross dressing samurai? I am very confused. I was at sometimes intrigued but still confused. I don't know who to recommend this to or if I should. I did think the dynamic between the young cop and the shape shifter was interesting but needed to be threshed out a bit more.
Wow! Scary! Mystical ! Stupid! A Cop not carrying his weapon? Maybe in Mayberry in the 1960's but not in the 21 century. Why is this idiot on the force in the first place? This pinhead was responsible for all the victims of this lunatic with a sword. I get it, it's a supernatural being and this is a deep horror film. Sure is , if you consider the filmmaker and writer are psychotic. The cop failed in his job from the get go. You don't let the bad guy-natural or supernatural -get the upper hand. As soon as he raise his weapon , in this case a sword, You smoke that bad boy. If you have a friend who likes this movie., get yourself a new friend.
A great film! I had read reviews about this film on a few Horror websites and truly, while it does fall into that genre, it's not what people might expect. There's so many layers to this film that I would recommend watching at least twice. Know that if you watch the DIGITAL version however, it is edited in several scenes that does change the viewer's experience. Invest in a hard copy of either DVD or Blue Ray and enjoy the extras that come along with it. Even though this is a thesis project of the director, this film speaks highly of the writer/director's skill in crafting this small pocket of a universe created in what could easily be a small town in any country that has access to wilderness nearby. Great film, must see for horror fans who want more from their films than just torture porn.
This is a damn good movie! I really enjoyed it! I actually wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did! ALSO apparently Amazon removed that black censor bar that other reviewers have been complaining about. I did not have one when I viewed the movie, so no need to worry about that nonsense! Yeah this movie was awesome! More of a thriller but thats not a bad thing! The movie is well acted, the cinematography is great, its got good music and just about everything about this movie is excellent! I give it FIVE beautiful decapitations out of FIVE!

Not what I expected at all. A truly odd, thought provoking story. I really didn't expect to like it, but frankly I loved it! It definitely warrants 2 or more viewings to completely understand, but it's worth it.
Though this film may not be the best thing you'll ever see, it is original, it is underrated, and it has one of the best endings I've seen in a long time. If only the rest of the film was on par with it's ending. Still a well made film and a decent watch, not to mention very dreamlike and creepy!
I went into this film blind and it payed off in spades. The film has a palpable, droning eeriness that ties tongues perfectly with this electro-pinkish aesthetic and attitude. It was like having a beautiful nightmare. Der Samurai is astounding in every facet of film making. Pure and inspired. If you love discovering and watching challenging and thought provoking films this is a must buy.
4.0 out of 5 stars“Imagine this scenario:…….” [Der Samurai]

This 2014 German language fantasy slasher type thriller follows timid and shunned police officer Jacob who is trying to capture a wolf that has been terrorising his village but when he delivers a samurai sword to a man in a dress, things become even stranger. This takes about 12 minutes to get to the main story but it feels much longer and falls prey to the ‘modern’ film in two parts format; the first slowish half seemingly drawing out the suspense then the action half but many will simply switch off [lose a *] which is a pity. The film is almost like watching a dream and as such you’re interpretation of this will depend very much on you’re mood when watching it and how far you can ’get into it’. I interpreted the film as someone coming to terms with their repressed sexuality and releasing their angst; the hunting of the wolf being a metaphor [but what do I know?]. The single disc goes straight to audio set-up [5.1/2.0] then plays a collage of film clips before going to main screen set-up offering play, chapters, special features [director&cast interview, making of, Trailer], set up [English subtitles on/off, 5.1/2.0, directors commentary] and trailers [choice of 8]. Rated 18 this has some male full frontal nudity and bloody action violence [but not as much as you might expect]. Keep watching after the credits seem to end, there is an end scene before the disc starts auto-playing the trailers.
Utter nonsense! The director needs to see a psychiatrist if this kind of stuff is going through his head! HMV wanted £20 for this movie I bought it from here for about £6. Even that was too much for this movie, I would have wanted my money back if I had payed that much!
