I bought this to go with an old Canon Digital Rebel XT and so far it has worked great. I shoot raw+jpg and have only put a couple hundred photos on it so far and it still shows as having room for 999 more. For reference, a 1GB card can hold around 120 raw 8MP photos (without the jpg). File transfer from the card to PC feels slow for today's standards, but is faster than my other cards (they are 20 MB/s).

Thankfully I can edit my original review. That review slammed these cards because of apparent misleading capacity rating. When formatted in my old DSLR camera, I originally got 2GB instead of the claimed 16GB - but upon reviewing my camera's spec sheet, it turns out that the camera can only handle up to 2GB and it formats any sized card to 2GB. Upon realizing my mistake, I reformatted these cards in a much newer DSLR and got the claimed 16GB. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Since then I used one of the cards to shoot 660 perfect slide copies and used less than 2 GB of space.

So, my original review was a mistake and a cautionary note to everyone to check whether your device can actually accommodate a card this size. So far, terrific CF cards.

Good CF for IDE replacement

I'm using this CF card paired with a CF to IDE adapter as a replacement system drive for an Apple PowerMac G3 running OS 9.2, for which it works nicely. The computer identified the CF right away as a writeable and bootable drive, and there was about 15GB usable after formatting. When compared to the original 6GB HDD the computer now boots faster, applications load faster, and there's no drive noise!

Purposely chose a card with high reviews since I depend on my photos professionally. Spent an entire day shooting. The next day I attempt to upload my photos only to find that the card was toast. Tried the card back in the camera and was greeted with a card error. An entire days worth of work wasted.

I wonder if SanDisk began shipping an inferior product after establishing good reviews. Check out the other 1-star reviews who all encountered my same issue.

Look elsewhere if your photos actually mean something to you.

Extremely dependable and durable CF cards

We have and use dozens of SanDisk Ultra CF cards. They are dependable and durable and rarely do we ever experience a problem. We use them to capture images in our school portrait business. Some of our cameras have dual memory card slots, with an SD card as the second card slot. We use the SD card as a back-up to the SanDisk CF card. Because we have the back-up memory card always recording in the background, we are still using SanDisk CF cards, some of which we purchased in 2007, 2008, 2009, . . . Although there are no moving parts, you would think that the many in-and-out insertions into the camera and into card readers would be a wear issue. But these SanDisk CF cards just keep on working. We would not use these older, much-used cards without the second card back-up feature, but they just do not fail. So we continue to purchase SanDisk Ultra CF cards as we continue to grow.

Formatting Errors, in Camera & Laptop

I ordered this card 7/4/17, here in 2 days with prime. That night I thought I'd get it installed in the camera and format the card for later use. I have an Olympus C-8080 a nice camera that uses X-D cards or Compact Flash cards. I had it installed and turned on to format the card in the camera, what I always have done for either CF or XD cards since new. It asked to format, I pushed yes and proceed to seem to be formatting the CF card. After about 30 seconds it comes up on the screen Error can not format card??? so I thought maybe I didn't get it pushed in all the way, like most people I was easy to push it into the slot so not to damage the pins in the bottom as always. so I removed it and pushed it in and made sure I felt that it was completely in correctly and shut the door and tried to go thru formatting the card again, after 30 seconds again comes up error formatting can not be completed? 2 times in a roll. So I got out my CF card reader and plugged it into my laptop thinking yeah maybe I should have done this to start with maybe. Got it to come up and it asked me if I wanted to format the card, I clicked yes and 15 seconds later, card can not be formatted, used safe to remove drive on laptop. reinstalled it back in the USB and tried again, again no luck, by now I'm getting pissed and thought ok lets get out the old SanDisk Extreme 8GB CF card I have had for 10 years, first I tried my camera and it didn't want to work??? so I uninstalled it from the camera and made sure to push a little harder and closed the door and started to try formatting card, good luck, came right up asked to reformat pushed yes and it reformatted card as should. So right then I seen it wasn't my camera and took some pictures put the CF card in the USB reader and everything worked fine. I don't know are the Extreme the right cards to be using from SanDisk? maybe, anyway sending this 8GB card back and going to purchase the 32 GB card of this Ultra and see if it might be just the 8GB cards are having problems. I guess we'll see. Anyway I wouldn't waste my time on the 8GB card, one of the reason I did was because they marked the price off to just $12. bucks from $16 so I went for it. I guess I'll see what the 32GB card brings when it gets here, hopefully good luck, but I know it isn't my camera for sure.

Works Perfectly with my Canon Digital Rebel XT

I ordered a few of these to pair with my Canon Digital Rebel XT (also known as Canon 350D, I believe) and they work perfectly out of the box. The only caveat is I recommend for these older cameras to not format memory cards larger than 8gb in the camera itself because the camera automatically caps it at 8gb. This is a camera issue rather than a memory card issue, as they just didn't have memory sticks this large back then I guess. As long as you don't reformat the card in the camera itself, however, you will be able to fill up the card's entire 16gb as expected. Read write speeds are also excellent. The memory cards do not come with the little clear plastic cases for protection, though. So if you are rough on your memory cards in travel then maybe order a small case that holds a few of these cards. Otherwise, if you are pretty gentle with your memory cards then not having a case should be just fine. Just don't put them in a dirty or dusty compartment in your bag as there is a small chance that the dirt can clog the connection socket.

I use this card in a Canon EOS 7D. The Ultra cards are not as fast as the Extreme range, but perfectly adequate for my use with this camera. 8fps shooting RAW and JPG and I can get a few decent bursts before the buffer fills. I tend to shoot portraits so that doesn't tend to be an issue. I have Sandisk cards for my other bodies and can't fault them. They are a fine and reliable brand and I'd recommend them to anybody and everybody.

Faster than the previous Ultra cards

The older 30MB/s cards were pretty good for normal day to day use, not super fast but likely good enough for many users (ie not slow either) I have a few of those around and they are reliable and satisfactory in use.

This newer SanDisk is updated to 50MB/s (but take note for read times only)
Testing (raw files transfer from PC to card) in a USB 3.0 Card reader I got:

Write: 27MB/s
Read: 48MB/s

So that's in line with the makers specifications (this can vary depending on USB and card reader)
The previous generation of Ultra CF cards were reading at about 29/30MB/s, write times were about 20MB/s

A step up in speed (more so for the read times) In camera buffer clearing times were improved. It's not as fast as the extreme cards (60MB/s read and write) but still far from sluggish. Users with pro level bodies and doing lots of burst shooing will probaly go for the UDMA 7 Extreme PRO super fast cards. Write speed is now roughly in line with the older Extreme III 30MB/s (previous Ultra model before this was somewhat slower)

For 90% of users this is fast enough. Take note though the 4GB version is only rated to 25MB/s. Most cameras (even older ones) can take at least 8GB, do check though to make sure. 8Gb or over is the one to go for.
Good product, the long warranty adds confidence, not had to use it to date.

I have used, San Disk cards before for my Digital cameras. (Mainly: SD. for many years, and have always found them to be very reliable and trustworthy compared to the cheaper options tried!) I would always recommend the Ultra version, as you get faster speeds and most important: Reliable transfer of data and longevity of Insertions/Removals from card readers & cameras. (Obviously they have better Gold plated contacts, than the rivals) I have been using this 4GB. card for data transfers a lot lately, in a PCMCIA adaptor and with my other purchase; The excellent Integral CF card reader. And have after extensive use found both to be Totally reliable and Excellent value for money!

I would like to mention, please take care when: Inserting the CF card, as it has 50 minute connection pins. (2x25) These can be easily damaged if "Forced" into place, especially at an angle. (Insert "Gently" and it will last for many years!)

I have used SanDisk memory exclusively for many years and have never had a failure. But I did recently lose two old, 4GB SanDisc Compact Flash cards. I was going to get like-for-like replacements, but in the many years I've had them, the price has fallen dramatically and the write speed increased significantly, so I bought a single 50mb/s, 16GB card, and it's great! I have an old Canon EOS 50D and this card holds in excess of 600 RAW files, writes quickly and has worked flawlessly. Highly recommended.

With the rapid expansion of SD cards into the market place, CF cards are becoming obsolete.

I still use them for a canon 5d mk2 which whilst dated, offers me over 20 mega pixels in a full frame format and therefore has some value. Sadly it doesn’t accommodate SD cards and therefore I have no choice but to purchase this item or an often unreliable CF card acting as an SD adaptor.

SanDisk produce a quality product which provides me with exactly what I want, relatively fast processing of data and certainly quick enough for what is relatively slow by modern standards data processing on my 5d. There are cheaper products on the market but as CF cards require a degree of precision in terms of physical manufacturing to ensure that the pins does not get damaged when changing cards, I prefer to pay a little extra for better quality.

I have deducted one star as I feel that these cards could be cheaper, however, it wouldn’t surprise me if they continued to get more expensive as they are likely to become increasingly scarce.
