As a graduate student, I had access to all kinds of public computers -- in labs, classrooms, libraries, etc.
Often, instead of lugging a laptop around, I just carried this thumb drive around my neck.
There are LOTS of portable versions of software that you can keep on a drive like this. It's especially helpful to have portable Firefox so that all my bookmarks and passwords were there, no matter which public computer I used.

I did lots of presentations for class and used LibreOffice installed on this drive in stead of PowerPoint. It worked SO MUCH BETTER than my other students! I mean - waaaaay - better. While other students were struggling, I just plugged this drive into the teacher's computer, which was already working with the video projector and my presentation worked. No cables. No lost media files.
VERY IMPORTANT TIP: back up your thumb drive often! These are easy to lose.
ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT TIP: use a password vault. (I use LastPass and Trucrypt) These are very easy to lose and it could be disastrous if somebody got all your passwords.
A few points about this item:
* It's not small. You can get ones about 1/3 this size. But, I like a bigger one, so I won't lose it. If I intended to keep it plugged in somewhere, like a photo frame, I'd get a smaller one.
* It has never failed me. Not one byte of data. That is essential to me.
* I like the slider design. I always lose the little caps in the other designs (but it doesn't seem to matter if you use a cap or not.)
* Some people say it is slow and maybe that's true. But I stream video and music, which seems fast enough.
