What makes the Cruzer unique is the tiny form factor.
I use this in my vehicle's USB port for music, on my Roku to watch my own movies, and anywhere a regular sized dongle is not practical. It's minimalist design is remarkable and you'll probably forget it's there.
1) Ordered Oct 22, arrived Oct 24
2) Ordered four (4), got four
3) Arrived in a rather big box with contents flopping though no visible damage - combined with another order
4) Flash Drive includes unmentioned SanDisk SecureAccess software (AES-128bit) that is a little out-of-date. Should be at least AES-256bit and should use FAT32 at a minimum with NTFS preferred. It is a USB2 device.
5) Testing flash drive (Win):
a) root directory has two visible folders (club-application and SanDiskSecureAccess)
b) root directory has two executable files (RunClubSanDisk.exe and RunSanDiskSecureAccess_Win.exe)
c) root directory has a hidden file autorun.inf (can be opened with Notepad if curious)
d) flash drive packaging indicates WinXP, Vista, and 7 are supported as well as Mac OS X v10.5+
e) Mac users needing security are directed to the SanDisk website's SecureAccess page (URL will be censored by Amazon) for download
f) The club application was of absolutely no interest and the associated folders/files were deleted. It is one of those, "Get special offers from SanDisk partners" RPIA's.
g) The SanDisk SecureAccess Quick Start Guide is a PDF located in the SanDiskSecureAccess folder. If the SanDisk SecureAccess process is something that has never been used, this provided guide would be a must to read - it is short.
h) If I recall, correctly, the, unwritten, MAXIMUM, vault size is 4gb which is sufficiently large to hold the contents of one (1) DVD. If compressed (ZIP'd) files are written to the flash drive, it is often possible to squeeze more than 4gb of uncompressed files into the 4gb vault space; however, this is way to subjective to give any "reasonable" percentage since compression depends upon the compression software and the file content being compressed (e.g. video, text, spreadsheet, document, database, etc.).
i) Normally, I delete all of these provided tools. If I change my mind at some future date, I can go to the SanDisk website and download the SecureAccess software. (If there is the curious streak, the older U3 software is also available that is more userfriendly and more out-of-date and does NOT use the "vault" concept. Get both the install and the uninstall software if you think about using it. BTW, you are, of course on your own though the support folks will sometimes answer questions.)
j) If you do use the provided tools, do MAKE SURE the Closing your private vault instructions, on page 8 (English) are followed. The flash like any plug-and-play device will mostly always be unaffected by just yanking from the USB port; however, the more important the information stored, the greater the chance the once-in-a-million "oops" corruption will strike.
k) There is a place on the drive to attach a lanyard, or string, to keep loss at a minimum. I am thinking the cap is a gonner since it does not fit all that securely; however, this comment in no way obviates the intended purpose of the device and how it works. Just doNOT use peanut butter as a place to stick the drive to keep it from getting lost (you are going to have to figure out the reasoning for this comment).
l) Did they work?
It was curious that the thumbnail icon for the flash drives was that for the ClubSanDisk and not the SanDisk SecureAccess when it appeared. It seemed to have a great deal of difficulty in displaying after the longer than expected recognition and driver-installation. Specificially, the autorun.inf was configured for the ClubSanDisk.
I changed my autorun.inf to the following (if you choose to do so, YOU do it at your own "RISK!"):
[autorun]
action=SecureAccess
open=RunSanDiskSecureAccess_Win.exe
icon=RunSanDiskSecureAccess_Win.exe
What does this mean if the icon does not show? Well, you may have to "guess" which drive letter is associated with your flash drive - no biggie; but, rather annoying. For some reason, I got noticably slower access and usage, "IF" I had a USB3 device plugged into one of the available USB2 ports at the same time.
m) Getting the little drive out of the packaging was an interesting exercise in frustration. The first one I could extract "almost" using the cut line indicated on the packaging. The second one required a little more effort since the cap was stuck to the packaging which required major surgery to get the clear plastic unstuck from the cap. The third flash was a little easier to extract from the packaging though the cap did provide a moment! The fourth drive packaging was cut on the bottom end and this seemed to allow easier extraction of the drive and the cap. Also, the
n) Insertion and removal from a powered USB hub; and, the same for other USB ports was reasonably effortless due to the lanyard connector that offered a place to get a grip.
o) The flash drive device is not realy designed, in my opinion, for a lot of insertions and removals from a USB port. I always connect these "cheap" devices to a powered-USB port so any damage done by the device's connector only affects the easily replaced hub and does not damage my computer.
Close, click "eject" ... and ... REMEMBER, it is better to be safe than be the "did it to yourself" victim because the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your tray was not used! A few words of CAUTION, do make sure the intended drive letter for the Flash Drive is the one chosen to be removed!
> According to some reviewers, the Cruzer isn't very fast, but I was pleasantly surprised---it is maybe 5x faster than the Kingston 4G thumbdrive which has been my mainstay for many years.
> This isn't a highspeed device you can use instead of a harddrive for recording streaming 1080 hi-def movies on from an un-buffered source, but it is fine for almost any other purpose. It is probably adequate for playing movies though.
EXAMPLES OF USES
> The harddrive of my vintage Thinkpad (actually the very last IBM Thinkpad) is only 50G. The 32G Cruzer increases my capacity by 50% for only $20, such a deel!---I only which I could buy a 128G Cruzer. It isn't quite as fast as the harddrive, but it is fast enough for me.
> I do not have to remove the Cruzer when I packup my Thinkpad. In effect, I use the Cruzer as a removable/interchangeable component of my Thinkpad.
> The Cruzer is perfect for "installing" your music library in your car stereo system (if you have a USB plug for the purpose), because it is unobstrusive and looks like part of the system.
> This sort of use is the best use of the Cruzer---to be used as supplimental, moveable memory, but not fequently moved. You could use a big stick thumbdrive (at least on a desk computer), but there is always the danger of it being broken off---not a problem with the CRUZER.
INSTALLING/DEINSTALLING
> Some reviews claim that the Cruzer is inappropriate for routine data transfer because it is hard to remove. That's only true if your USB ports are recessed (as on my HP Workstation), but not if the USB ports are flush (as in my Thinkpad). If the ports are not recessed, it is easy to get a good grip on the Cruzer to remove it.
SOLUTIONS
> I use a 3" USB extention on my desktop USB ports to make connections easier with my MP3 player and other small devices, and that works very well with the Cruzer.
> If your USB ports are tight, a little silicon grease may make it easier (and may actually improve the connection) Permatex 22058 Dielectric Tune-Up Grease, 3 oz. Tube
> It would be easy to make a tiny lanyard with a few inches of heavy black fishing line (maybe with a small bead on the end) which would assist in pulling the Cruzer out of recessed USB ports.
CAVEATS
> The tiny Cruzer is easily loosable. Sure, you can attach a lanyard, such as COSMOS 5 pcs Black Long Neck Strap Band Lanyard (36 inch full round length)For Camera Cell phone ipod mp3 mp4 PSP Wiimote ID card badge and other Electronic Devices + Cosmos cable tie with difficulty, but that defeats the purpose. I suggest that for data transfer, you use a larger stick thumbdrive.
> This IS NOT a "keyring/keychain drive" for 3 reasons:
>>> The cap is easy to loose.
>>> The metal loop is too small for a split-ring---which is a good thing because the loop is too weak for the drive to be attached to a keyring.
>>> The drive is so small that your keys and other crap on your keychain are likely to get in the way if inserting the drive
If you want a keyring/keychain drive, buy a larger drive without a detachable cap.

It can be easily lost or it’s cap can be lost easily as well as someone else also stated so I recommend keeping it stored securely when not using.
I bought it to reinstall firmware into a CD changer emulator box plugged into the back of my Honda head unit as the requirements was a memory stick USB2 with max of 8gb and a led indicator. The flash drive failed to do the firmware update but that was not the fault of the flash drive. The CD changer emulator is faulty. I know this as I have the same set up in another car and it works fine when playing stored music on it to that cars head unit.
The flash drive is very quick when loading data onto it from my computer.
The only slow process on this product is a full format but as it is 8gb that is and should be expected.
A very good little memory stick which is nice and short so cannot be broken when plugged in and I found it easy to remove.
Anyway, that is all now in the past - now I have this little baby! It is tiny, and is absolutely perfect for the job. Being so small I don't think I'd have any other use for it but it is nevertheless suprisingly easy to plug it in and out (when transferring music to and from my computer for example), and it does have a cap so it could be carried around if you needed to. I think if I was doing so I would definitely thread a lanyard through the minute loop on the stick, which might be a fiddly job as it is so small, but it is thoughtfully provided.
Now that more and more devices such as televisions and music systems have usb slots, memory sticks as tiny as this become at the least desirable, and in some cases perhaps vital, when ordinary sticks would protrude too far.
I've only copied music onto it, dragging and dropping from my computer's music folder, but it worked a treat and at a decent speed, and it played first time without hitch.
For me, a godsend, and I shall be buying a larger capacity one for my new television when I get it.
This device is TINY! It is perfect for holding information that you don't want on your computer, I'm a student so I use this to keep all my module handbooks on and any other UNI related important documents. I keep this plugged into my computer so bare in mind if you don't store your hidden information in the 'vault' which is password protected people will be able to access them if you do leave it in your laptop.
So basically. Hidden documents/important documents - You must put them in the vault which is password protected and such a handy option. Everything else can just be saved as usual like any other USB, their are many other areas such as registration online as well as, on-line back up which I haven't used yet.
As recommended by others buy this from AMAZON as their are many fakes out there.
