That is still a great amount but there is a reason 1.4 MG of space is taken up with unnecessary programs that cannot be deleted. Every time you insert the Cruzer in a USB port, you get options of installing U3 `Launchpad' and U3 `Smart Programs', of which are `YouSendIt', 'Veoh Web Player', 'Launchpad Tour', 'SignUp Shield' and others. Granted that it is great to have so much space for MP3's, photos and lots of data, but these inerasable programs are a real nuisance. Most of them are too expensive anyway. I'd suggest buying two 4 GB flash sticks as opposed to this one unless you can figure out how to `normalize' this memory stick. The transfer rate is about the same on this as any memory stick. The little metal hoop hook-on is ridiculously flimsy. It would be nice to have a plastic attached hole to affix this to you keychain or something similar. It is nice, however, to not have a cap and I like the slide-able USB connection with an orange LED so you can see that it is on and working. The Cruzer `safely remove hardware' feature is also convenient instead of searching the lower right corner of your monitor for the little icon to `safely remove'. Okay, this is a bit of an off the wall review, but decided it is DEFINITELY worth posting!!

I bought this flash drive to replace my old one that I lost. This SanDisk is a great size, fits nicely on a keychain with keys. The sliding mechanism does operate smoothly, but I found I needed to hold the slider in the out position when plugging it in, or the USB head would want to slide back into the housing. That is the ONLY negative thing I have to say about this flashdrive!

Back to the washer machine.... being the typical male, I forgot to empty my jean pockets one day and this sandisk when for a 57 minute spin through my Whirlpool washer. The wife brings it upstairs and says "sucker!", then throws it on my desk. I let the flash drive sit for a day, plugged it in.......and holy crap, it works just fine!!! Not only does it work as it did when new, the little orange light still functions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars because it lasted the heavy duty cycle in the washer! Without that, I would have gone 3 out of 5 because having to hold the slide mechanism out while plugging it in is a bit of a hassle.

It does its job

I bought this one to replace my previous 2gb Sandisk Cruzer capacity flash drive that I'd lost and it's been 2 years now. Same as the first- it does its job. You plug it in. You put files on it. It keeps them there until you need them. What more do you need?

The included U3 software is nice to have. I've used it before with the previous drive, so it's nothing new to me. It's a nice way to access your files on there. It's also a good safeway to prevent taking it out of the computer before it's fully ejected. Prevents file loss. The retractable connector is is quite the nifty feature to have. No caps to worry about and no worries about it getting bent/disfigured.

My only issue is that sometimes U3 spazzes and won't eject. Usually because the computer is holding the file hostage in its memory. You either need to close the file, if it isn't already, or check your processes and see if the program for the file is still running. If all else fails, I usually just wait it out, depending. If not, I just take it out of the computer after a minute or two to make sure it's done its thing.

I swear by these though. If I had to get another, I'd get one of these again, no doubts about it.

Ok, first of all, I'm not going to tell you how amazing this is or that you would be stupid not to buy it, or anything like that, because honestly, its just a flash drive. It is a good one: it works, and its pretty cheep for a 4 gig, but honestly, why do people make such a big deal about a flash drive?

Anyway, It is just what it says it is. Also, a lot of people who rated it 1 star said that they don't like it because it automatically installs software. well don't be fooled by that because what they don't realize is that thats the driver so that the computer can run the flash drive. all flash drives do that.

My one complaint may be that it doesnt always lock into the open position very well, but it's only a minor issue. I would recommend this flash drive if you need a new one. (It also has a keyring for a keychain, which i know that that's a big deal for some people.)

I do like orange, but...

First off, the device works as expected as far as providing storage. There's really not much it has to do other than provide storage, but props for not failing at that or anything.
The reason for the low score is simple: This device is extremely annoying. The 'white' part on the top you see in the pictures, the slider, is lit up by an internal led to let you know it's working. The orange light is very bright, and very large. There's simply no way to ignore it. Even when the drive isn't being accessed, it pulses the light slowly, letting you know it cares about you. There are tutorials you can find online for removing the led, but who really wants to crack open their flash drive? I've gotten very creative about covering it up using everything from post it notes to permanent marker... but that orange light always shines through. I've had several people at work ask me: "How can you work with that thing blinking?"

Another smaller annoyance is that the device rattles when moved. It comes with a small key chain loop, which doesn't help, but the slide mechanism is also fairly loose, meaning the body wiggles around and rattles when moved. It's not a huge deal when connected, because it likely won't move much, but I've noticed it enough to mention it.

Another review in the 5 star category. I got this used on Amazon. As soon as I got it I took off the u3 software (and formatted the drive): extremely easy and quick. I've been using this every single day for almost a year now with not a single problem. I transfer files between my Mac and a windows machine with no trouble at all.

I run a website server off this (xampplite with apache + mysql), so I can work on my sites from whichever computer I'm at. The data transfer rate is plenty fast for constant refreshing of a webpage which is stored on the flash drive; I've never felt bogged down. When I'm on windows, I even have the write-cache properties set for instant removal of the drive (which slows down in-out data, but lets you pull the flash drive out without clicking all those stupid little bubbles), and I've still never felt it was too slow.

Initially I worried that the drive would physically break because every time you want to use it you have to slide it in and out. But it's held up extremely well. If I upgrade, the first thing I'll look at will be at another sandisk cruzer micro.
