I want to use this for a Dynex digital picture frame I got for Christmas, and I just wanted to throw all my pictures in the root directory so that they were "shuffled" that way.
After much testing, the conclusions were between 150-300 files in the root directory, depending on the size of the files. I'm not sure if this is a security feature or what, but to me it is just plain annoying when I just want to throw all my pictures on there for my digital picture frame.
Solution 1: Format this card to be NTFS. The problem with that is that it will not work in most digital cameras (it is recommended that if you use this with a digital camera, that you format it INSIDE the digital camera itself), and it won't work in most digital picture frames, which includes mine, the Dynex DPF7A picture frame.
Solution 2: Create folders in the root directory of the SD card and store the pictures in separate folders. I have one folder for "Family Pics", one for "Friends Pics" and one for "Random Pics", etc. This is obviously the best way, because then you can have many, MANY pictures inside of one file and wah-lah, it works.
I prefer solution 2, and I will update in a few months after I have used this card daily (as in, Monday-Friday at my work for the digital picture frame), and will let you all know how it turns out!
I shopped around and found this great deal that seemed to be too good to be true. A 2GB memory card for only 16.99. I looked into this through every customer review on the amazon web site and through the sellers profile and the customer reviews on their site. Still a little skeptical, I figured it was a chance I could take for such a great price. I was amazed when I recieved the memory card and found out just how many pictures I could take without having to stop and erase the bad ones or save the good ones to the computer before taking more. Some of the reviews have said it holds 1500 pictures, but I haven't needed to take quite that many just yet. I didn't really get the camera for the video option, but so far I have captured almost a half hour of good quality video at one time. This has turned out to be the best deal I have found in a very long time. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive memory card to play around with for personal use and more.
While I use DVD-R for long-term archival storage I mainly use these 2GB cards in my SanDisk e140 MP3 player and my Nikon Coolpix L5 digital camera mainly because they use the older SD card standard which is limited to 2GB anyway. But then I consider the e140 the best MP3 player I've ever used (the SD card slot and NiMH AAA battery support were huge considerations, along with a dot-matrix screen) while the Nikon has 5x optical zoom which, sadly, isn't found on the newer models.
But this is a review of SD card memory. And it's here where I can admit freely that I've tried many brands and noticed that some SD cards are faster than others. This "lag" is very noticeable in the Nikon camera. I've found that the SanDisk cards offer the right amount of performance for the dollar. When used in my MP3 player they don't draw much energy so I get a lot of playtime from charge to charge.
I'm sure anyone can find higher-capacity cards which offer less money per GB. But, for high quality 2GB SD cards, these are winners. And they appear faster than the Kingston and PNY cards.
I've never had trouble with a SanDisk 2GB card in any of the Canon cameras I've used (multiple models). I can't say that about other cards.
The SanDisk is reliable, I've experienced no compatability issues and the SD format is my favorite. I've taken extra cards on vacation, just in case, but even though I take lots of photos I never have filled up a card (I regularly upload photos to the computer, though, except when on vacation). If you shoot a lot of video I suppose you could fill a card but you'll probably go through a lot of batteries first.
Only complaint is that store clerks don't seem to understand when you ask for the SanDisk brand. I had a Target clerk who got annoyed with me and repeatedly pointed to other brand cards when I asked for SanDisk (apparently she thought the SD format was an abbreviation for the brand but the SD cards are sold by several manufacturers).
