The Bad: retractable connector would not lock in the open position using the switch; tinkered with it for a while and finally just pulled connector by hand and it locked. Inserted drive and windows 10 wouldn’t recognize it. It did get very hot at idle. Poor quality control for a $131 super premium drive. Returned for refund.
"I am Steve from SanDisk® Global Support Team. I understand your concern. There can be various reasons which may have caused the drive to behave this way and we would have been glad to assist you towards a best possible resolution. However, as you have already returned the product"
Thanks for the reply Team Steve! Please note, I purchase your products frequently. I almost always put a standard speed 128 GB in the back 3.0 usb port on any system I set up, or retune, for backup or boot from usb, in Windows 10. I pick these up for $25 to $30. The speed difference for the relatively small loads I transfer is not really noticeable in everyday use. I bought the 400 mb/s spec 256gb drive as a gift to myself, and of course to show off a new toy to my friends. When it arrived not functioning (plug not locking open), my confidence in a long useful life was not high. The high heat level in standby mode was another concern.
Immediately after opening the product and seeing the problems, I went to your website, and reviewed the entire site including the community section. Nothing was helpful. Since I couldn’t format or even scan the drive, my options were very limited. I reviewed several of my go to websites for reliability at delivery and life of product reviews, and the percentage was not good; the consensus was: If it works great, if it doesn’t send it back.
Based on the product costing double or more compared to a standard speed drive, and my trouble shooting time at $75 per hour, you can see where my decision to bail out after three hours comes from.
Look closely at the star ratings. Almost 4 out of 10 buyers are not rating this super premium priced toy a five. Time to start earning those 5's.
Con: runs VERY HOT, even when idle (not being used by PC). Since heat ultimately degrades electronics, am very concerned. ok so far, wonder about multi year life?
Con: spring loaded slide for connector. Tried to use on a USB socket that was tighter (but smaller) than usual, it simply would not go in, spring was too strong. It did not make contact that the pc could use. Utterly useless when it won't connect to PC.
Update: I lowered the rating to 4 stars because when I tried loading a large number of folders to the flash drive, it indicated "full" long before it was actually full. I had only loaded about 50 GB, so something was wrong. I did a "full" reformat from exFAT to NTFS, not just a "Quick" format, and the full reformat seemed to fix the problem. If the problem comes back, I'll update this rating to a lower rating and ask for a refund. I had the previous silver version of the SanDisk Extreme Pro for a couple of years and had zero problems with that one, so hopefully this was just a glitch. If you have to reformat this drive, I strongly recommend doing a "full" reformat to NTFS.
Once up and running, using ATTO for benchmarking I benchmarked all 4 of the drives. Remember, these are either hardware RAIDS (2 of them), the SSD Boot Drive and the Flash Drive. I was very surprised with the results rather then talk about which one was the fastest, I did a screen grab of the winner. If you look carefully, you will see it's drive C:, which of course is the Boot Drive on this USB Win2Go install. This Flash Drive has to be a record holder I think.
