DOA - Does not work at all

I have been a fan of SanDisk products for a long time. Have an SD-to-USB adapter whose printing has nearly worn off from all the use. A desktop multi-card adapter that has stood the test of time and will only be replaced by the USB 3.0 version of the same product. And over a dozen SanDisk memory cards and thumb drives.

So when it came time to buy another adapter, I limited my search to SanDisk to save time. Ultimately bought this. Took a while to get around to opening it, but when I did, what a disappointing surprise. It does not work. At all.

Tests on Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs produce identical results: Inserting the adapter (with card loaded) causes the computer to beep in recognition of a new device. The adapter's green light shines. But no AutoPlay window appears. Windows Explorer displays a new drive letter, but there is no drive associated with it. And the adapter doesn't appear in the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" list from the System Tray.

No drive = a completely unusable piece of equipment.

While I still believe in SanDisk gear as a group, I suggest steering clear of this particular product and choosing some other adapter.

Perfectly Met My Needs... and more

I originally got this so I could access data from my cell phone's mini SD card on my computer, which at the time didn't have a card reader. However I have used this awesome little device in many other situations. It has been an invaluable addition to the junk I carry around with my laptop. One reviewer said that this will not work as a flash usb drive, and I disagree. I wouldn't recommend that application for everyday use, but if you need a usb flash drive and you don't have one you can usually find or find someone with a compatible memory card and voila you have a temporary usb flash drive. On more than one occasion I have been asked by someone at work if I could loan them a USB flash drive for a few minutes, and this little reader was the solution. Now most laptops and desktops come with these readers built in, but there are still plenty of other devices that have USB but not a card reader or not the kind of card reader you need. I can't attest to the devices relative speed or any other specs relative to any other device. These things were never important to me while I was using it. It's small enough to carry with me everywhere my laptop goes, and every time I needed it, it did what I needed it to.

Because some older laptops do not have the "slots" this reader is a great inexpensive option. It is a little more bulky than a jump drive which I would say it the unfortunate, but it is a cheap way to fit the need.

Revision:
At first, I thought this item was just quick fix, but after using this item for a long several years I have found this to be a excellent option for one who is on the go.

Pros:
It is compatible with any laptop that has a USB port which is useful when having multiple media items that use different types of drives(SD's Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card (SDSDB-4096, BULK, No Reader) , Mini SDs Transcend TS2GSDM 2GB Mini-Secure Digital Card , Transflash,...)
The light on the non-connecting end that turns on when being read is a useful bonus
Very light and easy to store.

Cons:
Like most jump drives, the lid that covers the connecting side of the jump drive is hard to not
lose because it isn't attached to the jump drive after taking the lid off.

Great product that has not given me any problems over years!

Works Well but Didn't Show on Desktop with Canon Card, Awful Tech Support

Overall, the device works well, but I had a problem when a Canon SD card didn't show up on my desktop (Mac). Called their tech "support" and dealt with someone who didn't know much and seemed to be reading responses from a computer screen, didn't know much about the product or how it interacts with Macs.

The device appears in the system profiler (devices) but not on the disk utility or desktop. The tech blamed it on the 16mb Canon disk that came with my camera. I got a SanDisk 1GB SD card and it shows up just fine. I don't know why the Canon disk wasn't recognized, perhaps a proprietary quirk on the part of Canon, SanDisk or both.

I've had good experiences with the SanDisk products, including a flash drive, but this first experience with their tech support left a bad aftertaste. It would be nice if their tech support was better trained.

UPDATE 2009: It doesn't work with SD Plus (new style) cards, so I had to buy another one. :(

This is an awesome card reader. I have a micro SD card that I use for my phone (LG VX8300), and I was trying to put mp3's and video files on it, and didn't have any luck with a previous card reader. My computer is also pretty old (Dell Dimension 4100), has Windows ME, plus it has USB 1.1. I thought these would all be a problem, but not at all. Just followed all the instructions carefully, and viola, it works! I've been able to put all my favorite mp3's, full length movies, and tv shows on my 1gb micro Sd card on my phone. I will say that although it said you don't need a driver for Windows ME, my PC prompted me to insert a disc for the driver, so I did (with the included CD), and it worked perfectly. Also, it says that USB 2.0 is required (but that it's backwards compatible with 1.1); but all I have is USB 1.1 and it works great. Love this card reader.

Good multi storage card solution but a bit bulky

I bought this because I have the standard somewhat problematic mixture of SD and Micro SD cards. My cell phone uses the micro, my camera uses the SD, and I travel a lot. Unfortunately microSD cards are a bit expensive per bit compared to SD cards and, for a camera, you want the speed of the SD card. Plus I'm basically cheap so I want the most memory for the buck for my camera and the SD card provides that. So, given the array of memory solutions, this was a good accessory to have. However it is a bit large (maybe can't be helped for the flexibility) and makes it difficult to use the other laptop USB port when this is plugged in. Never the less, good overall flexible solution that seems to run at USB2 speeds(though I haven't measured it of course but seems equivalent to any other USB2 memory card/thumd drive I have).
