Good Player, Replace Firmware With Rockbox For Most Use

I would have rated this nice little item with 5 stars if the firmware was better. As it is, installing Rockbox (my first time using something like this on a player) fixed everything I didn't like and made this the perfect MP3 player.

First of all, the design of the controls is easy to use without looking. At least, once you know what the different controls actually do... Easy ID by fingertip.

I gave up on the firmware installed by Sandisk (version 1 on my player) because it wasn't intuitive, was slow in response, took too long to load music and initialize, and seemed buggy if I tried to do too much in a short period of time. I would get skipping, pausing, and finally a white screen. This resulted in no music showing and the player seemingly unusable. Resetting was easy and fixed this quickly, however. Nonetheless, I changed the firmware to the appropriate Rockbox firmware and now love it.

Seems very sturdy, and has already survived minor drops (I'm a little ungraceful). Nice, tough case.

Good size for holding in your hand to use, and fits easily in a pocket.

Awesome that it not only plays FM radio, but allows me to record it! My local college station plays music just not findable and this has fixed my need to get my own copy.

Nice voice record feature, very good for taking personal notes or for recording anything, really.

Owner replaceable battery!!!

Takes a MicroSD card for more music listening pleasure, or for plain ol' data storage. Much more fun than a thumb drive.

As this player has been around a few years, I'd recommend buying an inexpensive replacement battery, USB data cord and whatever accessories you want right away as they might not be available too much longer.

A great, affordable first MP3 for the techno-impaired (and everybody else)

After some research, I chose this unit as my first MP3 - chiefly because the price was right, the consumer reviews were favorable, and because the size of the screen was the biggest I could find. This unit is very easy to operate and the sound quality and function are terrific. I intend to use it only for music, but it has video and recording capability as well. It also records sound files, but beware of this function - the "record" button is entirely too easy to turn on, so you may find yourself recording accidentally and then having to delete this useless file. I have a fairly big music collection and went for the 8GB memory rather than the 4GB, and I'm glad because I used 4GB of the space in no time. Be aware that the unit comes with some material already on it, which takes up some space - you can delete it. The e-series players also have a user-replaceable battery, which was another selling point for me.

My one gripe is that for those of us of the analog generation, there is no "stop" feature, which I'm told the iPod does have. I get it; there are no moving parts and therefore nothing to "stop", but when one has a playlist five albums long and you want to quit 1/3 of the way into it, it is frustrating to have to either zoom all the way to the end or select another album and then cancel out of that one. I contacted Sansa Tech Support and they confirmed that these are basically the only options, which is ridiculous. (Turning the unit off for a spell doesn't help either; the player simply starts up again where you left off, the next time you turn it on.)

I strongly recommend that you also order the Sansa e-Series AC Charger, so you can just charge your unit from a wall outlet rather than your PC. The postage will cost more than the charger but it is completely worth having for the convenience. I also have (and highly recommend) the Altec Lansing speaker/docking/charging unit that is compatible with the Sansa e-Series players, as I use the unit almost exclusively with speakers rather than with the ear buds.

A quick note for first-time and techno-impaired users: I will spare you the pile of research and feeling foolish that I went through, with some basic tips, as none of this is mentioned in the downloadable User's manual. This manual erroneously assumes that everyone already knows the basic theory behind how MP3 players work.
First, you MUST have Windows Media Player 11 on your PC, and not an earlier version. Countless forums online have mentioned this as the solution to problems of getting their players to interface with their PCs. I made sure I had MP11 up front and have not had any problems.
Second, the basic concept of using an MP3 is as follows. Your computer is going to serve as the master storage library for all of your MP3 music - your music will have to stay on there for as long as you want it on your MP3. You put your music cd into your cdr drive and bring up Windows Media Player; you must tell Media Player to "rip" the music to your library (which means it makes a sort of low-res version of the music file - it sounds fine, don't worry). You can opt to uncheck the one song that you don't like on a CD, and it will be left out. When you have done this to all of the cd's you want to add for the time being, you then plug your MP3 into the USB port of your PC (the Sansa MP3 player comes with a plug thingy for this) and you must tell Media Player to "Synch" (i.e. synchronize) the library's contents to your MP3 player. It will copy everything over as it is on the library. NOTE: If you remove something from the library, the next time you synch, it will be removed from your MP3 player as well. You can add to the library and re-synch over time. You should also map out in advance what, if any, Playlists you want to make up. These are very handy things - you can select and string albums or songs together in any order and give it a name, and the player will store and follow it; however, you have to create the playlist in Media Player before you Synch your MP3. It will synch over with the rest of the material.

I recommend downloading the full Users manual from the Sansa site. Their Tech Support folk are also very helpful. Enjoy your unit!

Very pleased for the price

I just received my MP3 player last week. Overall I am very happy with the player - especially for the price. Oh - and now it is even cheaper making it an even better bargain - (wish I would have waited - but oh well)

I really struggled with whether to get this model or go for the newer "View" model. After all it was only a few bucks more for the newer technology. I then started reading about all of the problems plaguing this new model with the first firmware releases - even though this is fairly typical for new technology. The E280, by comparison was in the later stages of firmware and most of the bugs have been worked out.

I didn't see much difference between the two players. The "View" had a larger screen for video - but was also larger and didn't have a replaceable battery. I think this was a big seller for the E280. I don't care how good lithium ion batteries are - I always find they die after a year or two. Being able to replace it is a big deal to me.

My first impression was - "Wow" I can't believe how small this thing is! I mean really - who is complaining about the size and weight of this thing? Compared to what? If it was any smaller or lighter - I would for sure lose it in a nanosecond. I really think the size is perfect and the weight makes it feel like a quality solid product.

The first thing I tried to do was update the firmware. I downloaded the latest firmware updater software from SanDisk's site - no problem here. I then plugged in the usb connector to the computer like they said.

This is where the problem started. My computer recognized the player but it was not obvious on what I was supposed to do next.

Yes - I did view the very nice video on how to upgrade the firmware on Sandisk's site - but nothing like that demo ever happened on my machine!

After messing with this for about 1/2 hour I finally got the firmware loaded. Don't ask me how - I'm not quite sure what I did to make this happen. At first the Sansa just started going into an endless loop of reading and writing. Once I disconnected it - it found the new firmware. Whoo - that's a relief. Anyway - I think Sandisk needs more work in this department. At first I thought this was just a glitch, but I also purchased a second unit for my wife and her firmware was even more troublesome to put on.

I like the fact that you can drag and drop files onto the memory or use Windows media player to synchroize the songs to the unit. I chose Microsoft's media player and once I figured out that you need to disable the auto synchronization feature, everything went fine. At first I was shocked to see I only had 4 gig left after only putting a few songs on. That's because Media Player dumped my whole library to the Sansa without me knowing it. The default is auto. If Media Player see's it has enough storage on your Sansa guess what it does?

I also purchased a 2GB Micro SD card - formatted it on the computer to FAT32 first, put it in the Sansa and it worked like a charm.

I think Sandisk has worked out most of the issues people have been complaining about with their latest firmware. There now is a option in the USB settings for auto sensing the two ways to put music on it. I had no problems with this at all. The background noise issue is not there, boot up time is vastly improved, you have your own equalizer settings, and it now plays audible files. (I don't think it has a bookmark feature for the audible books which would be nice. ) I have not experienced any lockups that earlier releases reported.

I really like the wheel approach and find the interface pretty easy to use. It would be nice to be able to get to certain functions quicker - like not having to click on a menu button and then have to scroll through several options to change the equalizer settings as an example - I also think certain functions should be nested right into the functions you are working with better - but for this incredibly low price - I can live with it. I'm sure I'm still in the learning curve.

The sound quality from this thing is really impressive. I was skeptical, but with 192kb mp3 files this thing sounds great! I'm using a cheap pair of Jbuds and it sounds better than I ever expected. With my Senheisser 595's it's a whole different world. It's really hard to believe that this kind of sound can come from this small of a unit. With good headphones you will forget you are listening to compressed audio files.

The FM radio worked much better than I anticipated. The sound was really good and getting it to synch to my local preset stations was a breeze. (Make sure you plug the headphones in first because the cord is the antenna!)

Battery life is excellent - but I would recommend getting the aftermarket plug in AC and cigarette adapter to make charging it easier. Shame on Sandisk for not including at least the AC adapter. I'm sure they were trying to keep the cost down to compete with the IPOD - but come on Sandisk! I don't like the fact that you can't listen to music while it is charging. But then again, it get's about 20 hours of play time so this isn't really a big deal.

The hardest thing about using this thing is spending all the time to rip your CD's. And believe me this thing will hold a lot of music! I have almost 1000 songs loaded on this with three audible books and still have 3GB's left. If I went with 128kb files I would get substantially more on it.

There are two different versions of this unit. (Basically the old and the new) The newer units, (Version 2) have the ability to read Micro SDHC memory. This means you can buy an 8GB external card today for about half the cost of the device and turn it into a 16gb player. There are plans to come out with even larger Micro SDHC cards in the future making this device future proof. This was a very smart move by Sandisk as you can't do this on an Ipod. Expect the memory prices to keep coming down.

In summary this is an unbeatable deal for an MP3 player. Great sound, easy to use, replaceable battery, lots of storage with the ability to expand, FM radio that works, voice recorder, very good build quality, and did I mention great sound?

I really like the Ipods. My daughter has one. I think their interface is better thought out and is easier to navigate. On the other hand, it is twice the price, has no expandability or replaceable battery, no FM tuner, and forces you to use a proprietary piece of software to download and rip music.

I took one star off because I think updating the firmware still has some quirks that need to be resolved. The menu items could be a little more intuitive, the audible book function needs some bookmarks. These are pretty minor complaints - especially for the price of this thing!

As you can tell, I highly recommend this unit. Hurry up and get one before they are all gone.

Must admit I was getting a bit concerned about the delivery. Amazon had not indicated it was coming from the US and originally quoted a delivery of 2 weeks, it arrived almost 2 weeks late. Amazon please review you delivery times and indicate initially and clearly, where it's coming from.

As to the product, feels good in my hand with a fair bit of weight due to the metal back...much better than some of the flimsy ones I've purchased in the past. No Instruction Manual in the package and none in the memory, but the operation is fairly foolproof. I was getting concerned about the initial charge up as it was getting pretty warm but it seems OK so far and the battery is lasting well on the initial charge.

As I only wanted it for Music it is performing well and I'm happy with the sound quality.

However, when loading on Music, some of my photos (jpeg) got onto the player, so I thought I'd take a look at them, oh no. Received the error message that I needed their software to convert my jpeg files before I could view them. Naughty Sana! I'm assuming I will have to be the same if I wanted to load and view a video.

Overall I'm happy with it for Music only as it does what it said on the box.
